To tell everyone to calm the fuck down?

This is all the snow where I live and everyone’s got their knickers in a twist! Talks of possible school closures and one of the departments in my husbands work have been told to take Friday off because of the “adverse weather” 😂😂😂

Well its been snowing all day. We are in the red alert area. It has not just been snowing but freezing with blizzards. The councils made the right move closing the schools. The difference is compared to other countries that have snow and get on with it is we rarely have it like this. I cannot remember the last time it snowed for so long.

RiojaHaze · 28/02/2018 22:03

I'm in Wiltshire too, no snow yet but DP just went to Tesco to get milk for breakfast and everywhere in town has sold out, including petrol stations!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 28/02/2018 22:04

I'm watching the news and it's awful in Scotland. That I understand, cancellations and everything.

But not in the Greater London area.

Hellsbellscockleshells · 28/02/2018 22:06

It’s pretty bad where we are. Snow fairly deep. It was blowing a blizzard this morning most of schools closed, several businesses closed and lots of crashes. DH took almost 4 hours to get to work (normally takes just over an hour) and has ended up staying over where he works tonight as weather/roads so bad. Most schools closed again tomorrow as more heavy snow forecast. Many of trains and buses off until at least lunch time tomorrow. I think it really depends where you live.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 28/02/2018 22:06

We have zero visibility outside - we are in RED weather alert for a reason!!!

These photos were taking a 2 hours ago... it’s snowed since then.... visibility outside is Zero!!!! And storm Emma still to hit us for another few hours.

OP your post is extraordinarily crass, show empathy for those of us really affected by this!

FairfaxAikman · 28/02/2018 22:06

I'm in the red zone. I was forced to go into work.
Now I can't get home, I can't get to my parents and my dad couldn't even get the 4x4 out to come and get me.
I'm stuck in a grotty hotel with the wind howling, so the room is freezing and the noise from the wind means I ain't getting any sleep tonight.
Just cos it isn't affecting you OP doesn't mean it's not a serious issue.

LineysShanks · 28/02/2018 22:12

I think the OP (a) is In the Amber warning zone for Thursday and Friday, and (b) titled her thread in a particular way so as to draw in people from all over.

You get what you get.

LineysShanks · 28/02/2018 22:13

Fairfax what a bummer.

speakout · 28/02/2018 22:13

Totally agree haudyer and fairfax.

I actually feel quite frightened now. My roof is creaking. 12 inches of snow and blizzard outside. Zero visibility.
Thank goodness we still have power.

MumboJumboo · 28/02/2018 22:17

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag I have complete and utter empathy for those who are being so badly affected by this, like my family up in Perth. It’s awful conditions. If you could see the reaction where I am to what, at this point in time, is no snow, you’d understand that the reason I think people here need to calm down is that we haven’t been affected by it yet and the likelihood is that we won’t be massively affected by it over the coming couple of days, whereas all my friends & loved ones up in Scotland are being hammered by this storm.

LineysShanks · 28/02/2018 22:18

Just done a round of the animals.

Oh and OP, there are farmers and smallholders in Wilts and Hants who are probably very worried about Thursday and Friday.

AlpacaLypse · 28/02/2018 22:18

@MumboJumboo I'm not far from you. Sorry haven't read the full thread. Being local I am related to rather a lot of the council and the council officers. Opinion of Head of Highways about the funding Wiltshire gets for maintenance etc is unprintable. As is that of at least two of the councillors. Opinion about the Chief Executive from all parties is even more unprintable. Tomorrow's forecast is horrible, and we just don't have the infrastructure here to deal with a big freeze, it doesn't happen often enough to justify the expenditure on the required equipment.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 28/02/2018 22:19

Yeah my DP works at a college and he got an email today to say the college is closed tomorrow. Crazy. And don’t get me started on those panic buying. I went to asda and must have been the only one not buying bread and milk. I don’t get why people can’t just eat the food they have, instead go on a crazy hunt for bread and milk. I’m sorry but when it’s cold I feel like something more than bread anyway.

LineysShanks · 28/02/2018 22:19

we haven’t been affected by it yet and the likelihood is that we won’t be massively affected by it over the coming couple of days

In the Amber Zone? Really? Got livestock, have you?

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 28/02/2018 22:20

*more substantial

MumboJumboo · 28/02/2018 22:20

Oh and OP, there are farmers and smallholders in Wilts and Hants who are probably very worried about Thursday and Friday.

And that is understandable. What is a bit excessive is the panic buying and hysteria from people who live a 5 minute walk from the supermarket/school.

OP posts:
LineysShanks · 28/02/2018 22:20

God it's not just about buying a fresh loaf of bread.

PortiaCastis · 28/02/2018 22:21

Transportation will be affected so if lorries can't get to shops with goods the shelves will stay empty and that will affect an awful lot of people

I think the concept of weather forecasting might have passed you by, OP.

I think you are correct.

It doesn't seem to have registered with the OP that a storm is due which is likely to bring very heavy snowfall and snow drifts.

Kissmycousinkate · 28/02/2018 22:22

I'm in the north of Scotland and hardly anything today and all the schools closed, second time this year too.

ItsNachoCheese · 28/02/2018 22:23

haudyerwheestbawbag your post is spot on! Its pretty scary being in the house listening to the wind roar. Cant imagine how the poor folk on the m80 atm are feeling :(

MumboJumboo · 28/02/2018 22:25

I think it’s blatantly obvious I’m not slating the people who have livestock and are fearful and I’m not slating people in areas that have been affected by this. People all week where I live have been in a frenzy about the snow and in my opinion, that’s a bit excessive given that we’ve had a 20 minute flurry. Anyway, I’m just going to leave this thread here because, quite frankly I can’t be bothered to explain it any more times than i already have Smile

Just got in after driving from Cumbria to Somerset. It was -8 and snowing quite heavily the far side of Birmingham, so you might wake up to more snow than you bargained for.
A few flakes at Bristol but nothing much.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 28/02/2018 22:26

No actually I don’t, I think they are taking very sensible precautions considering they are learning from those in the mid of now 1 but 2 storms, there has never been a red alert in all records and only a few ambers!!

Taking precautions means emergency services have less people to think about, they don’t have to get people from stranded buses, or take people to hospital as they far now at risk of hypothermia due to cancelled public serves and people gridlocked on motorways etc...

This is the reality here, people are at risk to life, it’s dire!!!

yolofish · 28/02/2018 22:27

I think if you live in a city centre and you are not in a red or amber zone it's easy to be complacent. We are coastal Kent, no snow since Tues - but what we do have on rural roads is frozen solid plus howling, really quite frightening winds and deep deep cold. DH took 4 hours to do a 20 min round trip on Tues and gave up on the job he was going to... couldnt get to work base today either. It's not that easy if you are in the least bit off the beaten track, and especially if you have outdoors animals too.
