to think there must be some kind of border in Ireland / Northern Ireland because of people

All the talk has been about goods and services.

But how will people travel between the UK and Ireland without a physical border? Passport checks, immigration status etc. There won't be a border between mainland UK and Northern Ireland so how will this work?

MadMags Who is going to put this hard border up? Not the EU the UK, the ROI or NI will. If no one is going to put one up then there cant be one.

MadMags Who is going to put this hard border up? Not the EU the UK, the ROI or NI will. If no one is going to put one up then there cant be one

So explain to us how they are going to control the border without having one?

Maryz · 27/02/2018 22:40

This is a right mess.

I gave up on a few Brexit threads because people were getting angry when anyone suggested that there has to be a border - either between Ireland and NI (fucking up the GFA) or between NI and the UK (the DUP will lose their shit).

Now it seems TM is selling the DUP up the river. Couldn't happen to nicer people [cynical]

MadMags · 27/02/2018 22:41

Are you being deliberately obtuse?? You do know that the über intelligent folk who voted this in were losing their shit about immigrants and foreigners, yes?

Julie8008 · 27/02/2018 22:42

So explain to us how they are going to control the border without having one? The same way it is now, at arms length.

LaurieMarlow · 27/02/2018 22:42

They could always give us back our counties

I'm not even a huge cheer leader for a united Ireland, but if the DUP voting for brexit helped push the country towards that, the irony would be delicious beyond words.

doesthislookoddtoyou · 27/02/2018 22:42

The same way it is now, at arms length

It only works the way it is now because both sides are in the EU. So again, how will it work when you are no longer in the EU?

doesthislookoddtoyou · 27/02/2018 22:43

They could always give us back our counties

We don't want them back though!

ChaChaChaCh4nges · 27/02/2018 22:43

Maryz - your analysis is entirely correct.

Julie8008 · 27/02/2018 22:44

Are you being deliberately obtuse? If its that obvious then spell it out, who are these people demanding a hard border, apart from remainers of course because I haven't seen a single group demanding that.

doesthislookoddtoyou · 27/02/2018 22:44

Julie, for fucks sake love, what are you wittering about? Have you not understood the question at all?

kalapattar · 27/02/2018 22:44

The same way it is now, at arms length

Do you think that post Brexit, when people who have been able to come to the UK as EU citizens suddenly find it much more difficult, that they might exploit an arms length border to get to the rest of the UK?

ChaChaChaCh4nges · 27/02/2018 22:44

As a matter of international law - there has to be a border. It’s illegal otherwise.

MadMags · 27/02/2018 22:45

You don’t want them back, does. Not everyone feels the same, I’m sure.

@Julie - your ignorance is genuinely astounding. I’m guessing you’re just on wind up.

doesthislookoddtoyou · 27/02/2018 22:46

You don’t want them back, does. Not everyone feels the same, I’m sure.

No, not me, the country. We couldn't afford it and there is no political will for it.

LaurieMarlow · 27/02/2018 22:47

Ignore Julie, she always spouts a load of crap on these threads.

I mean, if she's happy with the kind of brexit that involves wide open borders Confused who are we to argue?

ChaChaChaCh4nges · 27/02/2018 22:47

This is my fucking job, day in day out - unstinting, endless mental effort to find a non-existent solution - imagine how depressing it is to be me.

Maryz · 27/02/2018 22:49

Fucking hell, just realised Julie is on this thread.

Any chance of a reasonable discussion is out the window so Hmm

MadMags · 27/02/2018 22:50

does someone has to take the poor fuckers! Grin

Joking aside though, I think sentimentality could cloud people’s judgement, I really do. IF it was put to a vote I mean.

Julie8008 · 27/02/2018 22:51

As a matter of international law - there has to be a border. It’s illegal otherwise So the international community will impose a hard border on Northern Ireland? I dont think so.

LaurieMarlow are you demanding a hard border?

MadMags · 27/02/2018 22:52

Julie, I declare this a United thread. United because I’m quite sure we’re all on the side of you being an utter gobshite.

Julie8008 · 27/02/2018 22:53

OK if you just want a one sided echo chamber then I will leave. Not here to hassle anyone. Hope you enjoy your demands for a hard border.

Nite Smile

FlaviaAlbia · 27/02/2018 22:53

MadMags Grin

Maryz · 27/02/2018 22:53

Sorry everyone, I hadn't read the full thread.

Julie is either a troll or a bot, there is no sense to "her" posts, if everyone completely ignored "her" the thread would be more productive [sigh]

I'm really sorry ChaChaCha, a while ago we all were discussing this and knew there was no solution.

The UK needs a border (because of all those immigrants, obviously). They can't have one at NI/I because of GFA (legal implications of breaking that). They can't have one at NI/GB (Unionists are propping up TM). So where? Who knows? TM certainly doesn't because she is a bit thick

PhelanThePain · 27/02/2018 22:54
