Both high end and small/ local and Why?

I'll start- number one at the Balmoral in Edinburgh. Treated ourselves due to celebrating new house and job and it was simply amazing. We did the taster menu and it was beautiful from start to finish, tried loads of food I wouldn't normally try and the service was top notch (was expensive!). Small and local to me, Bistro Franc in Liverpool, does a Sunday wine and dine offer and every time we've been is spot on in terms of the food and really good value. Me and DP are big foodies and usually have a good read of TripAdvisor before we go.

Cosmic - what sort of food do you like, and I'll put some links up!

Best is hard. The Delauney is good; fifteen in Cornwall is good (for the view rather than the food which is nice but I've had better); the brunch at Darwin (top of sky garden) is excellent (unlimited bloody Mary's!); wood in Manchester is lovely.

AveAtqueVale · 28/02/2018 20:55

I liked Midsummer house a lot.

Also a fan of a small place in York called Melton’s, and a restaurant called Bluebells just outside Sunningdale. I think it’s less good than it used to be, but still lovely. We had our wedding reception there and I still occasionally dream of that meal!

SmokedPaprika · 28/02/2018 21:01

If anyone finds themselves in south Kent -

Rocksalt at Folkestone
the Wife of Bath at Wye

Both Mark Sargent restaurants, food is divine.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 28/02/2018 21:08

Cosmic, if you are midlands/Warwickshire based please try Salt in Stratford upon Avon.
I had the tasting menu just before Christmas and it was incredibly hard to fault!

BetterEatCheese · 28/02/2018 21:08

Momo in London - beautiful Moroccan food in a wonderful atmosphere. I love it

CosmicSpider · 28/02/2018 21:27

@Niceandwarmandhot we like most food. Its a treat for my DH, he loves mexican.

@Brioche thanks for the tip. We are close to their.

CosmicSpider · 28/02/2018 21:28

*there!

JonSnowsCloak · 28/02/2018 21:39

Brioche- love that you were a manager there, I just think it's a fab place, was one of our first dates there when DP didnt have much money and I realised he had borrowed his mum's debit card to take me out when the bill came 😂 felt awful and I paid the next time! I'm obsessed with the dauphinoise and veg platters that come with the mains, need to go back asap. Yes to Babychams recommendation for Smugglers cove. Sunday Roast - i could also do with recommendations as ive not found a really good one for a while, the Carriers Inn is lovely though near to Delamere forest for a roast or just the food in general. The Baltic Market does amazing food and hot gin- you need to try the Halloumi fries at one of the stalls there! Lenclume sounds like it's a shout, just need to book a little trip to the lakes, not been for a long time 😁

Niceandwarm did you go for the tasting menu at Wood? Another on my long list (need more excuses to go for extravagant meals!!)

Pipe and Glass near Beverley is lovely, as is the Star Inn at Harome. Skosh in York city centre is very good. But L'enclume defo the best we've been to!

CadyHeron · 28/02/2018 21:49

Magpie Cafe in Whitby always has amazing food. From fish and chips, salmon, scampi, even have a vegan main and dessert on the menu both are which amazing.
Never had a bad meal there yet and been there lots!

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 28/02/2018 22:01

Adores the these threads..

I m astounded that so many people have Been to enclume never heard of it be for today do people live near it ie traveled for it?

Waterside and Ledbury always get mentioned.. Considering water side been going for years...

pimlicolife · 28/02/2018 22:04

Another vote for Rules. I love the service there too.

orangesticker · 28/02/2018 22:10

I found theLedbury to be more relaxed, more fun - waiters were more human. At La Gavroche, the service was too much, too formal...it felt like eating in a straight jacket.
A few years ago, on holiday, we had lunch in a 2 star restaurant - the service was so stuffy we felt like we were making the place look untidy. Later on that day we went to a really well reviewed American burger bar that insisted on eating with your fingers, it was so busy we had to eat at the bar, the difference couldn't have been more pronounced - the burger bar won and made us realise that formal dining doesn't suit us. We like the food but the service is too wooden.

Niceandwarmandhot · 28/02/2018 22:14

Try cantina Laredo - it's a short walk and superb!

Justwanttosayplease · 28/02/2018 22:21

A small family run Thai, in an old pub alongside the Grand Union canal at Watford Gap in Northamptonshire. Hidden gem. Sadly now gone. The best kept secret.

Also, Le Manoir, Fawsley, The Ivy.

Niceandwarmandhot · 28/02/2018 22:23

There's also la bodega negra.

For truly quirky Mexican, if a bit of a walk from Leicester Square, there's a polish/Mexican fusion restaurant (more the menu than the actual dishes!!) in Mayfair

Munrow · 28/02/2018 22:24

The Grill at Cameron House, Loch Lomond is by far the best steak I've had with the whole shebang! Oh If only my tummy was big enough to finish the meal!

I'm a sucker for Nobu. The shrimp popcorn and sushi there is amazing.

The magpie at Whitby bay! If you ever go, eat there! It's not posh, it doesn't look inviting but god the fish just melts in your mouth. Best fish and chips I have ever ever ever eaten. You must go! I always leave there feeling absolutely fish fucked.

But my mums cooking is the best and I really miss it. She was the best cook I ever knew!

zenasfuck · 28/02/2018 22:25

We recently stayed in Chester and were recommended to try la fattoria, a family run Italian.

We were made so very welcome and the food was absolutely gorgeous. So good in fact that we visited twice in two days.

Lol at the shoutout for harvester in Dudley, it’s about 5 minutes from my house and we actively avoid going there due to a couple of terrible experiences

Piffpaffpoff · 28/02/2018 22:27

@bagelbaby I was disappointed in Anderson’s sadly, had been trying to go for years but whenever we were in BoG and had a babysitter it was either their closed day or was fully booked. It was perfectly fine and among the best I’ve had in the area but just not the amazing experience the reviews and social media had led me to expect.

Someone else down the thread suggested Letterbox in Newtonmore. Passed it so many times and am definitely going to give it a go next time we are up.

Bubba1234 · 28/02/2018 22:31

The blue elephant in cheslsea

bagelbaby · 28/02/2018 22:40

@Piffpaffpoff sorry to hear that. But thanks for the mention of that place in Newtonmore - one for the list when we're next up there

mymatemax · 28/02/2018 22:40

Local, The Lighthouse in Aldeburgh, just keep going back great food lovely welcome and relaxed service and good value.

Love the Savoy, can't beat old fashioned service and style.

Niceandwarmandhot · 28/02/2018 22:50

The Waldorf was nice - went with my parents a few years ago. But although nobody ever believes me, I swear to any god you like that this happened - dad said the Waldorf salad was not on the menu and could he have one anyway.

And the waiter had never heard of it.

And no, he wasn't basil fawlty!

Dad said, just ask your chef, and sure enough a lovely Waldorf salad was produced. But seriously, the waiter had no idea what he was talking about Grin

CadyHeron · 28/02/2018 23:02

How can you not know what a Waldorf salad is in the Waldorf?! Grin
I'd have been tempted to shout "celery, apple, walnut,GRAPES!" lol
