Both high end and small/ local and Why?

I'll start- number one at the Balmoral in Edinburgh. Treated ourselves due to celebrating new house and job and it was simply amazing. We did the taster menu and it was beautiful from start to finish, tried loads of food I wouldn't normally try and the service was top notch (was expensive!). Small and local to me, Bistro Franc in Liverpool, does a Sunday wine and dine offer and every time we've been is spot on in terms of the food and really good value. Me and DP are big foodies and usually have a good read of TripAdvisor before we go.

Chez Bruce here too

Curlyshabtree · 28/02/2018 17:22

Terre à Terre in Brighton

bagelbaby · 28/02/2018 17:29

Anderson's in Boat Of Garten up in the Scottish Highlands.
Always amazing

AllertonRoad · 28/02/2018 17:31

If you’re in Liverpool OP have you tried Spire? It’s fabulous. They do a brilliant lunch deal too.

Ffsnothingworks · 28/02/2018 17:34

Taken by family in Suffolk to Maison Bleu in Bury St Edmunds, and The Great House in Lavenham. Both offering French food and amazing service, but not pretentious at all. They do set lunch menus two courses for £19.00, 3 for £25.00, gets more expensive if you go a la Carter or add wine!

Ffsnothingworks · 28/02/2018 17:34

Carte

TheInimitableMrsFanshawe · 28/02/2018 17:47

Rally pleased to see Castle Terrace getting a couple of mentions. We had a fantastic lunch with matched wines. It was £30 more than the delicious meal but with farcical service at The Honours the next night. Castle Terrace felt like a bargain; The Honours felt like a swizz.

Our local favourite is a secret because I want to continue to be able to get a table Grin

PollyMycroft · 28/02/2018 17:50

Aumbry in Manchester for higher end type-sadly no longer there.
My best cheap meal was in the cafe at Healey's Cider Farm in Cornwall-gorgeous pasty and a pint of cider on a sunny day...what's not to love Grin

Wingbing · 28/02/2018 17:55

Fine dining is mine & DH'a thing.

DH proposed at Nathan Outlaw's, an incredible evening.

But the best was The Waterside. We are booked to stay at L'Enclume for our wedding anniversary in June, glad a few posters have mentioned there.

I'd also like to try Sat Bains too.

DioxideBlonde · 28/02/2018 17:57

L' Enclume in The Lakes. Amazing. We're going again this weekend, assuming we can battle 120 miles through the snow Hmm

The Black Horse in Helmsley is superb for gastro pub food.

The Drunken Duck near Ambleside does the very, very best cheese board. Ever.

Davros · 28/02/2018 18:18

I'm dying to go to The Man Behind The Curtain, has anyone here been?
Recently discovered The Woodspeen near Newbury Berkshire. It's great
Other favourites:
Oxo Tower
Roast, Borough Market
Roux at the Landau
Iberica Marylebone
Relais de Venise - various branches, good value, consistent, fun.
For cheap eats our local Oliver's Village Cafe, best chips in NW3 and cheap!

CreamCol0uredP0nies · 28/02/2018 18:24

Op have you tried The Chefs Table in Chester ? Def worth a visit.
All time fave is Andrew Fairlie, Gleneagles.
Also Nopi in London.

Whitney168 · 28/02/2018 18:27

Love the Woodspeen, Davros.

L'Enclume is definitely on my to do list.

I didn't love the Waterside though - good food, but found it a bit dark and stuffy and tables rather crowded in.

MatildaTheCat · 28/02/2018 18:43

Pollen StreetSocial,
Little Social,
Pollen ( in Singapore) All Jason Atherton. All stand out.
French Table
Martin Wishart at Cameron House Hotel
Chez Bruce ( long ago, this reminds me to go back)
Zedel for price, buzz and location
The Wolseley for simplicity, buzz and celeb spotting.
Gravetye Manor, tasting menu and overnight. Amazing breakfast and most produce from their stunning gardens or very local. Really special.

Worst.

Guess what, Jamie’s.

blue25 · 28/02/2018 18:45

The Sportsman in Seasalter, Kent. Amazing food & beautiful setting
Hakkasan in London for great Chinese food

coastalchick · 28/02/2018 18:47

Paul Ainsworth at Number 6. And agree Chez Bruce is fab (though it’s been around 15 years since I last ate there)

Corneliasedet · 28/02/2018 18:49

Agree with PP Terre a Terre in Brighton, best meal I’ve ever had bar none

GreatWesternValkyrie · 28/02/2018 19:08

Quilon, not far from Buckingham Palace, absolutely fantastic southern Indian/Goan menu. Set lunch is really superb value for money and It’s such a relaxing venue - cant recommend it highly enough!

Langhams for afternoon tea is a wonderful but expensive treat.

Agree with others, Midsummer House in Cambridge is a fantastic experience. .

Most disappointing recently was Sindhu in Marlow, it’s one of Atul Kocchar’s restaurants, it was nice but I was expecting a bit more of a taste wow.

Locally, Prime Steak & Grill in Chandlers Cross - outstanding steaks and sauces.

Lastly, a shout out for The Carrington Arms in Moulsoe near MK, awesome for country pub breakfasts.

I’m hungry...

LockedOutOfMN · 28/02/2018 19:10

The Bleeding Heart - the underground restaurant (they've changed the names around). Ate there many times in the 2000s and it was always divine.

L'Escalier restaurant in Guernsey (now closed) was also amazing.

MatildaTheCat · 28/02/2018 19:15

Prettiest restaurant:

Spring at Somerset House. Chef is Skye Gyngell of Petersham Nursery fame. Beautiful restaurant and lunchtime menu is great value ( as most of the top London restaurants)

DevaDiva · 28/02/2018 19:19

We live in Chester and have several fab, independents to choose from; Upstairs at the Grill, Chester is our favourite - book well in advance, it's a small restaurant and almost always full. Porta, Chester (same owners as the excellent Joseph Benjamin) does great tapas; again it's small, you can't book but it's worth the wait.

La Fattoria, Chester is a firm family favourite; authentic Italian cooking with pizzas and pasta to die for.

Caveat - don't go near any of them on race days Wink

Another favourite is The Red Lion, Litton in the Peak District brilliant, home cooked pub food - book as it's very popular with locals and walkers.

luanmapo · 28/02/2018 19:22

Yes yes yes to Maison Bleu in Bury st Edmunds. It's run by a French family and you can tell as is so smoothly run with such passion. The food never fails to impress. We try and go for any special occasion we have.

Another favourite of mine is Matt Warswick @ The Latymer at Pennyhill Park & Spa, Surrey. Went just before Christmas and had thebtasting menu and wine pairing, a really special evening with amazing food, wine and service.

SallyOMalley · 28/02/2018 19:24

Cochon Aveugle in York. Fabulous.

kevinkeeganlovesme · 28/02/2018 19:25

Club Gascon or Pearl when Jun Tanaka was there.

PoppyFleur · 28/02/2018 19:28

Corrigans in Mayfair - fantastic food, fantastic service and enjoyed with our closest friends.

Hand & Flowers in Marlow - delicious food, cooked with passion.

Fifteen in Cornwall - really enjoyed it the first time we went about a year after it opened (9 years ago I think?), visited 3 years ago and it wasn't as good but still enjoyable.

Local place is a vegan cafe that does really original flavour combinations that could convert any meat eater. Fab lunch for under a tenner.
