To think that posters who do this are creepy?

Those who research your previous threads on mumsnet so that they can have ammunition to slag you off? Weird and stalkerish.

OP posts:
Thistlebelle · 26/02/2018 20:26

MN isn’t a private club, it’s publicly accessible, published material.

Other than a few select boards any posts become part of an ongoing, publicly available archive.

If you post prolifically or with distinctive style then people may start to remember your name, your views or particular posts.

All of this is within your control.

You are an adult and responsible for your own actions.

I find it quite baffling that people become outraged that someone else remembers/finds something they’ve written.

Isn’t that the point?

C0untDucku1a · 26/02/2018 20:27

Situations dont arise randomly and out of any context. Often an advanced search shows bigger issues. if they were saying the dp had done something and are they bu to think it is not right you kight think anoying but not ltb territory. Then you might do an advanced search and realise this was part of a catalogue of abusive behaviours.

How often do you have a conversation with someone and not ask a background question?

It’s a bit weird, even weirder when people say ‘I’ve advanced searched you’ like it’s totally normal. I’ve never felt the need to do it, if someone’s lying I think oh.. how odd then move on.

I also remember reading a thread on here about what a stalker someone was to search someone on FB who they’ve never met Confused.

frasier · 26/02/2018 20:37

Thistlebelle Exactly. Not only is it the point but it is also what happens in real life - people remember (interacting with a smaller group pf people of course) - although it can't be proved as easily without an RL AS!

I want an AS for real life!

frasier · 26/02/2018 20:42

harlaandgoddard This is a messageboard with a search function. It is normal.

Who started this "It's creepy, sick, weird" stuff?! Someone who doesn't know how the internet works? Someone with a lot to hide?

It is creepier, sicker and weirder to get outraged about people looking at your previous posts because you are a liar.

Trills · 26/02/2018 20:46

(Nearly) all of MN is indexed by Google anyway you know.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 26/02/2018 20:47

I think have you not got anything better to do ? It’s mean and overinvested and normally spiteful

nakedscientist · 26/02/2018 20:47

I've done it once. On a thread where the op was moaning about not owning a house and the older generation didn't admit how hard things were and on another thread they'd said they owned a house.......

others had ,mentioned it and I checked it out.

I gave up on the thread then and don't feel bad or creepy.

AuntFidgetWonkhamStrongNajork · 26/02/2018 20:47

There are a couple of posters who I recognise as being people that constantly start new threads about the same situation - using the same user name. And if they just updated the same "is my OH a loser?" thread rather than start 10 threads giving examples of how much a loser their OH is, it would make the advice given by other posters much more relevant. So I'm not AS'ing them, I just remember and thank the stars there are only two of them with the same OH

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 26/02/2018 20:47

And OP —- give your poor SIL a break Grin

fullofhope04 · 26/02/2018 20:50

I'm the same lilmisskittykat - I would never be arsed to look up a posters previous threads Smile

RoseWhiteTips · 26/02/2018 20:50

I think some people use it to do something Mumsnet disapproves of, namely troll hunting.
It is a sign that you are too invested in this place and you should step away asap from your keyboard.

RoseWhiteTips · 26/02/2018 20:51

Bet it’s the same people who indulge in it, too.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 26/02/2018 20:53

People moaning about this clearly don't know how the internet works and should step away-Pronto.

MrsMaxwell · 26/02/2018 20:58

And yeah - it is normally spiteful I agree.

I thought there was something in talk guidelines about bringing up previous threads?

KateAdiesEarrings · 26/02/2018 21:00

If I can be bothered, I'll use AS to troll hunt but not so I can post on the thread, it's so I can report to MN and say 'I think this is a troll'.
I don't think AS is creepy. I also don't think troll hunting is bad.

Thistlebelle · 26/02/2018 21:01

Frasier makes an excellent point, our conversations in real life don’t stand in isolation.

IRL people judge you by past statements, past behaviour, past decisions.

You won’t always even know that that’s how they formed their judgements.

You won’t know that a friend of a friend saw your drunken argument in the pub and told everyone or that your colleague happens to be friends with a mate someone’s SIL/MIL/NDN etc

Your friends might not call you on all your bad behaviour or small hypocrisies but they damn sure remember them.

It’s not that different here.

PeppermintPasty · 26/02/2018 21:03

God, any AS on me would be dullsville...perhaps we should have a thread on what an AS would show about all of us...

OutsideContextProblem · 26/02/2018 21:04

MNHQ doesn’t disapprove of troll hunting at all. If you work out that someone is telling big fat porkies for nefarious purposes (or is a pervert) and report it quietly to MNHQ then they are extremely grateful and will act accordingly. What they do disapprove of is troll hunting publically on the thread.

RoseWhiteTips · 26/02/2018 21:10

Yes. That is what I was actually referring to. 🙄

RoseWhiteTips · 26/02/2018 21:11

But anyhow, searching for trolls and running to Miss is pretty laughable.

RoseWhiteTips · 26/02/2018 21:13

You must have too much time on your hands if you are able to run around in the background looking for alleged “trolls”.
