To think Cornwall is much nicer than Devon?

Can anyone convince me otherwise?

I go to Cornwall every year and I love it.

Someone I know keeps telling me that Devon is nicer, so what am I missing?

Jam on top, how could you not! Exmoor is the place for me.

FreeButtonBee · 27/02/2018 14:33

I love love love the south hams. It's the only place in the UK I would consider a holiday house. Thurlestone is my happy place. Or south pool. Or bibgury with the sea tractor.

I had a very nice trip to St Ives in April one year and a weekend in Padstow in November another. So am not a Cornwall hater by any stretch. The weather was gorgeous both time and it was lovely. But even then totally in the off season it was way too busy for me. I can't imagine what's it's like in peak season (and having kids in Reception, realistically I am stuck with peak season for a looooooooooong time).

But Devon, even on a bank holiday weekend is still great. Back again for a week at May half term and I am so excited already.

I vote for Dorset too...best beaches in the UK resides there ...

but I'd pick Cornwall over Devon

FuzzyCustard · 27/02/2018 16:18

Usually they're too engrossed in throwing stones at the moon shouting "bugger off ye bastard

That's just plain nasty.

lilabet2 · 27/02/2018 16:23

I prefer Cornwall but may be biased as I spent all my childhood holidays there near to Padstow (North Cornwall).

I think Cornwall has more rugged coastline whereas Devon is more gentle with rolling hills.

Justwanttosayplease · 27/02/2018 16:36

All of those counties are beautiful. Cornwall has more coastline and more solitude so will appeal to many. Dorset has greener, leafier countryside. All are different.

As to the poster who said there was poverty in some of those places, they are absolutely right. Away from the coasts, in some of the central towns and villages poverty is very apparent. It is a big problem to which there is no solution, tourism requires specific skills and there is little else with traditional agricultural skills becoming more mechanised.

IveGotStupidHair · 27/02/2018 16:41

There is definitely huge poverty in both Devon and Cornwall. Not just in the touristy places - particularly Torquay and Newquay, but in the central towns and villages too.

Yerroblemom1923 · 27/02/2018 16:51

I'm from Cornwall so a bit biased, but there are equally lovely places in Devon and Dorset. It is, of course, jam first then cream. And the A30 isn't so bad....unless you get stuck behind an emmetWink

pinkpanther84 · 27/02/2018 17:06

I'm from Devon and put jam then cream, seems so much more logical! Definitely prefer Devon to Cornwall, although of course I'm biased. Cornwall does have some great beaches but I think Devon has more to do and is friendlier

IveGotStupidHair · 27/02/2018 17:26

pinkpanther pack your bags and scones and get yourself over the border right now. You’re doing it wrong!

pinkpanther84 · 27/02/2018 19:45

IveGotStupidHair I know I'm letting the side down! To me it makes sense as I spread the jam and then dollop the cream on top. Doing it the other way just wouldn't work!

Oooeeeerrrrrindeed · 27/02/2018 19:50

They're both bloody awful!
Well. They'd be better without the bitter miserable and rude tourists and the locals who are clearly sick of being constantly inundated with these grumpy excuses for humanity.

WindyWednesday · 27/02/2018 19:57

I went to school in Devon. But I’m not from Devon. DH is cornish. I love both. North Cornwall is very different from the likes of st lves etc. Rugged and peaceful.

The coast in Somerset is rather fabulous imo.

Grilledaubergines · 27/02/2018 20:08

Love both Cornwall and Devon. Both beautiful and the weather is lovely during the summer.

I absolutely love my home town (London) but Cornwall and Devon are two of the most beautiful places in the UK for me.

mermaidsandunicorns · 27/02/2018 20:51

I live in Cornwall I love it here but summer is a nightmare - I go on holiday to South Wales which is a lot like Cornwall but welsh!
