To think Cornwall is much nicer than Devon?

Can anyone convince me otherwise?

I go to Cornwall every year and I love it.

Someone I know keeps telling me that Devon is nicer, so what am I missing?

YANBU, I have always thought this, been to both lots of times.
I mostly go where Fuzzy is I think. It's easy to find an empty beach even in the summer holidays.

TheMadGardener · 26/02/2018 18:03

I was born and grew up in Cornwall but now live in West Devon just on the edge of Dartmoor. I love Cornwall but it does get chocka with tourists in the summer. Devon is gorgeous and very varied as it's so large. Dartmoor is amazingly beautiful and the Tamar Valley is lovely. Some people think Devon is only Torbay and the "English Riviera", but there are so many different areas.

(But even though I now live on the other side of the border I still put my jam first, cream second on the second as I'm still Cornish...)

TeenagersandFurbabies · 26/02/2018 18:14

I live in North Devon so obviously Devon is better than Cornwall, but I guess it depends how many hours you want to spend in holiday traffic. Every where gets really busy & crowded during holiday season. Personally I think you can't beat a walk along the beach in the middle of winter.

Lordofmyflies · 26/02/2018 18:43

I live in Cornwall, so biased but I do love the rugged, untamed landscape that is unique to Cornwall. Life is slower and where we are, tourists tend to pass through on the way to popular, trendy Padstow and St. Ives so the summer heave isn't too bad. Devon always seems more manicured and organised!

GnotherGnu · 26/02/2018 18:46

I've had holidays in both and generally prefer Cornwall. There is little to beat the first sight of the sea as you approach St Ives.

LikeARedBalloon · 26/02/2018 18:51

I love North Devon...I'm another one who got engaged on Croyde and honeymooned in North Devon. Would never go to Cornwall for a holiday again. The last couple of times were full of stag parties and vomiting teenagers ☹ They ruined it for me!

TonTonMacoute · 26/02/2018 18:54

I live in the Tamar Valley, so slap bang on the border, and I love both of them.

I certainly wouldn’t say Devon was nicer, they are quite different, it if you love your Cornish holidays, why change? We’ve been going on holiday to the same place in Brittany for 12 years!

FuzzyCustard · 26/02/2018 18:54

I'm in the north of Cornwall...and by that I mean proper north, not Newquay or Padstow! It's the bit most people miss.

snozzlemaid · 26/02/2018 18:55

Newquay is not a good representation of Cornwall. Other areas don't have the stag parties in such volume.
Please don't judge us on Newquay.

BarbarianMum · 26/02/2018 18:55

Devon (almost) every time. Why drive further for more of the same plus hours of tailbacks?

Crabbo · 26/02/2018 18:56

You don't have to have a favourite, you can just like both. Although Devon is better Wink Disclaimer - am from Devon. Where have you been in both and what kind of places do you like?

VetOnCall · 26/02/2018 18:58

I live in Devon and I absolutely adore it. For me Devon is better to live in - more going on, more job prospects and not as remote plus Dartmoor is one of my favourite places in the world - but I love to visit Cornwall for the beaches and to wander around Padstow, St Ives, Mevagissey etc. Devon has some lovely beaches but not nearly as many wild, dramatic stunners as Cornwall.

Toomanytealights · 26/02/2018 18:58

Live in Devon but have lived in Cornwall too.

There are crap places in both. There are gorgeous places in both. I think the non nice places in Cornwall can be grimmer than in Devon. I also think Cornwall can be a challenge in winter and is so far away from everything.

I love both and Dorset and Brittany which reminds me of Cornwall in places. Not so keen on Somerset.

mummyretired · 26/02/2018 18:58

Grew up in Cornwall, live in Devon, holidayed in both but Croyde is my favourite too. Although if I could afford the Saunton Sands Hotel I'd be very tempted.
Both Cornwall and Devon have a huge variety of landscapes and beaches, so if you're not local enough to do daytrips I'd try different places so as not to miss out.

Whohasnickedmyvodka · 26/02/2018 19:00

I live in mid Cornwall so i am biased but when i have been on holiday i have been to devon but our cream teas are the right way 😀😀😀

Heartofglass12345 · 26/02/2018 19:03

I think they are both beautiful but my son was born whilst i was on holiday in cornwall so it will always be a bit more special to me Grin

Lovemusic33 · 26/02/2018 19:05

I know both quite well and prefer Cornwall.

NataliaOsipova · 26/02/2018 19:05

Dorset. Every time. A lot nicer....and a lot nearer (to anywhere!)

Stickerrocks · 26/02/2018 19:07

Cornish born & bred. Always had to drive to Plymouth twice a year for a refurb and invariably got car sick. My views on Devon have been 5ainted ever since.

Stickerrocks · 26/02/2018 19:08

Tainted.

Shaddyuppayaface · 26/02/2018 19:08

Been to both loads & love both. However, for somewhere at least as lovely without the crowds I would go to Northumberland Smile

Onceuponatime21 · 26/02/2018 19:11

I assume all the Cornish and devonians on here have seen this, but I just love it...

www.thepoke.co.uk/2017/02/06/cornish-donald-trump-wants-build-wall-devon/

(Blow in, living in Devon, love both. But Devon best of all)

storynanny · 26/02/2018 19:16

I like visiting both but, Croyde wins it for me. So Devon. Visited as a child from 1966 to 1978 and then again in the 90’s with my own children. Sometimes I go just for the day to be nostalgic.
I know there is not much there apart from the glorious beach, but I love it.
It brings back such clear images and memories of being young more than any other place in the UK and I obviously have been on holiday elsewhere.

stinksworth · 26/02/2018 19:18

I live in Cornwall, and love it. So many beautiful parts. In summer there are plenty of 'secret' beaches away from the crowds, usually if you're prepared for a bit of a walk. That being said we've had some gorgeous holidays in Devon, and agree with PP about the beauty of Scotland's west coast. Britain has so much beautiful scenery to offer.

stinksworth · 26/02/2018 19:20

Also, the main road A30 is now dual carriageway at a previous bottleneck so fingers crossed for quicker journeys this year!
