To think Cornwall is much nicer than Devon?

Mrswoollyfromwoollylane · 26/02/2018 16:34

Can anyone convince me otherwise?

I go to Cornwall every year and I love it.

Someone I know keeps telling me that Devon is nicer, so what am I missing?

North Devon is lovely especially exmoor and the coast on the Devon Somerset border.

Dipitydoda · 26/02/2018 20:02

Love them both, love the dramatic scenery of Cornwall, hate the a30 and the extra 2 hours in the car. Loads more to do in Devon I find. Find the devonians friendlier. Last time I tried a cream tea the Devon wAy. After years of pooh Poohin it, I’m now a convert. For that reason alone Devon wins

FuzzyCustard · 26/02/2018 20:30

The cream goes on top. There is no other way.

The cream goes on the bottom and you swirl the jam through it. You cant swirl cream through jam thats just ridiculous Confused

catfishsally · 26/02/2018 23:48

agree

Willowfrost · 26/02/2018 23:58

No swirling needed, just dollop the cream on Grin

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 27/02/2018 00:01

I think Dorset, Devon and Cornwall are blooming lovely and who ever lived there is blooming lucky

Writersblock2 · 27/02/2018 00:05

Live in Cornwall so I’m biased but it’s just beautiful. I adore St Ives but avoid it in the summer - yuck! Cornwall is best all wild and wonderful.

scaryteacher · 27/02/2018 00:46

Reinette You don't swirl anything, the whole point is the separate textures and tastes in one bite. The cream has to be on top so it hits the top of your mouth and you get that cool unctuousness.

My house is in the Tamar Valley, and I cannot wait to move back from abroad, so I can have clotted cream on tap, and buy wonderful things from the Tamar Valley Food Hub again.

They're both great. Devon for living is easier. More developed. Better roads. Jobs. Better schools etc.

Devon has Dartmoor and a third of Exmoor but Cornwall has Bodmin.

Cornwall is a bit wilder, better beaches for surfing, kiting.

I love all of the SW. I live in a village near Exeter but have a holiday place in Rock, Cornwall.

It's about to get so much more fun in the summer holidays given that the council have decided to start roadworks in several places between Devon and Cornwall until late this year, 30mph speed limit for miles anyone?! Grin

You can't pollute the wonder that is clotted cream by swirling jam through it, that's sacrilege! The cream has to go on top, no question.

swampytiggaa · 27/02/2018 08:19

We moved to the south west 8 years ago. Cornwall is lovely but Devon is where we live as the job prospects were slightly better.

I am in north Devon- walking distance to Westward Ho! which is lovely 🙂

1ndig0 · 27/02/2018 08:20

The beaches in Cornwall are stunning and more wild, but then the Jurassic Coast is beautiful too.

The only thing I don't like about Cornwall is that so many of the houses are built of that grey stone and it can look quite grim. Devon and Dorset have more far more beautiful villages, I think? Also Cornwall is very windswept and less trees, so it can seem a bit bleak in bad weather.

ShatnersWig · 27/02/2018 08:29

I've been to Cornwall four times over the last 25 years. Every time I'm a bit "meh" about it. I feel I should love it but I don't. When I see it looking stunning on the TV I think "yes, gorgeous" but never the same when I've been there, even in glorious sun and in quieter areas.

Whereas parts of Devon I have been back to again and again and again. I'm not so keen on the north but adore the South Hams - Dartmouth, Salcombe, Kingsbridge, all the creeks, Noss Mayo, Newton Ferrers. Dartmoor is also stunning if you enjoy a good walk, even if it's a bit of a bleak grey day. Torquay is a bit of a shithole, mind.

creepingbuttercupdrivesmemad · 27/02/2018 08:35

Both are fantastic! I think they each have different things to offer:
Cornwall is wild and rugged; Devon is curvaceous and verdant (my usual analogy is that Cornwall is male and Devon is female, but the MN police will immediately jump on that!)

creepingbuttercupdrivesmemad · 27/02/2018 08:35

... but of course it depends on which part of each county that you visit.

ShatnersWig · 27/02/2018 08:39

PS I have neither jam nor cream on my scones. And plain scones only. None of that fruit or cheese nonsense.

scaryteacher · 27/02/2018 08:51

That's what is great about the Tamar Valley; easy access to Devon, but more bangs for your buck in housing. I could get to 5 towns with secondary schools within 30 minutes at most, so as a teacher I had more options.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 27/02/2018 09:02

I lived in cornwall for 15 years and I absolutely hated it. Now live in Exeter which I love. I only go back to cornwall wen I absolutely have to, to visit family.

Poppywoppy · 27/02/2018 09:08

I've done both several times and much prefer Cornwall

LakieLady · 27/02/2018 09:09

Newquay is not a good representation of Cornwall. Other areas don't have the stag parties in such volume.
Please don't judge us on Newquay.

We go to Cornwall at least once a year, often more, but I have never been to Newquay. DP just refuses, on the grounds that "it's a shithole".
I feel I should insist, just so that I can satisfy myself that he is right.
