To campaign for a blanket ban on the word ‘brunch’

I can’t bear it. Soooo pretentious...

Breakfast, lunch, late breakfast, early lunch - yes.
Brunch - no.

Everytime I see an Insta photo hashtagged brunch I inwardly sigh.

Am I the only one? Are you a bruncher too? If so, shame on you 😄

I think supper has been purloined by the middle classes to mean a casual dinner eg "come round on Tuesday for supper - it'll just be lasagne at the kitchen table" sort of thing.

The really annoying people (if that wasn't annoying enough) are those who call it "sups" (or is it supps?) to truly indicate it's artless casualness and their utter hipness

Patienceisvirtuous · 20/02/2018 09:34

I thought sups was drinks 😄

Sparklingbrook · 20/02/2018 09:37

No drinks are drinks. Grin

What time would that be Bit? I wouldn't know when to arrive.

InsomniacAnonymous · 20/02/2018 15:46

AbsolutelyCorking "Brunch is AWFUL. The only people I know who say it are really pretentious. It’s not even a word!"

Of course it's a word. It's in the dictionary and was coined in the late 19th century! en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/brunch

Littlepleasures · 20/02/2018 16:37

Once I’d been high protein, low carbing for a while, I realised I wasn’t feeling hungry till early afternoon so I now have my first meal of the day between 12 and 2 depending on what I’m doing that day. I call it brunch as I often have traditional breakfast food then, like boiled eggs and toast with grapefruit which I had today. Yum.

StoatofDisarray · 20/02/2018 16:40

Sorry, YABU. Brunch is a thing, and it's excellent - the next best meal after Afternoon Tea, IMHO.

LemonysSnicket · 20/02/2018 18:24

Most lunches also run from 12pm-3pm which I don’t get.... that’s lunch/late lunch.

LemonysSnicket · 20/02/2018 18:24

Brunches*

LetBartletBeBartlet · 20/02/2018 18:44

Those who think brunch is pretentious and/or American - were you not aware of brunch prior to Instagram/social media?

Patienceisvirtuous · 20/02/2018 20:34

Yes I was aware of brunch. It didn’t bother me until people started using the word to promote their aspirational lifestyle on socmed.

Brunch has been around since forever.

I used to brunch back in the day.

But it has turned into a somewhat ridiculous concept.

TheDowagerCuntess · 21/02/2018 06:28

socmed Grin

PrimeraVez · 21/02/2018 07:10

I'm in the Middle East and brunch is A Big Deal here. But weirdly, places serve brunch 12-4 (or 1-4 if they're mean) so really it should be Linner?

BitOutOfPractice · 21/02/2018 07:18

Sparkling sups is late. Come at nine.

Minniemountain · 21/02/2018 07:34

What's wrong with supper?

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2018 07:38

Fab Bit. Do I bring a bottle?

Actually 9 is very late for lasagne, I will also bring a bottle of Gaviscon maybe. Grin

SharronNeedles · 21/02/2018 07:39

I only use it if it's preceded by the word bottomless

BitOutOfPractice · 21/02/2018 07:56

Yeah well is sups people are bohemian type. This is Hampstead after all.

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2018 07:58

I guess sups people don't have to get up at 5am for work. Grin

Princess9891 · 21/02/2018 08:53

Why the fuck do people seem to think they can arbitrarily ban words cause they don't like them. Get a grip

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2018 09:00

Of course they can't ban them, but they are allowed to discuss a wish to ban them in the AIBU topic on MN aren't they? Grin

BitOutOfPractice · 21/02/2018 09:09

Have you actually read the thread Princess? Because your comment is not in the spirit of it at all Hmm

No, us sups types are either artists, actors, in meeeeedddiaaaaar, or part of the intelligennsia. No nine to five for us sups folk

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2018 09:12

You could do a quick sups followed by a nightshift perhaps?

troodiedoo · 21/02/2018 09:17

Brunch is fantastic. Two meals in one, what's not to love?

Instagram on the other hand is a narcissistic wankfest. No good will ever come of it. That's your problem.

coconutlimesmoosh · 21/02/2018 09:20

Brunch is AWFUL. The only people I know who say it are really pretentious. It’s not even a word!

Of course its a word. Hmm It's pretentious to use words and understand what they are? wtf?
