To campaign for a blanket ban on the word ‘brunch’

I can’t bear it. Soooo pretentious...

Breakfast, lunch, late breakfast, early lunch - yes.
Brunch - no.

Everytime I see an Insta photo hashtagged brunch I inwardly sigh.

Am I the only one? Are you a bruncher too? If so, shame on you 😄

@ForalltheSaints - it's not an American word. It was first used in the UK in 1895 by a British journalist.

Patienceisvirtuous · 20/02/2018 07:50

@Justanotherzombie ...I get out plenty thanks - just not for brunch!

Why would you want to ban something which is enjoyable? If you don’t like it, no one is forcing you to go. It’s a big part of our weekend and has been for 25 years so I’ve no plans to change it!

Pfftkids · 20/02/2018 07:59

PeerieBreeks lunkfast it is from now on thanks Grin

Sometimes I have dunch which I like too. Will that be banned?

Pfftkids · 20/02/2018 08:02

*Saracen

But it's a really useful word! In our house it means "you had better inhale plenty of what's in front of you because there will be no more meals until tonight - you have been warned".*

This is what it means in my house 😂

BeesAndChiscuits · 20/02/2018 08:04

I hate brunch because I feel like I’ve been cheated out of a meal Blush

EnglishGirlApproximately · 20/02/2018 08:05

I love brunch! What the hell is Friyay? Is it like celebrating Friday? Obviously coined and only used by people who don’t work weekends Hmm

BothersomeCrow · 20/02/2018 08:14

If brunch makes you feel cheated out of a meal, you're doing it wrong. There should be so much food of deliciousness that you're grateful not to eat until dinnertime!

Sparklingbrook · 20/02/2018 08:15

I have never heard Friyay in RL. And yes, no such thing as celebrating Friday if you work in a job like retail.

Eolian · 20/02/2018 08:19

It's a slightly silly-sounding word, but I don't see why it's pretentious.

drumandthebass · 20/02/2018 08:39

DS coined the phrase TUNCH which is obviously a late lunch/early tea. (3 o'clock time)

orangesticker · 20/02/2018 08:46

Would see the point in saying late breakfast - it would be perfectly obvious that the time was late.
Bunch for us is a substantial meal - not just cereal/porridge/granola - those things would just be breakfast. Brunch is something like Huevos rancheros, a big fry up, hash browns with fried eggs and bacon, kedgeree, omelette, shakshuka and it can be at home or eaten out.

beepthemeep · 20/02/2018 08:47

I think you may be doing brunch wrong!

Group of friends, lazing away mid morning and lunchtime over amazing food and prosecco/Bloody Mary etc.

What on earth is not to like?! Grin

Sparklingbrook · 20/02/2018 08:48

If someone asks you to go for brunch it's very clear what you will be doing. Having a meal between breakfast and lunch.

Nobody has to get up early,or eat breakfast. Smile

RoryAndLogan · 20/02/2018 08:57

Brunch is my favourite meal. I want to campaign for it to be a requirement every day not just at the weekend.

midnightmisssuki · 20/02/2018 09:00

i love brunch.. not too keen on 'tea' which is actually supper! Tea is for drinking! Smile

ShirleyPhallus · 20/02/2018 09:03

Brunch at around 11-12 = acceptable
Use of the word brunch beyond 1pm = unacceptable
Use of word brunch TO AN EVENT WHICH STARTS AT 5pm = entirely unreasonable and fucking awful tbh. I declined that social event for that reason alone.

calzone · 20/02/2018 09:04

Supper is the word that makes me retch......🤢🤢🤢

Sparklingbrook · 20/02/2018 09:04

Brunch at 5pm? That is not right!

Chocolatesaveslives · 20/02/2018 09:04

Brunch is the best meal of the day!!

ShirleyPhallus · 20/02/2018 09:05

Brunch at 5pm? That is not right!

I know. It made me furious.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/02/2018 09:11

@iklboo you genuinely made me lol. Thank you!

Love a lot bit of brunch in the BOOP household. Partly because it invariably follows a lie in and often includes a bloody mary.

So OP I think you need to cool your beans about brunch

BitOutOfPractice · 20/02/2018 09:12

5pm brunch? There are laws against that kind of thing, surely!

BitOutOfPractice · 20/02/2018 09:13

@calzone then you must positively implode at "sups" Angry

Sparklingbrook · 20/02/2018 09:30

What is 'sups'? Supper?

Isn't that just a very, very late dinner?

Or in this house a slice of toast before bed. Grin
