To campaign for a blanket ban on the word ‘brunch’

I can’t bear it. Soooo pretentious...

Breakfast, lunch, late breakfast, early lunch - yes.
Brunch - no.

Everytime I see an Insta photo hashtagged brunch I inwardly sigh.

Am I the only one? Are you a bruncher too? If so, shame on you 😄

No, it's not pretentious or new or hip. I grew up in Australia and have been using that word (and eating it!!!) for literally decades.

Shockers · 19/02/2018 22:39

What the flip is friyay?

Quadrangle · 19/02/2018 22:45

Ha ha at Why do you HATE FUN?

cablewable · 19/02/2018 23:07

Ok...

Oh my god, it's Friday, yay.
Yay, it's Friday.
It's Friyay 😷😷😷😷

fatalAttractions · 20/02/2018 01:01

It's my favourite meal. A 4 hour-long affair at an amazing buffet with plenty of Champers.

Poached eggs and coffee. God no. That's just breakfast. It might be breakfast for lunch. Our DCs favourite is 'breakfast for dinner' which is a fry up as the evening meal.

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 20/02/2018 01:13

A place I worked at tried to make Slunch happen (as in Sunday Lunch). They put it on the specials board and on the menu. Not one customer ever said it. They dropped it when at a staff meeting I said it randomly conjured up images of catheters and sterile wipes.

halfwitpicker · 20/02/2018 01:18

Doesn't bother me that much really.

halfwitpicker · 20/02/2018 01:19

Slunch Grin

halfwitpicker · 20/02/2018 01:19

Hump day, however, gets my goat. Total pet peeve.

AbsolutelyCorking · 20/02/2018 01:22

Brunch is AWFUL. The only people I know who say it are really pretentious. It’s not even a word! The same kind of people who are tiddly by noon because they can’t enjoy themselves without alcohol. Not people I like to hang out with.

Cavender · 20/02/2018 01:27

Brunch is absolutely a word Corking. And it does not have to contain alcohol.

Perhaps you know the wrong kind of people..,

Saracen · 20/02/2018 01:28

But it's a really useful word! In our house it means "you had better inhale plenty of what's in front of you because there will be no more meals until tonight - you have been warned".

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/02/2018 01:32

I have to admit, I agree.

DB and his partner brunch a lot, and I always 😬 at it a bit.

I'm probably just jealous, because brunch inevitably means you've slept in on a Sunday, and are enjoying leisurely time out in a restaurant with no demands on your time.

Sparklingbrook · 20/02/2018 05:09

Brunch is a proper word. And a proper thing.

LanguidLobster · 20/02/2018 05:31

I use brunch, sorry!

It just means I didn't have breakfast at the 'normal' time.

zaalitje · 20/02/2018 06:16

OP can you take grab a bite' and 'choc' with you please

SharonMott · 20/02/2018 06:22

We stop for coffee most days but sometimes it's missed and we have it later with a meal and call it cunch. Now THAT is catchy! Grin Grin

RhiWrites · 20/02/2018 06:45

I love brunch. Poached eggs on sweet corn pancakes, spinach with hollandaise, bubble and squeak, veggie bacon and maple syrup.

I feel sorry for those of you so anti brunch that you know not these delights.

I like alcohol too but don’t require it at brunch.

ElizaDontlittle · 20/02/2018 06:53

Brunch as a word/concept has been around for years - it's not just an Instagram trend or a modern cringe making word - as a child I used to get really hungry between brunch at 10:30 and tea time but yesteady I had scrambled eggs on toast about 11 and still wasn't hungry when I got home from work at 6.

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/02/2018 06:57

A new one I heard recently is 'prinks' - pre drinks - drinks before dinner or before going out out.

cornishmumtobe · 20/02/2018 07:00

God damn I'm so hungry now. I'm up with newborn DS and if he ever sleeps I'm just going to be dreaming of pancakes. Envy

MaisyPops · 20/02/2018 07:03

Brunch is awesome and not pretentious at all.
I'll do a gym session ir a run with friends and go for brunch after. It's just coffee and some food (mainly because we don't eat loads before exercise). Nothing fancy.

I have to admit sitting arouns for hours drinking prosecco mid morning whilst brunching does sound quite pretentious to me (and very much like people having cocktails with #thesegirls)

ForalltheSaints · 20/02/2018 07:07

I agree with the OP. An American term we can do without. We voted to take back control (allegedly) and that should include the language.

Sparklingbrook · 20/02/2018 07:11

I never have alcohol with brunch.

Justanotherzombie · 20/02/2018 07:14

Pretentious? Lol. You need to get out more OP.
