To campaign for a blanket ban on the word ‘brunch’

I can’t bear it. Soooo pretentious...

Breakfast, lunch, late breakfast, early lunch - yes.
Brunch - no.

Everytime I see an Insta photo hashtagged brunch I inwardly sigh.

Am I the only one? Are you a bruncher too? If so, shame on you 😄

Don't worry @Pfftkids. I have a solution.

Lunkfast!

Patienceisvirtuous · 19/02/2018 21:45

See lunkfast isn’t at all pretentious. It works for me! 😄

Backingvocals · 19/02/2018 21:46

Lunkfast sounds amazing. I bet it’s fried in lard, whatever it is.

Eliza9917 · 19/02/2018 21:46

If you hate brunch, call it elevenses?

StripySocksAndDocs · 19/02/2018 21:48

I don't think I've heard the word brunch for years!! Has it been cordoned?

Or maybe I have.

Move to Ireland OP. Not sure I've ever heard it here.

SylvesterMcM0nkeyMcBean · 19/02/2018 21:52

Brinner has already been invented by Scrubs Grin

InsomniacAnonymous · 19/02/2018 21:54

I don't think there's anything pretentious about the word brunch at all. It's just a useful word.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 19/02/2018 21:55

I love the word 'brunch' because it bring back happy memories of our youngest DS screaming 'NOOOOO! There's NO SUCH WORD as BRUNCH! You just made that up to DO ME OUT OF A MEAL!!!!'

We all fell about in hysterics. The child was being refused lunch (around 12.30) on the grounds that we'd all just eaten a large 'brunch' about three quarters of an hour earlier.

Now in his teens and still insists firmly 'There is no such word as Brunch'.

iklboo · 19/02/2018 21:56

I suppose if you won't Brunch at least Yul Brinner? Grin

Shockers · 19/02/2018 21:56

I was born in the sixties and we always had a Saturday brunch when I was a child.

It isn’t a new word!

Backingvocals · 19/02/2018 21:58

Brunch is one of my favourite things (the concept - don’t have strong feelings either way about the word itself). However it’s something you go out for, has to be something a bit ‘fancier’ than you’d have at home and is preferably accompanied by alcohol. When we sleep in at the weekend and don’t eat till around midday - which is most Sundays round ours - that’s just a late breakfast.

MrsJayy · 19/02/2018 22:01

We sometimes have brinner at tea time

cablewable · 19/02/2018 22:05

I love having brunch myself but I do get the same slight cringe when I see #brunch #girlies #girlsquad #naughty #prosecco on an Instagram photo.

Backingvocals · 19/02/2018 22:14

See adding # to anything makes it naff. I don’t think that’s the fault of brunch. I think it’s a perfectly ok word of reasonably long heritage that’s been hashtagged into naffness. My guess is that it predates friyay by decades. Could never say friyay but love brunch as a word and a concept.

cablewable · 19/02/2018 22:17

Yes I just googled..... brunch was first used in print in 1895. Not sure friyay will beat that 😂

Backingvocals · 19/02/2018 22:18

I just looked it up - first coined by Punch in 1896 and it’s a portmanteau word doncha know. So gravitas and heritage. Up With Brunch !

Backingvocals · 19/02/2018 22:18

X post ! Agree it ain’t no friyay Grin

Patienceisvirtuous · 19/02/2018 22:20

Well I still hate it stamps feet

We go out for brunch most Sundays. It is the highlight of the week...American pancakes with maple syrup and bacon, Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon, Porridge with an assortment of fresh fruit and mini Danish pastries and much much more.

MissEliza · 19/02/2018 22:27

YABVU brunch is the best meal!
