Which theories, dismissed by many as conspiracy theories, do you regard as the truth?

Mothers used to clamour for vaccines because they had seen the real harm these illnesses caused.

Indeed. My Nana despaired when people started the "I know Wakefield is discredited, but you can't be too careful..." stuff and started avoiding the MMR. She was 1 of 16 children, her parents lost 9 to measles, and they weren't particularly unusual.

wintermonster · 19/02/2018 17:50

@VotePedroPony

Sounds interesting - what's the conspiracy there?

beluga425 · 19/02/2018 17:50

Well, of course they believed witchcraft was true. But the source of the dangers in the Massachusetts Bay Colony had nothing to do with witches. The colonists were deluded.
Well people who believe in the more extreme conspiracies would compare the current general populace to those colonists. Thats what people mean when they talk about being "woke"

Who knows what is going on in reality. Maybe in 2418 people will talk about how people in the 21st century made sense of their world pre knowledge of our alien masters or before discovery of the matrix!

Or maybe not. Grin

Please not who I think it is. There have been rumours on other threads.

Autism is proven to be heredity. Monozygotic twins are either both autistic, or neither. Regardless of immunisation status.
I questioned the issue before I actually studied the origin

Really ? Dh doesn't have it but his identical twin brother has aspergers. I always said the researchers would love to get hold of them!

DotForShort · 19/02/2018 17:56

That isn't the point I was making about the Salem witch trials. I think the colonists were very similar to contemporary conspiracy theorists. As I said, I find the similarities interesting from a psychological point of view.

I certainly hope conspiracy theorists haven't appropriated the word "woke"! In its slang meaning, the word has to do with awareness of social injustice, especially in the context of racism.

Notwell

Would it be An American Tail if it came out about this man?

beluga425 · 19/02/2018 18:01

Dot I got what you meant, but just meant that you could switch it round. The colonists had their (very real to them) view of how things were. We have ours. They were wrong. Could our view of reality be equally as wrong. Could it actually be covering up a far more unsightly reality- the uncomfortable chaos you describe.

No. Smile

The Marconi deaths Shock

I'm fascinated to know more. There is no no no way it can just be coincidence.

If there is a reason behind all those deaths then it begs the question " just what is it thst "thry" are trying to hide?"

Justwanttosayplease · 19/02/2018 18:04

I'm firmly behind TabbyMac . Great post.

Only go with what you personally have experience of. Forget my number 2, it's not something I want to talk about here. My number 3 is however the thing that concerns me most.

DotForShort · 19/02/2018 18:05

What? I know what "woke" means. I gave the definition above. I just hope conspiracy theorists aren't trying to appropriate it. Shudder.

beluga425 · 19/02/2018 18:05

Oh come on dot how could you possibly know?

Can anyone do a quick rundown of Marconi? I’m on my phone and lazy

Notwellbitch · 19/02/2018 18:08

Would it be An American Tail if it came out about this man?

Im not talking about that director (although allegedly him too) but you're ambling in the right area

BeyondTerfyCassandra · 19/02/2018 18:13

What, him?! Shock

Yeah, that would certainly be shocking!

DotForShort · 19/02/2018 18:14

How could I possibly know that my perception of reality makes more sense than that of people who believed witches could fly through the air and cast spells that caused illness or made pregnancies last three years? Hmm, no idea how I could know that.

This thread is becoming far too much like my day job. Smile

VotePedroPony · 19/02/2018 18:19

@wintermonster long story short - man is wrongfully convicted of a violent rape, cleared through DNA evidence after serving 18 years in prison.

He had a huge law suit for wrongful conviction against the police department that was nearing conclusion, when
2 years after his release he is charged with the murder of a young woman last seen on his car lot. He denies any wrong doing, and it's claimed that the police framed him so that the law suit would be closed and the police would no longer have "egg on their faces" for arresting him earlier as he was arguably a dangerous man who was better locked up.

The most harrowing part of the case for me was the involvement of his 16 year old nephew who had clear learning difficulties. The police interview of him us absolutely shocking - persistent leading questions, brow beating the poor lad into a confession of sorts. I feel fairly certain he, at least, is innocent. Steven... I just can't make my mind up.

I can't recommend the documentary series enough.

beluga425 · 19/02/2018 18:19

Yes, conspiracy theorists are referring to being woke. One of the definitions in the link is, but I've seen it a few times down various internet rabbit holes recently.

Autism is proven to be heredity. Monozygotic twins are either both autistic, or neither. Regardless of immunisation status.

They are much more likely, but it’s not 100%. It’s perfectly possibly to have monozygotic twins where one has autism and one doesn’t. Autism is predominantly genetic, but it’s very complex involving multiple genes.

There’s lots of work done on the Salem witch trials. One theory is ergot poisoning. Another is a complex web of intra-community grudges and power plays. Similar was seen in later witch trials in England. There are cases of men making advances on young women, being rejected and then the men accusing them of witchcraft. It’s the dark underbelly of human society laid bare :(

dustarr73 · 19/02/2018 18:38

So you think I'm part of a concerted campaign to stop you from discussing plausible conspiracies?

Who do you think is paying me for it?

My moneys on Shergar and Lord Lucan

wintermonster · 19/02/2018 18:41

Thanks @VotePedroPony I will save the series to watch next 👍🏻

ManicUnicorn · 19/02/2018 18:56

I'm inclined to think Hitler survived the war and was spirited away somewhere. Probably Argentina. It's a known fact that other high ranking Nazis ended up there. Stalin apparently never believed that Hitler killed himself, and the body that as thought to be his wasn't.

I find a lot of the 9/11 stuff offensive, however I believe there is slightly more weight in the argument that United 91 Was shot down as opposed to being crashed by passengers who'd stormed the cockpit.
