Trump Talk: or, Lift every voice and sing

lionheart · 17/02/2018 19:58

It's Black History Month and the fight goes on (plus, we all need a boost that does not come from ye olde hop flask).

Lift every voice and sing

Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,

Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,

God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by Thy might

Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,

May we forever stand.

True to our God,
True to our native land.

James Weldon Johnson (1900)

blueskyinmarch - it's patently clear to you and me that he is deranged. I am still stuck on the fact he has been in situ for over a year now and nothing has been done to remove him. I can't get past the fact that an obvious nutter (to use the technical psychiatric term) has been elected and just allowed to get on with his crap. The contrast between Obama and him is mind-boggling.
(Sorry, I know I said I was gone but between this arm the teachers thing and the uni lecturers' strike, I'm in a bit of a state today.)

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/02/2018 13:37

I still can't get over the fact he needed a cheat sheet with "I hear you" on it. How lacking in humanity must he be for that to be fed to him?

AcrossthePond55 · 22/02/2018 13:46

I was so proud of those young people. The way they stood up to the 'adults' and demanded answers, not obfuscation and redirection. You could tell that Rubio was stunned that he wasn't allowed to get away with non-answers. And that he didn't expect such loud disapproval.

That woman from the NRA disgusted me. The way she kept referring to 'crazy people'. She basically said that only 'crazy people' carry out gun violence. It was a vicious stab directly in the heart of every person who has or knows someone who has a mental illness. Vastly more people who have mental illnesses are on the receiving end of cruelty and violence than will ever carry out a violent act. I'd say that she's sold her soul to the devil, but I don't believe she ever had one to sell.

We were on the road during the 'listening session'. We caught a bit of it on CNN radio (thanks Sirius XM) but not the whole thing. And of course, no visual of Scrotus and his 'crib notes'. DS1 sent me a closeup in which someone had photoshopped an additional question "Who did you vote for?". That about sums it up. I'm sure all Scrotus heard during the whole thing was "la la la when do I play golf la la la I'm the greatest la la la". You know, his usual internal monologue.

OuaisMaisBon · 22/02/2018 13:46

He has no gravitas, no presence in a presidential senxe, no humanity. No brains either. But manipulative as hell, nonetheless.

OuaisMaisBon · 22/02/2018 13:46

The Parkland youngsters are amazing ambassadors for their country. A teenager with fire in their belly is hard to beat!

I was watching him closely live on Sky and he honestly looked a bit vacant at times, I just think he filters out what he doesn't want to hear. He has to force himself to listen to, for instance, the young lad who talked of assault weapons being banned - he was just staring into space at that point. And there was one time when all cameras focussed on him to say something and there was a long pregnant pause as he was totally silent. So, yes Across I think he was at the 19th hole or whatever.

When he talked of mental institutions and weren't they great - that was really awkward.

What many people don’t understand, or don’t want to understand, is that Wayne, Chris and the folks who work so hard at the @NRA are Great People and Great American Patriots. They love our Country and will do the right thing. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

lljkk · 22/02/2018 15:04

"they're not sending their best." NRA members... "and many, I assume, are good people"

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/02/2018 15:37

For those of a stronger constitution that I masochists Daniel dale has a thread about cpac which I started reading then had to close. This from Caroline is an example of the level of egregiousness

Wow, Dana Loesch just stole the rallying cry of Stoneman Douglas shooting survivor Emma Gonzalez ("we call BS") and used it to make a disingenuous call for looser gun laws. This is sick.

Just so sad that all those poor people who poured their hearts out in the most emotionally charged way at the question yesterday... did so in vain.

Pages back now but the blonde woman who was so eloquent at the listening session was indeed Nicole Hockley who is my friend who lost her gorgeous boy, Dylan at Sandy Hook.

I've only seen her once since that tragedy as she's clearly got a lot on her plate but she is incredible and is so so determined to change things. I did link to a piece she did on MSNBC shortly after Parkland but it's non-stop as we know so trying to keep up is intense.

I am so hopeful that these powerful, smart and vocal advocates for gun control are able to make the difference that is so desperately needed. I keep swinging between 'maybe this time' to 'nothing will change'.. and waking up to the Arm the Teachers news this morning was pretty hard to stomach Sad

Fekko · 22/02/2018 15:58

He probably thought now that’s John Wayne. Oh well at least we know exactly whose pocket he sits in.

Roussette · 22/02/2018 16:09

SanFran she was just so wonderful, knowledgeable, and it shone through how much she cares and how much work she is putting in.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/02/2018 16:09

I don’t think it’s in vain. It’s moved th discourse on from thinking it was an untouchable issue to one that the nra are clearly terrified they might be losing traction on, so far as to attach victims of the attack. And it was unlikely that it would have wrought an overnight change - though that would have been incredible - but it’s gaining momentum in the right direction

@RVAwonk
NRA chief Wayne LaPierre is now incoherently screaming about socialism. This is a new level of insanity for the NRA.

And you know what's causing it? They're scared. Because they know the kids at Stoneman Douglas are more powerful than their money.

Dear liberals and Democrats:

If you are angry at Trump and the GOP over guns, here's an answer.

Win back ground on the state level.

Some of the biggest gov races are unfolding in states with weak regulations and high gun deaths.

My new post:

Also in here:

In an interview with me, the head of the campaign arm for Dem gov candidates tells me Dems won't shy away from gun violence as an issue, even in purple states.

It's another sign of the cultural shift underway among Dems:

HOLY SHIT. Just now at CPAC, @SebGorka just raised his hand and threatened to hit @Mediaite reporter @calebecarma, then got in his face, told him to fuck off and shoved him.

Also a reminder that the @NRA is under FBI investigation for possible violations of FEC laws for allegedly laundering Russian money into our 2016 election: $30 million in donations to Trump.

Trump said he's considering pulling ICE out of California: "We're getting no help from the state of California. Frankly, if I wanted to pull our people from California you would have a crime nest like you would never seen in California."
