Trump Talk: or, Lift every voice and sing

lionheart · 17/02/2018 19:58

It's Black History Month and the fight goes on (plus, we all need a boost that does not come from ye olde hop flask).

Lift every voice and sing

Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,

Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,

God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by Thy might

Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,

May we forever stand.

True to our God,
True to our native land.

James Weldon Johnson (1900)

I am not a fan of the manipulative soundtracks they've used for Trump and Obama - I think it dilutes what is an obvious contrast that doesn't need any schmaltzy gimmicks (so maybe watch it on mute!) but it was still stark to see a comparison of timelines

New charges have been filed in Mueller's criminal case against Paul Manafort and aide Rick Gates, but the charges were put under seal by the court, obscuring the nature and import of the development, Politico reports.

Mueller asking if Manafort promised banker White House job in return for loans

1/ New charges filed under seal in the criminal case against Manafort and Gates. The fact that the indictment is under seal suggests that either new defendants were added (more likely) or allegations that need to be redacted before they are made public.
2/ New charges against Manafort and Gates would strengthen a case that already appears to be overwhelming, with conspiracy charges spanning years and certain crimes (like failure to disclose foreign bank accounts or to register as a foreign agent) that appear easy to prove.
3/ The charges could give Gates a reason to flip on Manafort, which has been rumored. Given the array of charges against him, it's hard to see why Gates hasn't flipped already unless he's unhappy with the terms offered by Mueller. /end

I think these students will be quite capable of standing up to the onslaught from online bullies. Hopefully they will make sure they don't get too exhausted and allow themselves some 'down time' as well.

From Washington Post:

“I am not a crisis actor. I’m somebodythat had to witness this and live through this and I continue to have to do that,” 17-year-old Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School senior David Hogg toldCNN’s Anderson Cooper. “The fact that some of the students at Stoneman Douglas high school … are showing more maturity and political action than many of our elected officials is a testament to how disgusting and broken our political system is right now in America. But we’re trying to fix that.”

He was quickly backed up by fellow students. Sarah Chadwick, for example,tweetedthat Hogg “can’t act to save his life,” adding that the fact some people think he is being paid “is hilarious.”

'The pro-Trump media chose a political enemy effectively born onto the internet and innately capable of waging an information war.'

From that Buzzfeed article:

They use platforms like Twitter to call out and put pressure on politicians. They address prominent critics like Bill O’Reilly not with bland, carefully written statements, but by dunking on them, and they respond to misinformation in real-time with their own viral, emoji-laden posts. Rather than take the bait on the crisis actor narrative, they opted to have fun with the conspiracy theories by mocking them. “I’m thankful that there are people out there finding my doppelgangers for me. I’ve always wanted to have a party with a room full of people who look like me,” Emma Gonzalez, a Parkland student, told BuzzFeed News. By dismissing the conspiracies for what they are — a tired, rather boring page in the Infowars playbook — Gonzalez and her classmates have stripped them of their power. Before the pro-Trump media can finish its line of attack, the students, unfazed, have moved on, staying one step ahead of their political enemies and owning the story.
The pro-Trump media will no doubt continue its onslaught. And because the online ecosystems that undergird all of these interactions are deeply broken, the assault against David Hogg and his classmates will likely continue to spread across platforms like YouTube and Facebook and Twitter. But unlike the pro-Trump media’s usual enemies, the Parkland students innately understand how to use this broken system to their advantage. They know intuitively what the pro-Trump media has known (and used to its benefit) for years now: The way to win an information war is not to shy away from conflict online, but to lean into it.

I feel my musings are vindicated! Either that or Buzzfeed are reading our thread again (in which case I am happy to accept a small credit in the footnotes) Grin Wink

Probably, not. I think it's more likely to be a 'great minds think alike' thing, but we do tend to say stuff just before the media quite a lot, so who knows Wink
