Trump Talk: or, Lift every voice and sing

It's Black History Month and the fight goes on (plus, we all need a boost that does not come from ye olde hop flask).

Lift every voice and sing

Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,

Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,

God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by Thy might

Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,

May we forever stand.

True to our God,
True to our native land.

James Weldon Johnson (1900)

In that case, you can claim that one. Smile

You should petition buzzfeed to have your name included in the byline bigly Grin

Just came back from a Liberal Democrat gathering with a nearby Lib Dem mp. I asked him whether he thought the Russian interference re:Brexit would ever fully be examined in the uk and he said that there hasn’t been concrete evidence of it having an impact here and in the US and that we weren’t set up to have a special counsel type figure looking into but that if things were turned up in America, it may impact here. It was disappointing and I didn’t get the sense it was any sort of priority, though I understand why. He did say he wished it was more widely known who was driving Brexit (this was after I said how worrying it was about bannon/Rees mogg) but I don’t think he meant anyone other than the tories, though he talked about Russians in relation to energy, and how much self interest played a part. I wanted to drill down deeper but it had already overrun by quite a bit so didn’t get to.

Need to find pictures of fluffy kittens to look at to try to resist pinning all hope on mueller pulling the house of cards down on this side of the pond.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 21/02/2018 22:45

(Which I know is highly unlikely but a very satisfying fantasy to have nonetheless)

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 21/02/2018 22:51

And this thread has utterly depressed me and is the antithesis of fluffy kittens

Just caught a clip of the blonde woman (mother?) on the televised listening session on the BBC News. She was very articulate and very well-briefed. Such powerful testimony and so direct in her requests.

cozietoesie · 22/02/2018 00:36

I think it was one of the mothers.

ohfortuna · 22/02/2018 01:19

did he mean for those crib notes to be visible?

OuaisMaisBon · 22/02/2018 04:57

I love that Pavlovic article, thank you, lionheart - but will any of the Evangelical nutters (or Trump) listen and comprehend?
PainInTheEar, that comparison video is - I was going to say "astounding", but given what we've come to expect from the Orange Bozo, words simply fail me.
Boat, cozie - I think the blonde woman was probably Nicole Hockley, mother of a 6 year old boy who was murdered at Sandy Hook. The only Parkhurst parent who lost a child there yesterday was Andrew Pollack, I think.
I'm off again, I'm afraid, the whole thing is making me feel despair.

cozietoesie · 22/02/2018 05:03

It could be so - I don't know the parents well.

Don't feel despair - I have the dawn chorus starting outside and that is truly cheering. Smile

Netanyahu case

boatyardblues · 22/02/2018 06:09

The Netanyahu case is interesting, given Donny’s close personal friendship. Birds of a feather flock together, as the saying goes.

cozietoesie · 22/02/2018 06:13

If my memory serves - and I'll stand to be corrected - Netanyahu was actually a commonplace guest in 45's father's house.

They go backaways anyway.

And if he's not around, what road will Javanka take?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/02/2018 06:24

I’m sure I read somewhere that they’ve slept in each others beds (cant remember which way round it would was and it wasn’t meant salaciously - the other person wasn’t still in their bed - but as a sign of how close they are)

I’ve only seen clips so far but here is a link to the full cnn town hall yesterday:

Pennsylvania Republicans ask Supreme Court to block new congressional map

mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN1G6036?__twitter_impression=true

Pennsylvania Republicans on Wednesday filed an emergency appeal asking the U.S. Supreme Court to block a new congressional map drawn by the state's top court from taking effect ahead of this year's mid-term elections.

[...]Wednesday's filing argued the state's top court failed to provide lawmakers with enough time or guidance to draw a new map before it stepped in and took over the process, usurping the legislature's constitutional authority to set congressional district lines.

The Republican leader of the state House, Mike Turzai, said in an interview that the new map was "clearly partisan."

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has five Democratic justices and two Republicans and voted along strict party lines to throw out the old map.

In a statement on Wednesday, a spokesman for Democratic Governor Tom Wolf did not address the appeal, instead saying the governor was focused on ensuring the state was prepared to use the new map for May's primary elections.

Lawyers representing the non-partisan League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania, which filed the lawsuit that led to the court's ruling, said on Tuesday that any new litigation would waste taxpayer dollars.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday encouraged his fellow Republicans to contest the new map in court.

The case is one of several nationwide challenging partisan gerrymandering, in which lines are manipulated to bolster one party at the expense of another. The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to decide similar cases from Wisconsin and Maryland this year.

A powerful piece. And wasn't Rubio weak?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/02/2018 06:44

From the bits I’ve seen, yes. I can’t imagine he was able to do much other than be ineffectual and incapable, given he’s traded in his spine, heart, guts etc for nra donations

I've had a loaded gun pointed at me. It wasn't an assault weapon - thank Goodness - but it was still terrifying.

It's guns that are the problem.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 22/02/2018 07:07

Fuck. That must’ve been utterly petrifying.

I don’t get the comparisons made to cars -“they can kill people too” “it’s all about who’s hands there in!” “You wouldn’t want and to it a take way cars!”

Apart from the fact you have to have licenses, insurance, can’t drive under intoxication etc when cars started being used to drive into groups of people, it wasn’t the case that people shrugged their shoulders and said well nothing’s can be done. Bollards in high pedestrian areas have been erected, defensive action was taken. But 2RA (gun manufacturers) trumps actual lives, including those of children.

This clip of Rubio inadvertently stumbling on the answer is great

Guns are 'easy'. As Lieutenant Kenda once put it - 'a permanent solution to a temporary problem'.

Most people - the overwhelming majority, Thank Goodness (they've never 'seen') - have no idea of the damage they do. They're raised on Westerns where peope (villains) delicately fold and the good guys recover.
