Rinsing

Mookie81 · 15/02/2018 14:46

Growing up we never had a dishwasher and my mum would always rinse the soap off the dishes after washing them. Had a dishwasher for the last 10 years so never thought anymore about it. Now I don't have one and I've been rinsing the dishes after washing them. Was away with friends earlier this week and after washing the dishes they put them straight on the drainer then put them away when dry. Am I being ridiculous to rinse the soap off?!

YANBU. Rinsing is mandatory!

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 15/02/2018 14:47

Ugh. Definitely not BU. Your friend needs to start rinsing their dishes.

AnyUsernameWillDo75 · 15/02/2018 14:47

I rinse them too. Otherwise all the chemicals from the soap would stay on dishes.

UpstartCrow · 15/02/2018 14:48

Yanbu. My vet says you shouldn't put pet dishes in the dishwasher because the residue of the salt and bleach cleaners can give them mouth ulcers.
So based on that, I'd rinse.

EfficiencyDeficiency · 15/02/2018 14:49

Op you are totally right!

The number of people I've seen just dunking their dishes in water ( some of it a bit manky looking ) and then just putting them on the drainer is shocking.

Fish/chips and fairy liquid for dinner anyone?

YANBU. You definitely need to rinse. Soap bubbles leave marks and sometimes stickiness and it's just... ick.

lizzlebizzle33 · 15/02/2018 14:52

Rinse rinse rinse!!!

ShotsFired · 15/02/2018 14:55

Have never rinsed, don't intend to start (wasting water) and have never once thought anything I have eaten has tasted soapy.

It's just one of those MN laws though...

BeyondThePage · 15/02/2018 14:57

How much soap are you people using? No I don't rinse after washing. I do rinse BEFORE though.... keeps the washing up water much fresher.

Topseyt · 15/02/2018 15:02

I rinse if I do handwash anything. My parents don't. I have had soapy tea there occasionally.

Almost everything goes in the dishwasher here. That includes the dog food bowls and has for years. Never a problem. Dishwashers give three good rinses each cycle. That is more rinsing than I would do if I washed them by hand (once). So I think a vet saying otherwise can be taken with a large pinch of salt.

Chowmum · 15/02/2018 15:03

Many many years ago, my grandad was "babysitting" me and he made me a cup of tea Brew

It tasted odd. Sort of like Earl Grey, but with milk in. And my grandparents were not Earl Grey drinkers.

Took me most of the cup to realise it was probably Lemon Fairy.

I survived, can't say I'd recommend it. Envy

chaplin1409 · 15/02/2018 15:05

I don't rinse but if I was where would all the water go surely it would fill the sick up especially in my hour as there is 6 of everything

FuckyNellYaBastad · 15/02/2018 15:07

Christ no!

BookHelpPlease · 15/02/2018 15:08

Ew! Is she one of those people who just swills plates in a dirty bowl of water and thinks she's washing up. You need running water to clean stuff. YANBU!

TenancyTroublesAgain · 15/02/2018 15:08

It's hardly a MN law Hmm

TenancyTroublesAgain · 15/02/2018 15:09

Rinse every time. Gross.

Urubu · 15/02/2018 15:10

To the ones not rinsing: do you rinse your body after washing it? I imagine yes. Why is it different with dishes???

mumpoints · 15/02/2018 15:10

Rinsing is the correct way!

mumpoints · 15/02/2018 15:12

Whoops, posted too quickly.

I come from a long line of restaurant owners. Rinsing means a sparkling plate, one that is easier to polish once dried.

MuseumOfCurry · 15/02/2018 15:13

Surely the soap would transfer onto the food?

Caroelle · 15/02/2018 15:14

Years ago there was advice that all baby/ child plates, utensils etc should be rinsed after handwahing because of the soap residue. I e always rinsedbut DH doesn’t and it really annoys me.

GrannyGrissle · 15/02/2018 15:18

Surely you wash off bacteria and germs along with soap when doing the dishes under running water? Otherwise evrtything yuk stays on the plates etc surely.

nocake · 15/02/2018 15:24

Soap molecules attach themselves to grease molecules but you then need something to get it all off the plate. That's what rinsing is for. It's seems fairly obvious.

Birdsgottafly · 15/02/2018 15:24

"Its just one of those MN laws though."

It really isn't. Health professionals say to rinse. The washing up liquid we use today is different chemically than what our Parents/ GPs used (I'm 50).

I've been through the oncology system with different relatives and personally. I always ask questions like that and I've never had one say that they don't rinse.

For the amount that it rains in the UK and our Water Bills, if we can't use water for this reason, then serious questions need asking.

Someoneasdumbasthis · 15/02/2018 15:25

I never rinse. DH rinses. Drives him crazy (but then I literally shove EVERYTHING in the dishwasher)
