how many transgender people do you know

Just that really. I've only met one at work a man who had the change to a woman.
From the number of threads recently it would appear that people are bumping into trans people everywhere they turn.

Two, both in a relationship with each other as it happens

BothersomeCrow · 14/02/2018 17:15

Over 50, thanks to work and social circles. Mix of MtF, FtM and non-binary people (the latter tend to be younger).

I don't pretend to understand having a gender identity, but I know both cis and trans people who have one that is very important to them.

I do know a number of people (including me) who have been accused of being trans just for not looking 'appropriately feminine', and worry that the virulent anti-trans people will end up hurting women rather than protecting them.

The people who are currently phoning round trying to find out the birth name of a friend of mine who has lived as a woman full time for over 25 years, upsetting various people they have found with the same surname, are pure scum.

TonTonMacoute · 14/02/2018 17:16

None personally, although back in the 1960s I met Roberta Cowell several times, as she was a friend of my grandmother.

She was the first M to F transition in Britain, second in the world. An amazing character, former wartime fighter pilot and racing driver!

Mindhunter · 14/02/2018 17:16

I knew a lovely m2f lady who worked on a local shop had worked there for years and everyone accepted her. Sadly I don't think it bought her happiness as she sadly ended her life last year.

I did believe I was male for quite alot of my late teens early 20s as I just didn't feel like I was meant to be a woman because I didn't fit in. I have since learnt that I don't have to be feminine to be a woman but can understand how people can feel that way.

LittleCandle · 14/02/2018 17:17

Personally, none. Professionally, I have interacted with quite a number, all male to female.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 14/02/2018 17:19

None.

There is a F to M at work but I don't know him per se

ifigoup · 14/02/2018 17:20

I know around thirty trans people: a mix of friends, professional contacts, and students. This thread confirms to me that the majority of MN trans panic comes from those who've had little to do with actual trans people.

Krilla · 14/02/2018 17:21

Two, both MTF, both with GRCs, both with GRS.

It's pretty much a disaster. One of them has horrendous health issues, cannot find work, has been cut off from their previous NI contributions because they were made in their dead name so struggles to access benefits, and is very lonely.

The other I don't know too well, but doesn't seem to have a very good life.

maxthemartian · 14/02/2018 17:21

Two personally plus where I live now one sees loads every day.

ReelingLush18 · 14/02/2018 17:23

None that I've knowingly been aware of (ever). DD's in her first year at secondary school and she has three friends who identify as LGBT.

FrogPie · 14/02/2018 17:27

Two. Both FtM and both teenagers. One of them has transitioned already, the other hasn’t fully transitioned but hopes to once they turn eighteen.

Lovesagin · 14/02/2018 17:29

I'm transgender according to a self survey type thing by stonewall I think it was. And tbf I think most people I know are transgender too if I apply the same survey principles to them.

So, yea, pretty much everyone I know is transgender I guess!

IfNot · 14/02/2018 17:30

And I bet that most of these 30 "trans" people include "non-binary" and "gender non conforming"..
In which case, most people I know are "trans".
Fucking George from the famous 5 was "trans"..

Maddaddam · 14/02/2018 17:30

Blackberryfairy, maybe so, but maybe it doesn't have to be such a big deal. Dc1 wants to be acknowledged as having a non-binary identity, maybe a trans ftm identity in future, and we have all got used to that.

Even though the rest of us may feel it shouldn't be necessary, and we are busy presenting all sorts of alternative non-feminine ways of being women.

One of the things i like best about having teenagers is that they can really challenge my preconceptions. I thought I knew ALL about gender, sexuality, feminism. But my teens are making different arguments, and I'm shifting a bit.

MultiGrey · 14/02/2018 17:34

4 - none have had surgery.

Friend's teen F to M.

Friend's teen who went F to M and then back again.

Ex colleague M to F

Last is friends XH who likes to present as a woman, never dresses down, it is all about wearing a shit tonne of make up, short skirts and high heels and posing like a teenager on social media.

This is not a criticism before I get shot down in flames, I like this person but don't want to see pics of their arse cheeks hanging out of hot pants on a daily basis but those who have defriended on Facebook so as not to see these images have been slated for not being tolerant. No intention of surgery but very in your face about being "one of the girls"

Lovemusic33 · 14/02/2018 17:34

I know 2, both female to male, one was one of my best friends at school, the other I met on Tinder and became friends with, both lovely people and both mid 30’s.

user1486076969 · 14/02/2018 17:35

One, M to F

falang · 14/02/2018 17:35

None

CecilyNeville · 14/02/2018 17:36

The boy to girl at 6 one I listed above:

The parents say they started exhibiting female behaviours at 4. They described them as, "a girl's brain and a boy's body". Mermaids is involved in the family's life (shocker!)

BishBoshBashBop · 14/02/2018 17:37

2 one M-F and one F-M

Ragusa · 14/02/2018 17:38

Two. One person FTM and one MTF. but only one is in my immediate circle. I have a large family/social circle so not a high proportion at all.

Lovesagin · 14/02/2018 17:39

What were the female behaviours Cecily?

Lovemusic33 · 14/02/2018 17:41

Do 4 year olds present with male/female behaviours? I’m sure if you were in a room of 4 year olds they would all be acting similar?

Frombothsidesnow · 14/02/2018 17:43

I'm gender critical and deeply concerned about the ramifications of Self ID, and the current suppression of debate I see in the social media my teenager consumes, whereby any questioning is met with calls of TERF.

I also personally know several trans people, including my boss (MTF, with full surgery) and three other colleagues, all MTF, and the children of friends (all FTM).

So I don't think the theory of those who worry are those who don't know trans people holds water. Hell, some of those with the most vocal concerns on MN are trans themselves.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 14/02/2018 17:44

One in a caring profession who supported us enormously

And it was let slip by mistake to me
