how many transgender people do you know

Just that really. I've only met one at work a man who had the change to a woman.
From the number of threads recently it would appear that people are bumping into trans people everywhere they turn.

One tutor at university came back after the holidays as a woman. As this was in the 80s I'm assuming he/she was originally a gay, feminine-presenting man but he wasn't massively feminine looking after transition.
One who is a young person using a man's name but who is quite feminine in appearance and says they "don't have a gender". They are involved in childcare in a setting one of my DCs go to. Happily they seem to be somewhat gender critical too (Yes X boys can wear pink too).

I used to work with a trans woman, who is now in her 70s.

There's a young trans woman in a shop I use quite a lot, but I don't know them.

There's a middle aged trans woman who walks her dog somewhere I walk; we've chatted on dog related matters, but again, I don't know them.

I know a child who started to transition socially from boy to girl at 6.

Don't know any F to M.

It feels like, instead of saying men/women shouldn't be constrained into roles and stereotypes, it's more rigid - instead of being a woman who likes stereotypically male things, you are no longer a woman, you're a trans man.

Salene · 14/02/2018 16:59

1 friend has a 9 year old boy who is now a girl , changed name etc and being treated by hospital to see where they go with it

SimonBridges · 14/02/2018 17:00

I know a child who started to transition socially from boy to girl at 6

That is frightening. How is that happening other than parental pressure?
A boy of 6 not conforming to gender stereotypes? Surely they can’t have said ‘I want to be a girl’ and the parents actually act on it?
If so I would be a cat!

MissWimpyDimple · 14/02/2018 17:00

None. And I know a LOT of people and live in a progressive city famous for its tolerance.

I do know a small child who is F to M, but obv no surgery etc.

ratspeaker · 14/02/2018 17:01

I have honestly no idea.

There could be many , I dont seem to have conversations around gender and sexuality or what genitalia people were born with.
I only know of one person for definite , who I first met before starting hormone treatment

Bixg · 14/02/2018 17:01

I only know one. A male at work transitioning to female. She liked to tell the young female staff that she still had a "cock".

MissWimpyDimple · 14/02/2018 17:02

Sorry the child is M to F and started actually living as a girl with she was 7.

Wonder if it's the same person?

Def not through parental pressure but I guess it took a lot to actually go through with it

dantdmistedious · 14/02/2018 17:02

I know of one MTF but never met them.

LanguidLobster · 14/02/2018 17:03

One.

PaintingOwls · 14/02/2018 17:04

5 in real life, about 10 in total. 1 of those is female to male, 2 are female to non-binary.

MorningsEleven · 14/02/2018 17:05

I stopped counting at 30 and that's just friends, lots of trans acquaintances too.

Kazzyhoward · 14/02/2018 17:05

zen1 · 14/02/2018 17:05

One: TIM works in a local cafe (wears leggings and obviously hasn’t had surgery).

I don’t know them personally, but there is a young teen FtM at DC’s school.

LemonysSnicket · 14/02/2018 17:07

None although I know there’s a m-f at my company

Norugratsatall · 14/02/2018 17:07

One. School friend of DD2. FtoM. Lovely lad and a good friend to DD.

mogulfield · 14/02/2018 17:07

3, all male to female all armed forces. Age range 22-50.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 14/02/2018 17:07

Two very lovely trans women. I lost touch with one years ago, but the other has said she is against self ID but feels unable to speak openly about this due to the abuse by certain trans activists.

MetalMidget · 14/02/2018 17:08

Two Transwomen (both post-op, one was a colleague 20 years older than me who transitioned in the 90s, the other an old schoolfriend who transitioned a few years ago in her 30s), and one gender non-binary (born and presents as female though).

Yahdayah · 14/02/2018 17:10

Just the one, MTF. My father in law technically.

Two at work both M to F.

One fully transitioned including bottom surgery about 10 years ago. Very easy to be around, very happy in their new life. Has similar interests to their previous self (Man Utd, playing cricket). Doesn't endlessly talk about clothes/makeup/shoes to me. Took a very mundane name. Very hard to remember how they were before.

There is another relatively recent one. Wears lots of makeup, no longer talks about rugby. Has chosen a less mundane new name (think Jet or Scarlett), and has chosen to appear with enormous boobs. I feel less comfortable around them.
