how many transgender people do you know

Just that really. I've only met one at work a man who had the change to a woman.
From the number of threads recently it would appear that people are bumping into trans people everywhere they turn.

OP posts:

I have met 2. One MtF who was 40s and one FtM who was 13. I found that second a bit shocking tbh, surely 13 is too young to make decisions like that?

bertsdinner · 14/02/2018 18:59

None.
My sister works with one, has done for about 7 years. MtF.

RhodaBorrocks · 14/02/2018 19:02

Five or six.

Two/three MtF, one owns my DS's favourite shop so we go in often. The other I've met on protest marches when he was a man, but became Twitter and FB friends and I've watched him transition. His wife is still with him and very supportive.

Three FtM. One was a friend through our antenatal group as my DS is the same age as their eldest DC (their partner is the third MtF). Two I've known since my teens from a social group. Only one of me them has had any form of surgery (mastectomy), but the others are non binary presenting as male, using neutral and/or male pronouns.

They range in age from late 20s to late 30s.

I was also at uni with a MtF transwoman in the early 2000s when it was very unusual. She was great and a right laugh. I don't count her though as we list touch, although she popped up on a dovumentary i watched a few years ago.

juneybean · 14/02/2018 19:03

One mtf who I met at work.

itsbetterthanabox · 14/02/2018 19:04

2 that I know well both MTF.
3 more acquaintances.

Nagsnovalballs · 14/02/2018 19:06

7 Old Rugby teammate now ftm. At uni - Two students (Mtf) two students (ftm). Two colleagues.

MrGrumpy01 · 14/02/2018 19:06

A few. One older teen, just starting hormone treatment and some young children who think they are the opposite gender.

A diagnosis of asd is generally what they all have in common.

pandarific · 14/02/2018 19:07

Personally met two people who transitioned from female to male.

C0untDucku1a · 14/02/2018 19:08

One teen ftm

Fairenuff · 14/02/2018 19:11

OP are you going to engage with posters on your thread?

BishBoshBashBop · 14/02/2018 19:13

Lules · 14/02/2018 19:15

pourmeanotherglass · 14/02/2018 19:19

Dd knows 2, I know another, all teenage f to m.

WiseOldHag · 14/02/2018 19:21

Where are you OP?

Here's a cut & paste ...

Just looked on Twitter under #peaktrans.
It is actually insane.
Here's one tweet.
Can we not treat menstruation as an inherently female thing. What about trans ppl? Trans men forced to be in women's prisons that also suffer from the same issues. Menstruation is not a female issue.

Course it fucking is!! How the hell is it phobic to say that only biological women can menstruate?! It is a female issue.Because, yanno, WOMEN menstruate. Trans ones do not.
It's common bloody sense. I have a feeling today that the world has actually gone mad.

And this will be all condensed down to "Why are there so many transphobic threads on Mumsnet?" -

and "How many trans people do you know?" (aka - aren't some people really nasty..)

ohlalalala · 14/02/2018 19:28

Two that I know of
One male to female and one female to male

MmeGuillotine · 14/02/2018 19:29

Six. Which is pretty average for goth circles, probably. One of them was my ex mother in law before she took her own life though.

Fekko · 14/02/2018 19:30

Goths, really? I never knew that. I guess a always thought of them as a bit asexual.

MmeGuillotine · 14/02/2018 19:34

I really don't associate asexuality with the goth circles that I move in! They're mostly all polyamorous and VERY into sexual experimentation. I'm probably the most boringly vanilla in that I'm one of the very few monogamous people in my circle.

But yes, anyway, transexuality is pretty common in goth circles.

Fekko · 14/02/2018 19:35

Shows I know bugger all! I’ve only even chatted with goths when I’m out and about - I’ve found them generally a bit of a laugh!

Close friends, only 1. But another friend's husband is trans (though I'm not personally close to him as we live in different countries). But lots of trans co-workers. I work in a field where it's not at all unusal and actually cis heterosexual people like me are in the minority. But yeah, see a lot of nut jobs on here getting their panties in a bunch about something they know nothing about. More than likely most of us know or have met plenty of trans people though, we just don't know it. Not every trans woman is a drag queen. Most have normal boring jobs and normal lives and children just like all of us do.

Skarossinkplunger · 14/02/2018 19:36
  1. 2 M to F and 1 F To M.
Fairenuff · 14/02/2018 19:39

OP I did a quick tally of your thread.

Only got halfway through but these are the results so far:

OP: how many transgender people do you know

Replies:

20 posters stated that they knew no transgender people
84 poster stated that they knew transgender people

In response to 'how many' the total number was 191

So how can you say 'So in reality many of us don't know that many' when the results of your poll shows a completely different result?

FingersCrossedHard · 14/02/2018 19:39

Personally know - none.

I've met one transgender woman, a year or so ago who was an absolute arsehole. Point black refused to acknowledge that they had a previous name or admit they recognised their old signature when it was relevant and important (financial services lending contract signed pre-transition). Repeatedly said 'my name is Jane Thomas, I know no one named James Thomas' when asked if it was their signature as part of anti fraud checks on financial products. Real chip on the shoulder.
