AIBU to think Boris Johnson's latest initiative is just another exercise in words that mean nothing? What does stuff like 'hope not fear' actually mean?

I want to write to my MP (again) but I'm running out of ways to ask him to explain what the actual fuck any of it means. He just bats me back and says to read Hansard and that the PM is completely clear but I can't make head nor tail of what their plans are and how they then plan to get the EU to agree to them.

I genuinely now want to be reconciled (whatever that means) but AIBU to think there can't be any reconciliation because no-one will say anything other than what they want to happen with no explanation of what will happen in the real world.

I fucking hate this, the whole mess of it and the fact it's now being led by bloody hardline Tories who think repeating that we need 'get over it' is some kind of response to valid concerns. Get over what? What does any of it mean.

Well enjoy your misery. It's All Bad and will be forever.

Maddaddam · 14/02/2018 15:50

I'm never going to think Brexit is anything except a horrible thing, but would be personally reconciled, like one or two previous posters, if I could have European Citizenshop for me and my family. Unfortuately we don't have access to any other EU passports. I could live with a Brexit Britain if there were an escape route for those of us who want to stay European.

Would be about OK with a BINO (with free movement and single market membership), but then I'd use it to move somewhere and work towards full EU citizenship.

Helmetbymidnight · 14/02/2018 15:54

Yeah, we just have to think good things and it'll all be wonderful.

That's quality Leaver Reasoning.

Helmetbymidnight · 14/02/2018 15:55

I'd be better reconciled to leaving if leavers weren't full of trite shit.

NewYearNiki · 14/02/2018 16:20

It would be really good news if the Balkans can join the EU. They will have to change considerably first to meet EU standards of democracy and human rights. They will also be subject to the ECJ and accept the existence of their neighbours.
It will finally bring an end to the Balkan wars. Another great achievement of the EU.

And also result in more one way traffic here under FOM

no thanks

DGRossetti · 14/02/2018 16:38

libraries reopen.

won't ever happen. Not en masse.

mrsreynolds · 14/02/2018 16:38

Nope

Never

RESIST ✊

DGRossetti · 14/02/2018 17:11

How about if the national anthem became Jerusalem ? Should be a doddle, since the UK doesn't actually have a national anthem anyway.

specialsubject · 14/02/2018 17:22

And yes, off topic, I'm not geldof and I try very hard to eat with the seasons.

There are a few on this thread able to see both sides of the brexit issue and that there is no right answer . unfortunately drowned out, as in life, with the tarquin and cressida brigade and the take back control lot.

Cattenberg · 14/02/2018 18:12

Who are the Tarquin and Cressida brigade?

Unfinishedkitchen · 14/02/2018 18:18

Sorry I’m with NewYearNiki on the Balkans thing. The UK is not here to solve every other countries problems. I only care about the economic, employment rights, food standards and environmental hits we’re going to take on Brexit and that’s why I voted remain. Poverty will increase and the already have nots will have even less and the NHS will quickly be history.

However, I did not vote remain to encourage people from warring countries to come and live in the UK and continue their ethnic conflicts. We don’t need people who are deeply conservative on social issues, racist, anti-gay either. Let them stay at home.

mrsreynolds · 14/02/2018 18:28

I was just going to ask the same!...

Coz thick working class min wage earning lasses like me can't understand brexit, WTO, open skies and eurotom and it's wider global implications

Nor can I study history and see direct parallels between alt right neo fascists like trump, farage and bannon and the European govts of the 1930s and their hate filled rhetoric

Only posh people are remainers innit??

specialsubject · 15/02/2018 09:26

Tarquin and cressida are the gap yah kids who, like, won't be able to be chalet staff or sell drugs in magaluf because of brexit.

The equivalent of the thick racist brexiteer.

mrsreynolds · 15/02/2018 10:46

Yeah...
Coz brexit will really affect them wont it? 🤔
Just like farages, jrms and bojos kids..they will be insulated from the horrors awaiting us from March 2019
It's plebs like us and OUR kids who will suffer
I see on the news today they are advocating forced labour on the young on farms to get the crops in...
New Albion indeed

sinceyouask · 15/02/2018 10:50

To be honest, I don't think so. I didn't vote remain to piss leavers off, I voted remain because I genuinely believe the benefits far, far outweigh the costs of EU membership and that leaving will be very bad for the UK.

Helmetbymidnight · 15/02/2018 10:57

Tarquin and cressida are the gap yah kids who, like, won't be able to be chalet staff or sell drugs in magaluf because of brexit.

The equivalent of the thick racist brexiteer.

Yeah, yeah, because young people ARE exactly the equivalent of the thick racist brexiteers.

What crap.

mrsreynolds · 15/02/2018 11:05

Exactly sinceyouask

BarbarianMum · 15/02/2018 11:08

I think I could just about be reconciled to a soft Brexit although I'd not have voted for it. What will really reconcile me to it though is myself and my family getting dual nationality (in the process of applying) so we retain the right to live and work in the EU. That more than anything was important to me.

PaddyF0dder · 15/02/2018 11:10

I’m Irish. I have relatives living on both sides of the border. I vividly remember the troubles, which directly impacted on my family. My first cousins, who I was (and still an)close friends with, were held at gunpoint when they were less than 10 years old. At the age of 11 I was caught up in a bomb scare.

NOTHING will reconcile me with Brexit. Nothing. Brexit voters have exposed us to a return to the troubles. They have fecked with the few decades of peace we have, and utterly endangered the fundamentals of the Good Friday Agreement. They didn’t think, even for a second, of the impact of this on their closest neighbours. They didn’t care.

To hell with Brexit and to hell with those who ignorantly voted for it.

MinnieMousse · 15/02/2018 11:12

What would make me happy is a bit of speed. Rip the plaster off and let’s get in with it.

Good grief. This is why the referendum was such a stupid idea. Do some people really have no clue about the practicalities of leaving the EU??

I will never be reconciled to it. The worst thing of all is the thought that we can turn our backs on the institution that has brought us untold peace and prosperity over the past four decades because some people don't like foreigners. And however much people try to disguise that behind calls for "sovereignty", in the majority of cases it is a dislike of immigration that is behind this. My DM, who knows precisely 0 migrants from the EU, says that Brexit will be worth it if we reduce immigration even if her children and grandchildren are permanently worse off. Of course, there is in all likelihood going to be no decrease in immigration at all.

And in case people still don't realise, the EU legislates for Freedom of Movement for workers not for all. You have to be employed within a reasonable amount of time or self-supporting to have the right to stay. It is the UK government that has not enforced this legislation.

Tanith · 15/02/2018 11:27

Boris Johnson renouncing his dual American/British citizenship, putting his money where his mouth is and getting behind Britain.
The newspaper proprietors can do the same and become fully British citizens if they care so much about this country.

BarbarianMum · 15/02/2018 11:32

What would make me happy is a bit of speed.

Now that's an idea. I've always been a bit wary of Class A drugs though. Maybe gin instead?

wherewithal · 15/02/2018 14:24

Johnson renounced his US citizenship last year.

BWatchWatcher · 15/02/2018 19:11

He's still a liar.

honeysucklejasmine · 15/02/2018 19:15

I daresay his renouncing of US Citizenship was more to do with their Draconian expat citozens tax obligations, than a vote of confidence in the UK...
