To find this offensive? No whites allowed

I don't live an America, and I have no experience of racism in America, I somewhat understand the desire to have a "safe space" or a space to hold conversation around the issues, however the lady running it "eliminated all white people from her personal life" doesn't think white people should own passports etc

That's a lot of negativity for a "healing" retreat

The empowerment part... yeah, but the self segregation? Travelling backwards rather than forwards somewhat surely?!

I am white and don’t find having a ‘no whites allowed’ retreat racist or offensive. To me it’s the same as having female-only spaces - it allows a group space away from another group who tend to dominate them. In an ideal world these kind of spaces wouldn’t be necessary or appealing but sadly they are.

Otoh I think saying white people shouldn’t have passports is clearly batshit and also racist.

Laiste · 13/02/2018 10:01

The comparisons being made to this being a similar situation to a women setting up a women only space (and therefore ok) are only accurate if they acknowledge the fact that in this case the person running this space has eliminated all men from her life and thinks men should not be allowed passports.

First bit - fine.
Second part - OTT.
Conclusion - not a great philosophy, but not likely to actually make a lot of wider difference.

So the question is really - Should she be 'allowed' to set up a club with beliefs like that at it's heart? Is it going to cause damage?

BanyanTree · 13/02/2018 10:01

I have experienced racism as a white person on many occasions.

One of my lecturers overseas once said in front of a class of 30 people "I hate white people. There I said it. Its better to say it than keep it inside as a hypocrite". I was the only white in the class.

For 17 years I was called "And Moh", red haired monkey and Gwai Poh, white ghost.

Imagine if I called a person of colour this? I'd be in jail. But since I am white it's ok right? Because I am less entitled to feel shit than someone else.

BertrandRussell · 13/02/2018 10:09

“Racism is defined as the discrimination of one race by another”

No it isn’t. That’s prejudice. You need power in the equation for it to be racism..

NotASingleFuckToGive · 13/02/2018 10:11

Racism isn't just people of different races being nasty to each other. It must involve a power structure

Remember the disabled white boy in the USA who was tortured by 4 black teens live on Facebook last year? They kidnapped him for 48hrs, scalped him, made him drink from a toilet bowl, burned him with cigarettes, beat him, cut him with knives, all while shouting, "Fuck white people" and "Fuck Donald Trump". They made him repeat "Fuck white people..Fuck Donald Trump" on camera. When he was finally released two days later (bear in mind he has ASD and MH issues too) it took a whole day help him become calm enough to speak to police.

Yet, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi emphasized after the attack, that "the investigation has so far not revealed a racial or political motive".

One of the teens, Brittany Covington received 4 years PROBATION.

This must be the white privilege we hear so much about.

Valentinesfart · 13/02/2018 10:14

Oh no! There's a wellness retreat in a country I don't live in and will probably never go to that I can't visit!

Fucking hell that's worth worrying about. That's the racist issue I'm going to worry about today.

Valentinesfart · 13/02/2018 10:17

f they acknowledge the fact that in this case the person running this space has eliminated all men from her life and thinks men should not be allowed passports. Should she be 'allowed' to set up a club with beliefs like that at it's heart? Is it going to cause damage?

She can think whatever the fuck she likes because she doesn't have any power beyond her little "wellness retreat".

She won't take away male passports because the government is largely comprised of men. She is perfectly allowed to eliminate men from her life (as men are allowed to do so). So what.

You do get female feminist areas that don't allow men. Big fucking deal. A lot of women have really good reasons for never wanting to see another man. Not my issue.

PatriarchyPersonified · 13/02/2018 10:18

BertrandRussell

Not this again.

Prejudice + power is a stipulative definition of racism used in some contexts and is not intended (was never intended) to be used against an individual and to replace all other definitions of the word.

Your continual Orwellian attempts to redefine the word won't change that.

chipvinegar · 13/02/2018 10:18

@Valentinesfart no that's really not the debate is it.

Has any white person on here complained they can't go??

Beetlejizz · 13/02/2018 10:18

I'm white and not only do I not find this offensive but it's beyond me why any white person would care.

sallyandherarmy · 13/02/2018 10:19

I used to live in a far eastern country - WOW! The racism against European whites was disgusting.

I was spat at on a daily basis, groped because I was a 'white slut' (I was 15 at the time), got over looked in queues, repeatedly asked to join their sex trade because of my blonde hair.

At school I was ignored and made to sit on my own. I quickly learned the language without them realising. Oh that was delightful - not.

I did over hear one group of females saying that they had pissed in my drink of orange juice....so I tipped it over the main bully's head.

The suspension I received was a welcome relief.

Most of the coloured people of the world openly hate whites, but that is ok.

YassQueen · 13/02/2018 10:22

Sallyarmy

Muslims. Not "Moslems".

chipvinegar · 13/02/2018 10:22

Why do people care? It's a starting point for discussion regarding a topic most people care about... race relations

I could have started a debate using a different news story and another day likely would have, just happened to be current news I read yesterday Hmm

“Your continual Orwellian attempts to redefine the word won't change that“

Never posted it before, mate. You must have some other dead philosopher in mind.........

Anymajordude · 13/02/2018 10:25

Read this before you start worrying about a wellness retreat. Perspective is everything.

sallyandherarmy · 13/02/2018 10:25

Notasinglefuck

Kriss Donald comes to mind as well.

In the beginning of the investigation of his murder, it was attempted to cover up the fact it was 'racist'.

Mustn't upset them after all.

sallyandherarmy · 13/02/2018 10:27

yasqueen

I prefer to say and wite moslems

My choice.

scottishdiem · 13/02/2018 10:28

Its racist in the same way banning men from womens events is sexist.

BertrandRussell · 13/02/2018 10:28

“Dead white male philosopher” I meant.....

PatriarchyPersonified · 13/02/2018 10:30

BertrandRussell

Apologies, I got you confused with MrsTerryPratchett.

Point remains. Prejudice + Power is not a definition you can apply to an individual.

BertrandRussell · 13/02/2018 10:30

“I prefer to say and wite moslems”

Yeah, racists often do. Have you considered saying Mohammedans? Or Infidels?

RoseWhiteTips · 13/02/2018 10:32

Of course it’s racism. Racism doesn’t just go one way.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 13/02/2018 10:34

If black people want to self seggregate, that is their problem... I am sure it will not go wrong in any way at all.

And no real link, but I refuse to subscribe to the americanised newspeak. Fuck yeah black people, south asian, west asian, arab people can be and are racist. And when they are they are to face the same punition than white people. Stop making them eternal victims and learn about all the ways humans of ALL colors have been monstruous to each others.

scottishdiem · 13/02/2018 10:35

So many white people reacting exactly the same way as men do on MRA sites when women do the banning of men in their spaces thing. Or conferences for abused women as opposed to abused people (my ex used to hit me with her handbag... etc.).

sallyandherarmy · 13/02/2018 10:35

Bert

Yes I have. Been called an 'infidel' many times.

I also studied taqiyya
