www.google.co.uk/amp/www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/2018/02/12/wellness-retreat-in-costa-rica-that-bans-white-people-sparks-controversy.amp.html

I don't live an America, and I have no experience of racism in America, I somewhat understand the desire to have a "safe space" or a space to hold conversation around the issues, however the lady running it "eliminated all white people from her personal life" doesn't think white people should own passports etc

That's a lot of negativity for a "healing" retreat

The empowerment part... yeah, but the self segregation? Travelling backwards rather than forwards somewhat surely?!

Black women only receive racism from white women?

CherryMaDeary · 15/02/2018 17:54

I know what I wrote looks stupid. Just as stupid as saying all white people are bad. Neither is right to say. Would you like to expand on your reaction? Kind of hard to understand just one emoticon.

Why not say 'Not ALL white peoole are bad just like not ALL black people are bad'? Why mention stealing? There's your prejudice right there.

Or you could have said 'Not ALL black steal just like not ALL white people are pedophiles.'

CherryMaDeary · 15/02/2018 17:55

Fekko in the US, for the most part, yes.

Fekko · 15/02/2018 17:57

Hmmmm. I’m in the UK and hear crap from a whole rainbow nation.

ChipVinegar · 15/02/2018 18:02

How can black women have an honest discussion about the racism they face if there are white people there? It's not possible, they will feel inhibited and may even seek to appease the white people there.

@CherryMaDeary

That was kind of my point? The retreat itself IMO isn't a bad idea at all.

The part I object to is her promotion of segregation as a BETTER way for us all.

(segregation for a retreat is very different to eliminating all white people from your personal life, advocating they should have passports removed and telling white people no matter how nice you are, you shouldn't mix with us you've caused enough damage stay with your own kind... )

She sounds like she just doesn’t like white people/women.

CherryMaDeary · 15/02/2018 18:11

Chip, I think she was being facetious with the passports comment, she does laugh afterwards.

Fekko · 15/02/2018 18:14

Yes but you just couldn’t replace ‘white’ with, well anything and not get a arse kicking, so why would you?

CherryMaDeary · 15/02/2018 18:16

She sounds like she just doesn’t like white people/women.

But of an oversimplification.

Especially as racism is even worse in the US. She must have received a lot of crap to want to hide herself away.

CherryMaDeary · 15/02/2018 18:17

Not sure what you mean Fekko. Arse licking from who?

CherryMaDeary · 15/02/2018 18:18

Kicking not licking!

Fekko · 15/02/2018 18:18

Is she hiding away? My reading is that she is no shrinking violet.

CherryMaDeary · 15/02/2018 18:21

Well she has made it hard for white people to get to her, so I think she is.

And why should she be a shrinking violet?

itsmeimcathyivecomehome · 15/02/2018 18:21

.... In Costa Rica. Which does have a fairly high population of white people!

It's never ok to be "facetious" about something like that. Many a true word is spoken in jest and all that.

If I opened a nightclub and said, "no black men allowed in here, they've done enough with all the arse/giving head comments, in fact they should all just stay at home!" would that be facetious, based on my personal experiences, especially if I did a tinkly laugh at the end?

Or would I be a prejudiced racist who assumes all black men are the same? I think we know the answer to that, and it's the right answer too!

CherryMaDeary · 15/02/2018 18:25

itsme

Not really a valid comparison as arse/giving head comments are not endemic in society. You cannot compare that with history (slavery) and consequences of slavery which are still felt now (in education, criminal, employment spheres).

You are not discriminated against by society at large, it's.

Fekko · 15/02/2018 18:29

No saying she should be a shrinking violent - someone else said that she was ‘hiding away’ and it doesn’t sound like she is retreating in that sense of the word.

And arse kicking not licking! If she said ‘no Asians, no native americans, no disabled, no people over 50...’ there would be complaints.

CherryMaDeary · 15/02/2018 18:30

its most CRs are Spanish white and have a very multiethnic society.

itsmeimcathyivecomehome · 15/02/2018 18:53

I see cherry. Your argument is basically two wrongs make a right, not let's try to fix the wrongs. Got it!

CherryMaDeary · 15/02/2018 18:54

Well, she has said it's run by black people for black people, so it's quite clear who it's for.

She doesn't say it's run by black people for black, asian and native american people.

Fekko · 15/02/2018 18:56

Often ‘black’ means not white (DH is often bemused about this).

CherryMaDeary · 15/02/2018 18:56

I see cherry. Your argument is basically two wrongs make a right, not let's try to fix the wrongs. Got it!

Where have I argued that?

And how do you want to fix things? By telling black people they can't have this soace?

ChipVinegar · 15/02/2018 19:11

Personally I think black people having this space IS FINE starting to wonder how I can make myself any clearer Confused

I think the promotion of segregation as a solution to racism being the way forward and her personal comments regarding white people (regardless of how good a white person is trying to be in life) NOT OK

I also think if people are going to her for healing then they are vulnerable (hurt people are vulnerable people) and if she's pushing her segregation ideas on vulnerable, hurting people she's in a dangerous position to convince them she does have the solution "eliminate ALL white people from your personal life and it will be breezy"

OP posts:
itsmeimcathyivecomehome · 15/02/2018 19:45

Literally not one post has said that the retreat is a bad idea.

The comments by the proprietor making it more about excluding white people than about resting or soothing or healing for black people are, however.

She's also going to CR and telling a % of that country's population that they can't go to her retreat. She's not saying only white Americans can't go. It might make some Costa Ricans wish she'd stayed at home herself!

QuackPorridgeBacon · 15/02/2018 21:15

CherryMaDeary I was deliberately using a steroetype. I dontthink that, but it’s a well known one.
