www.google.co.uk/amp/www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/2018/02/12/wellness-retreat-in-costa-rica-that-bans-white-people-sparks-controversy.amp.html

I don't live an America, and I have no experience of racism in America, I somewhat understand the desire to have a "safe space" or a space to hold conversation around the issues, however the lady running it "eliminated all white people from her personal life" doesn't think white people should own passports etc

That's a lot of negativity for a "healing" retreat

The empowerment part... yeah, but the self segregation? Travelling backwards rather than forwards somewhat surely?!

PancakeInMaBelly · 13/02/2018 17:14

Kinda pisses on the sentiment that its uber elightening and enriching for other countries when theyre visited by white westerners when white westerners find that they dont enjoy it much when the movement of people works in the other direction....

Thats some good that movement of POC has done!

floriad · 13/02/2018 17:17

Super

Racist comments tap into something that happens in wider society. It's not personal.

I'm fairly certain that they're often very personal. But fair enough.

Floriad I was one of the first posters on this thread, and shared my belief that prejudice from a person of colour towards a white person is not racism. It's prejudice, yes, and it could hurt.

It does and has hurt. everyone.

it leads to segregation. Which leads to more prejudice / racism.

Saying that it isn't racist is imo not just incorrect but actively harmful.

Because it makes it seem (imo) like "prejudice" is inherently and always less dangerous than racism (even if the racist person is a homeless white woman).

When prejudice like that actually harms our society. And therefore should be vehemently argued against.

CherryMaDeary · 13/02/2018 17:21

I think it's sad that a black woman has to be so controversial to be heard.

No one seriously thinks she wants to ban white people from travelling. It's exaggerated satire, IMO.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 13/02/2018 17:26

Please let me know your opinion on the essay I posted, floriad.

I have no personal experience of feeling hurt due to prejudiced comments against me as a white person.

Everyone I know who is Black or from an ethnic minority has experienced negative comments, and most have struggled to get jobs.

I think segregation is a word with multiple meanings. People who experience a common oppression getting together for a weekend is not going to demolish Western society as we know it.

PancakeInMaBelly · 13/02/2018 17:26

"No one seriously thinks she wants to ban white people from travelling. It's exaggerated satire, IMO."

Im not about to hand in my passport, but it HAS got me thinking about how much shit white global movement has brought to the world...

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 13/02/2018 17:28

Even if she genuinely did believe it would benefit society, what power does she have to institute such a move?

PancakeInMaBelly · 13/02/2018 17:29

The overriding good of Chinese tourism? Japanese tourism? The overriding good of any kind of tourism?

Tourism can be destructive. Or in a few cases positive.

Whether it's a pink, blue or orange person sitting in their 5 star resort...

Is that basically your way of saying that no, you also cant argue that white peoples disproportionate freedom of movement has brought overall good to the world?

Me neither.

Aeroflotgirl · 13/02/2018 17:31

Cherry, that's the same as saying that about a racist white person, oh he dident mean it, just him. It's unacceptable to publically have comments like this whether it's from a white or black person. So you probably think tge commentator from black life's matter, regargarding white bitches and being attacked not raped because they are from the oppressive race., is OK. He's just harmless and has to be controversial to be heard. Do yiu know how awful that sounds!

floriad · 13/02/2018 17:34

Is that my way of saying that I also cant argue that white peoples freedom of movement has brought overall good to the world?

This is my way of saying that I couldn't say that about any race / ethnicity.

I would however say that the mixing and mingling of cultures and people has been beneficial in general. Would you disagree?

PancakeInMaBelly · 13/02/2018 17:34

Its equivalent to me saying:

You know what, lets have WOMEN rule the world for a while! Men have been cocking it up for long enough!

Its a fair and interesting discussion point. So is suggesting white people limit their travel/movement for a bit and let others see if they can improve things without us!

floriad · 13/02/2018 17:36

Even if she genuinely did believe it would benefit society, what power does she have to institute such a move?

What power does a homeless, racist white woman have to actually institute a "such a move"? (like no passports for black people...?)

Her racism would still be unacceptable imo.

PancakeInMaBelly · 13/02/2018 17:37

I would however say that the mixing and mingling of cultures and people has been beneficial in general. Would you disagree?

Yes. Actually. I dont think that white tourists have "broadened their minds" HALF as much as the average white backpacker claims they have on their travels.

ChainVaper · 13/02/2018 17:37

It would be much easier to not feel slightly uneasy about this if the founder hadn’t made her feelings about white people so clear. I can totally understand that in some places there would be a need for a safe space for certain groups of people who are going through the same struggles and problems but the approach to this has come from a person who has views which are hateful and radical. My family and I enjoy our life here in London and it is truly enriched by us living in a multi cultural society and the acceptance by the majority that we are all just people living our lives together- not labelled or separated by colour. Safe spaces for marginalised groups are a necessity but segregation and discrimination against any race or religion are not

Aeroflotgirl · 13/02/2018 17:39

Why should anyone limit their travel unless there is very good reason to.

floriad · 13/02/2018 17:41

You asked:

Is that my way of saying that I also cant argue that white peoples freedom of movement has brought overall good to the world?

Freedom of movement. Not just tourism or backpacking.

I would however say that the mixing and mingling of cultures and people has been beneficial in general. Would you disagree?

Rebeccaslicker · 13/02/2018 17:41

Pancake - how has what you proposed worked out for zimbabwe? Do you think black people there have enjoyed the fruits of mugabe's labours to remove all white people? Apart from those directly connected to Mugabe, of course.

PancakeInMaBelly · 13/02/2018 17:41

In many cases floriad travel does the opposite, and brings out the inner "white saviour" or poverty rubbernecker

There are extreme weather programs on bbc at the mo. White students talking about how THEY felt about watching locals homes destroyed Hmm and how its helped them grow as people because when theyre back home in their safe houses, they wont "sweat the small stuff", because theyll remember the flattened village and think "could be worse"

YACK!

PatriarchyPersonified · 13/02/2018 17:41

PancakeInMaBelly

Ive just re-read your previous posts on here and the amount of apologising and minimising you are doing is unbelievable.

If you don't accept that saying white people should all live separate from other races and have their passports taken off them is racist, then I have to ask, is there anything she could have said that you would accept is racist towards white people?

PancakeInMaBelly · 13/02/2018 17:43

Rebeccaslicker there are whole chains of events preceeding that which cannot be separated from the way in which white people used the privilidge they had in the past of moving to Africa.

Aeroflotgirl · 13/02/2018 17:46

This thread has taken a very nasty and unpleasent direction from some, it's shocking really. It's from white people who seem to hate their own.

Rebeccaslicker · 13/02/2018 17:47

But you can't undo that. You can discuss the reasons and how it shouldn't have happened until you're blue in the face. You wouldn't be wrong, but you couldn't change it.

So. Answer the question - did most black Zimbabweans benefit when Mugabe decided to remove white people, which is basically what you're suggesting would be a good idea? And if so, how?

PancakeInMaBelly · 13/02/2018 17:47

then I have to ask, is there anything she could have said that you would accept is racist towards white people?

Yup.
Gain a disproportionate amount of power over white people. Then use that power to disadvantage white people.

Shes nowhere close.

No since you desperately wanted to move past the actual retreat: white international movement has brought the following good to the world....................

PancakeInMaBelly · 13/02/2018 17:48

So. Answer the question - did most black Zimbabweans benefit when Mugabe decided to remove white people, which is basically what you're suggesting would be a good idea
I didnt suggest that. Not once.

floriad · 13/02/2018 17:49

This woman is

  1. Against white people having passports (which is not just tourism or freedom of movement btw)
  2. For segregation

This makes me feel uneasy about this resort. When I usually would not be.

She clearly wants white people to separate themselves from black people (segrate themselves away).
which is why one could have the unfortunate... thought that this retreat was part of this pro segregation mindset and intended to encourage division and therefore also segregation beween black and white people. That this retreat isn't just about having a safe space.

And segregation / division tends to encourage racism and prejudice.

confusednotcom2 · 13/02/2018 17:50

I’m white but my parents are immigrants. All other family still lives abroad. Am I allowed a passport to visit them?
