Kids names...

To wonder why people care so much about other people's lives...?

My kids have unusual names and I get constant remarks and it has begun to piss me off my standard reply now is It's not of anyone else's business and it's so rude.

Perhaps we should all care more about important issues and less about other people's names!

And Jaxon instead of Jackson Hmm Just why? That's right up there with Mercedes and Armani. People shouldn't but they so do judge.

PatheticNamechange · 12/02/2018 21:52

Someone had sent a form into my workplace the other day. Her name was 'Jennerffer'.

Now those parents were absolute wankers.

peachypetite · 12/02/2018 22:01

Jaxon is awful!!

T1M2N3T4 · 12/02/2018 22:06

I know of an esme but pronounced es-me instead of es-may and the mother is always furious when people say it wrong. Also know a lot of girls with May,Mae,Mai shoved on the end and it makes it hard to remember correct spellings

cardibach · 12/02/2018 22:07

What’s wrong with Mercedes? Not my choice, but a proper name.
Why have you name changed OP?

TheHungryDonkey · 12/02/2018 22:18

I knew an 80 year old woman called Esme pronounced Es-me.

I think Elizabella is actually quite nice. I don’t understand why people get so sneery about names. It’s a horrid bullying attitude.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 12/02/2018 22:36

I was agreeing with all the PPs, until the OP put her DD's name down.

I think Elizabella is gorgeous. I expect that people are confusing it with Isabella, but it's a lovely name.

So, no, OP. I don't think you are BU.

This thread has rather brought out the SPAG pedants. I'm often one myself (although not one who corrects others on the internet), but I'm won over by your DDs name.

I hope she loves it as she gets older.

ohlalalala · 12/02/2018 22:53

People are so weird about names.
Personally I don't like some of these modern, American inspired names.
I also don't really like modern 'hippy' names. But that's me... I'm not naming your kids and you aren't naming mine!
My kids are named very plain names. Think along the lines of John, Lisa and Michael.
I absolutely love Irish names. I'm in the north of Ireland and the problem here is for some, Irish names are viewed as politically charged.
I've got an Irish name and I know as soon as I introduce myself the other person knows what side of the community I come from.
As fucked up as it sounds that's how things are here! Hence why I avoided Irish names for my dc.
Names are so important... a big responsibility on us as parents to get it right!!!

Muddlingalongalone · 12/02/2018 23:12

ohlalalala despite my mum being half Irish, as an English southerner I'd never come across the Irish names thing until I lived abroad with 3 Irish girls. Fascinating - and something I automatically think about when I meet someone Irish people now despite not caring which "side" they're on.

OP - It's pretty & unusual but I would genuinely wonder if I'd misheard you and you actually Elizabeth or Isabella. Names are incredibly personal and subjective - as long as you like it, own it.

MikeUniformMike · 12/02/2018 23:22

The Spanish form of Elizabeth is Isabel not Isabella.
Isabella is Italian and Portuguese I think.

MikeUniformMike · 12/02/2018 23:25

La Reina Isabel is what the Queen is called in Spain.
Her eldest son is Principe Carlos.

Marcipex · 12/02/2018 23:39

I've got a 90 year old book about a girl called Elisabella. By EM Oxenham.

SleepingStandingUp · 12/02/2018 23:56

I love Elisabella, the softer sound in the middle

Readytomakechanges · 13/02/2018 00:23

So, it's pronounced just like Isabella with an 'El' at the front?

I think it sounds pretty, although if I saw it written down I'd have said El-eye-za-bella.

I've never met anyone in real life who comments negatively about a childs name to their parents as it's poor manners. Have known quite a few to comment behind the parents back

ohlalalala · 13/02/2018 00:31

@Muddlingalongalone it's crazy! I love names like seorise, Niamh, aoibheen etc but in this messed up 6 county state we live in they would just get labelled and judged.
I wish to god this could all just be sorted and done away with!

SuperBeagle · 13/02/2018 00:44

Isabella is Italian and Portuguese I think.

There's a Portuguese Izabela in my maternal ancestry. Not sure if that's the typical spelling.

Either way, Elizabella is a made up name. As an Elizabeth, I don't envy any child with a 5 syllable name.

ToddlerIs2 · 13/02/2018 00:47

Readytomakechanges plenty of people before he was born told me how awful it was, how he would be bullied etc.

LinoleumBlownapart · 13/02/2018 01:17

Isabel and Izabel are both Portuguese, as in the Brazilian Princess Isabel the redeptress. And brazilian model Izabel Goulart. Isabela or sometimes Isabella is common now, think they're Italian or from the French Isabelle. Elizabella is a nice name, not out there at all. Not sure why people would comment.

emmyrose2000 · 13/02/2018 01:34

Anyone who gives their child a normal name with a "younique" (ie. incorrect) spelling can't complain when people judge them negatively for it.

If you like the name 'Kate', don't spell it as 'Ceight' just to be "different". It just looks stupid and sets your poor child up for a lifetime of annoyance and problems.

I read of one mother who was considering calling her unborn DD Miichael. Firstly, why give your daughter a boys name, and secondly, why then add in an extra 'i'? it just looks like a typo, and will pretty much ensure her daughter ends up as Michael and on the boys list for things.

I have a cousin who called her oldest son Jaxon and people always spell that wrong
It's your cousin who has spelt it wrong. The correct spelling is Jackson.

RainbowGlitterFairy · 13/02/2018 02:04

I like Elizabella, but as someone with a similarly unusual name, I think she'll get sick of correcting people, I've pretty much given up.

WilyMinx · 13/02/2018 05:12

I like Elizabella! But I would've pronounced it as E-lie-za-bella if I didn't know.
I gave my son an unusual name too. It isn't misspelled but very uncommon and I suppose some people would say it's not even a name.

FlipOff · 13/02/2018 07:44

Cardibach - whoops, thanks for pointing that out, haha! Name changed for another thread and then forgot the capitals! 🙈 #Fail lol.

Why do people hate Jaxon? it's getting to be a fairly common name I think.

Readytomakechanges - yes that's how it's pronounced - issabella with EL at the start.

OP posts:
FlipOff · 13/02/2018 07:50

I think Jackson is a surname - Jaxon is a good compromise for a first name.
My cousin said they've even had a person ask 'no, what's his first name' when they've said it.

And I have to say I don't think there's any 'right way' to spell a name - names can be absolutely anything.

OP posts:
Cuppaoftea · 13/02/2018 07:51

I've also heard of Elisabetta as an Italian variation (though I don’t know why you'd use it over here instead of Elizabeth unless you had Italian heritage).

Our niece is called Isabel (Izzy) so we didn't want that or Isabella as it's just too close.

Elisabella is just as close as Isabella really.

We love her name. (Her nickname at home is Eliza - E-lie-za. Even though that's not how we say it in her name)

I'd seriously consider giving 'Eliza' as her known as name when she starts school then.

Your DD won't have people constantly questioning her about her name or calling her Isabella anyway, Eliza is shorter for her to be constantly writing out and less of a mouthful for the teachers.
