Romeo? 🤔

(TBH, Apple is just as bad...)

But, seriously, celebrity names are stupid!

brooklyn means broken land(dutch)
chicago is a stylized version of an indian word that means smelly onioms

CookieWarbler · 13/02/2018 21:34

My DD was recently in hospital for a couple of nights and both ends of the questionable name spectrum were in evidence. From one little boy called Kenneth to another called Keean-Dakota and not a first name / middle name combo but hyphenated as a complete first name - poor kid!

JuliannaBixby · 13/02/2018 21:35

I had to interview someone named Peanut. I found it very difficult to say it and not look awkward.

There was a fascinating thread on here a while back about French names. If I could have got away with calling DD Sixtine I totally would have.

Petalflowers · 13/02/2018 21:36

I named my child a top ten name. I didn’t consult any lists prior to naming him, but opted for a classic, traditional name. Including dc, there were three With his name in the class. Fortunately, it’s a name with lots of nn. Eg. Fredrick - Fred, Freddy, Rick

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 13/02/2018 21:38

North West has to be the worst one. Either they were high, or they didn't think it through.

Viviennemary · 13/02/2018 21:40

I don't think it's that bad though I probably wouldn't choose it myself. Still I suppose I might if I was a third rate popstar or a fourth rate designer.

ivegotdreadfulpmttoday · 13/02/2018 21:42

Mercedes Benz is named after the daughter of one of the people who worked closely with Benz and Daimler.

Tapandgo · 13/02/2018 21:44

What’s wrong with Kenny (Kenneth)?

dontbesillyhenry · 13/02/2018 21:54

I always wanted to call any daughter of mine Amneris. However I happened to marry someone with the most common English surname you can get so it just wasn't happening

Meandmy4 · 13/02/2018 21:56

I know of a Romeo ... only a couple of a weeks old and hes is just the cutest little thing ever ! (Mum at my ds school ) ...but personally not for me but as pp said i associate Romeo with womanising 😬

im pretty sure Nicola McClean named her son Striker Confused ...why oh why ?!Confused

AlbertaSimmons · 13/02/2018 21:57

Some of the names being touted on here as barely usable or out there aren’t all that strange Hmm. My DC were at school/ nursery/ mates with or we have friends with DC named, inter alia, Demetrius, Adonis, Mars, Lysander, Jonty, Hector, Mercedes, Brooklyn, Adeline, Adelaide, Douglas, Gordon - all of which people on MN have gawped at on this and other threads.

Friend’s young adult daughter has just legally changed her name because she hated it. She’s now Sophie. Her given name was Catherine Confused. A name isn’t necessarily for life, as any woman who becomes a Mrs knows full well.

AudTheDeepMinded · 13/02/2018 22:03

I think a lot of unusually named children grow into their names and after a while they don't seem strange at all. I know a Romeo and it seems perfectly normal now as I am used to it. I did meet a baby Zeus last year and can't quite get my head round that one!

tillytrotter1 · 13/02/2018 22:03

I used to dislike teaching Jesus, pronounced HaZeus though.

Meandmy4 · 13/02/2018 22:06

really ? An actual first name as Optimus Prime ?
my dcs have actually asked me to change their names to optimus and bumble bee ... but that was of course after spending months pleading for me to change their names to:
hulk, woody, buzz, spidey and at one pount im sure one of them threw in a T-Rex ..... but an actual Optimus prime ?

MrsMaisel · 13/02/2018 22:12

Stormi just makes me think of Stormy Daniels. Hmm

GertNBert · 13/02/2018 22:55

I like Lysander and Leander. Leollan is nice too (sp?)

I hope everyone with a child called Leander has got themselves a copy of one of my children's and my favourite book 'The Bears' Famous Invasion of Sicily' by Dino Buzzatti. It's features King Leander who is a bear. It was written in 1945.

Springprim · 13/02/2018 23:15

Romeo is a lovely name. As is Apple.

OMGafourth · 13/02/2018 23:21

I always liked Dorian myself (Oscar Wilde fan)... Hubby didn't go for it.

MissingDietCoke · 13/02/2018 23:27

I've got a 2 year old Leonard. Elderly lady in the post office delighted in that today, which happens quite regularly. Seems it always reminds that generation of someone. In our case it's an old family name in DHs family. Our DCs are both called names that mean something to us, as well as being named that we 'just liked' iyswim.

Estellanpip · 13/02/2018 23:32

A lot of the names here aren't very unusual, especially when you take into consideration they might even be considered run of the mill in certain cultures/countries.
Jesus is a very common name. It's no different to a Brit being called Chris or Christian.

Ladydepp · 13/02/2018 23:35

I love unusual names and top 10 names too. I grew up with sisters called Destiny and Sky. I was well jealous!

The mountain climber Kenton Cool married a woman called Jazz, so she’s Jazz Cool, which is the best name EVER! Grin

lilabet2 · 13/02/2018 23:46

Blame Florence Nightingale's parents for the whole Brooklyn, Paris thing :-P

DinosaurFarmer · 13/02/2018 23:50

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet but equal to the travesty of Pilot Inspektor is Audio Science, the son of actress Shannyn Sossamon. Why would you do this to a child? Confused

FizzyGreenWater · 14/02/2018 00:26

The best thing about this thread is having it on 'Threads I'm On' on your mobile, so it shows the thread title then the name of the last poster immediately below that. So I was just greeted by 'After all these years, to still wonder why you'd call your child...Dinosaur Farmer'

😆

pinkstripeycat · 14/02/2018 07:31

I came across a child called Rugby......also have heard of a Bay and Bow (not Beau) who are brothers
