Does mumsnet ever ban or sanction persistent troll hunters

Just that really
I have noticed on some threads even when HQ comes in and says they have checked out the person and they are not a troll posters on here still pile in with troll accusations.
The procedure is to report and then let HQ decide, I have been accused of being a troll a few times and it can really hurt so I dread to think how someone who has really got up the courage the post about things.
Why can’t people just report if they have suspicions and leave it to HQ rather then have a go at the Op who is more then likely genuine.

Any chance whist this is being done yet again of getting the hysterical criers of troll hunters reined in too?

I do tend to object to have someone hysterically fingerpointing at me and calling me a troll hunter when I openly state I think an op has name changed purely because they intended their thread to be unpleasant and goady when it didn’t need to be. Lo and behold I was right. I wasn’t troll hunting and was pointing out the op was getting a hard time for being needlessly inflammatory. And as a result have someone imply I was prolific and consistently troll hunter based on one thread and one post. It is getting ridiculous in here thanks to all the self appointed thread police making up what you can and can’t say as they go along. I’ve read the guidelines, I know know the rules, I post within them ergo fuck off ye bandwagoners.

Cornettoninja · 11/02/2018 08:37

I'm hoping one day Mnhq will just ban these threads

Oooorrrrr you could just use the hide function or good old fashioned ignoring?

I think blogging is duller than the shipping forecast but I don't troll that section posting patronising emoticons and telling them all I hope their conversations are banned...

KayaG · 11/02/2018 08:43

Troll hunters are only annoying when they post on threads. If people want to report suspicious posts then do so and bugger off and leave it to HQ.

That's what sensible people do, surely.

Coconutspongexo · 11/02/2018 08:46

Kaya well no because lots of them happen at night especially the Pervy ones and some
Posters seem to have no common sense and are quite happy to tell strangers on the internet about their child’s periods/underwear/toilet habits.

Not to mention the creep that kept accusing a toddler of masturbating in great detail and people were happy to talk about children touching themselves so no sometimes people do need to say THIS IS A TROLL.

The trolls seem to know that MNHQ only have night staff on with limited powers after a certain time

C8H10N4O2 · 11/02/2018 08:52

Op dispite HQ saying they were not a troll

Can we please stop propagating this lie? Or point me at some examples of HQ doing exactly this?

What I have generally seen is HQ saying they don't have evidence, based on the tools/info around IP addresses/past posts to be sure its a new troll/scammer. Occasionally they will add that the poster has a long posting history - quite often these posters don't. There is little else they can do on a site which aims to give the benefit of the doubt.

That is NOT HQ saying that the poster has been verified. HQ can't verify any of us are truly what we say we are.

Its very misleading to keep misrepresenting HQ as having verified dubious posters and fantasists. Its how people get scammed.

However since the site seems determined to turn itself into the DM comments column lately perhaps it no longer matters who is a troll and who gets scammed.

paxillin · 11/02/2018 08:54

There’s a definite army of self-appointed MN Stasi who seem to be unable to grasp that they aren’t valiantly saving the world from pervs and con artists one keystroke at a time

GrinGrinGrin Meanwhile, the equally self-appointed MN KGB are busy saving mumsnet by pointing to the talk guidelines and trying to enforce their interpretation of them.

KayaG · 11/02/2018 09:05

But, Dipping, you aren't the MN police. The nightwatch hide dubious threads until the morning.

It's upsetting to see posters in distress being accused of being trolls when it's apparent that they aren't. People should wait to see how a thread develops before jumping in crying "Troll!" Often it becomes clear they aren't from future posts but by then the damage may have been done and those in need of support are made to feel worse.

MN make the rules and should enforce them with a few bans imo.

Coconutspongexo · 11/02/2018 09:36

I didn’t say I was the MN police did I? They take forever to hide threads and idiot posters give them what they want.

We’re talking about completely different threads and if you think the Pervy threads shouldn’t have people saying then I find that weird.

Coconutspongexo · 11/02/2018 09:36

They’re not rules they’re guidelines btw

C8's equally tedious and repetitive defensive responses

So you think its perfectly ok to misrepresent HQ and say they have verified a poster? I'm assuming that is what you are talking about as I've only made one post.

The threads are still standing from previous talks about troll hunters Janey.

you’re trying to police what people post on Now? Strange.

paxillin · 11/02/2018 09:57

I'm not a caped crusader, @JaneyEJones. I'm a mnetter whilst here, same as you. You presumably spend time elsewhere on the internet. It doesn't make you a facebooker or whatever it is you enjoy. It is utterly irrelevant. We are here and this thread is a weekly gig, often deleted.

paxillin · 11/02/2018 09:58

Actually, what does Why not let them discuss mean? I'm "them", too, so are you.

Am I the only one that is finding this thread hard to follow?
Having gone over to Reddit I can see the place for discussion on wee and period trolls who are probably horrible pervs, but a lot of it is just bitchiness about probable legitimate posters who happen to be a bit preachy or attention seeking.

KayaG · 11/02/2018 10:13

We’re talking about completely different threads and if you think the Pervy threads shouldn’t have people saying then I find that weird.

You can ask the poster why they want to know if you think it's a pervy thread. It is legitimate for mothers of young daughters to ask on here if they are having menstrual issues, surely.

Don't call my opinions weird, it's rude and unnecessary and a bit pathetic. What's weird is seeing perv where there is none.

Coconutspongexo · 11/02/2018 10:17

Kaya funny is it that every thread that people have called troll on linking to periods, masturbation, toilets and underwear have been deleted by MNHQ the next day due to op ‘not being on the so level’ etc.

So no it’s not seeing a perv where there isn’t one.

Coconutspongexo · 11/02/2018 10:18

Funny isn’t it*

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 11/02/2018 10:28

*OP, if you have been "accused" of being a troll, are you honestly surprised by that? Do you really not have a clue as to what comments or threads you're posting that might lead someone to say you are a troll?

We all have to take personal accountability for what we post on here or anywhere else on tinternet, you know. So maybe it's time to be honest with yourself and change your posting style if you do care and really don't intend to cause offence*
The main one were I was called a troll wad I posted about something that had happened to me and most of the posters said it was awful and gave me some great advice, then about five posters said things like “if this is real which I doubt” then someone would reply “yep I agree it’s doubtful” etc etc
I did not offend anyone I just posted the facts.

keralanau · 11/02/2018 10:35

Anyone who does any troll hunting on there gets down voted so that their posts disappear.

Don’t be silly Grin Trollhunting isn’t downvoted, most of the threads are troll hunting and flagging up suspicious posters and posts. You obviously don’t know much at all.

Targeting and harassment of individuals (literally hundreds of posts about one poster, endless speculation and searching for her, including exif data from an old photo here for location), who they don’t know for certain to be fantasists, is also breaking Reddit rules.

All the pervert trolls, some Mumsnet posters here are quite capable of spotting and reporting themselves, mntrolls are not doing Mumsnet a service (most of them hate the place so why would they) it’s just used as an excuse to bitch about whoever they please. A lot of them admit the posters bitched about and followed over here aren’t even trolls.

The poster who has been identified as teacher fantasist troll is not only -bitched about- discussed but some of the people start posting behind her on the threads she’s on with snide and nasty comments. That’s just not fair.

They have their own trolls over there anyway and ironically some paranoia about a secret group supposedly set up to discuss them. Grin Sounds like rubbish to me but adds to the drama over there!

Paxillin is one of the few decent Redditors, and popular enough to speak their mind against some of the less savoury goings on over there without being massively downvoted and having their posts hidden, as I’ve seen happen to others.
