I have autism and the sensory issues that go with it. Certain foods, textures and smells definitely make me gag. If I ate raw tomatoes, coleslaw and Parmesan I certainly would, or worse.

The worst was when I walked into a cheese shop to buy bread, jam and chutneys. I barely lasted ten seconds. The smell was so overpowering. I came so close to losing my lunch.

I don't think it's that uncommon to have that response to certain very strong odours even if you don't have autism, judging by the videos of people reacting to tins of the fermented fish. I can't recall the name of it at the moment.

Teufelsrad · 10/02/2018 10:36

surströmming. That's what I was thinking of.

I have to add puddings containing alcohol to my list. I hate alcohol but at least wine leaves a very pleasant flavour when cooked into something like bolognese. Puddings with alcohol in them just taste or burning and death.

Duchessgummybuns · 10/02/2018 10:59

Anything aniseed is a no go for me. Pernod 🤢

Cherries too for some reason, can’t abide fresh ones, cherry drinks, but cherry flavoured sour Haribo I love! I’m weird.

Octopus/squid. Tried a few times and while the flavour isn’t unpleasant it feels like a lot of chewing with no payoff.

Owlish · 10/02/2018 11:01

Lamb. It stinks and tastes of rancid fat 🤢

AtleastitsnotMonday · 10/02/2018 13:04

Ribs, surely they are just bones. I’m not a dog, I really don’t see the attraction of gnawing on a bone!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 10/02/2018 13:39

I'll eat just about anything, love most of the hated foods on here but cannot eat porridge, I don't mind the taste or texture but I think I must have unusually strong digestive enzymes in my saliva because as soon as I return my spoon to the bowl from my mouth a couple of times the whole thing breaks down into some vile slime. The first time I showed DH he was horrified. The same thing happens with hummus, which is why I never, ever, double dip.

Oh and green apples. Can't even look at those buggers without having quite a physically strong reaction involving nausea and excessive salvation!

Sparklingbrook · 10/02/2018 13:43

I am so glad I am not the only one that hates lamb. It looks and smells horrible, and then people cover it in mint sauce which improves nothing.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 10/02/2018 13:54

A lot of vegan haterzzzz

I am a semi vegan but NOT smug and not preachy . I do however find the hatred fascinating

Anyway sorry - derail

Are the really really fussy ones mega slim? You surely have to be!!

Weezol · 10/02/2018 14:03

I remember hearing something on the radio a few years ago about brussels sprouts and the leafy green veg I mentioned upthread.

Apparently about half of humans still have a sensitivity to one of the enzymes in these, which is what makes us gyp, pick up metallic or rubbery tastes when eating them.

It goes back to pre-history and was part of our ability to detect and reject poisonous fruits and leaves by taste.

I'm quite surprised by the length of some of the lists on here though. I thought I was fussy with my veg/texture things but it seems not so much.

TealStar · 10/02/2018 14:06

Most fish and seafood (not all), and goat’s cheese. I so wish I liked those things as it would make life so much easier but they make me want to dry retch.

I do however love blue cheese, pickled onions and Marmite 😋

Noodles are just salt in a packet or pot. People love them.

TorchesTorches · 10/02/2018 14:13

Tofu. Just writing it makes me feel nauseous.

redexpat · 10/02/2018 14:13

Chocolate orange. Chocolate? Delicious. Orange? Delicious? The 2 combined? Awful. I hate jaffa cakes.

spankhurst · 10/02/2018 14:13

Love blue cheese, but snails and oysters look and I imagine taste like clots of phlegm.

Mayonnaise - scrotal secretions of the Devil Himself

Chilli chocolate - chilli yum, chocolate yum, together.....why?! No it does not work.
