DH just asked if i ironed 0-3 babygrows. Then looked really shocked when i said no. He said his mum would!!!
I keep reminding him he didn't marry his mum....especially when hes ill (thats a different story!!) AIBU to be flabbergasted by the question in the first place.....then the response just topped it off.
Does anyone actually iron babygrows??? Is it just me??

I don't iron anything either. In the past (as well as my mother in law) women believed it was more hygienic to iron as the heat killed the germs.

expatinscotland · 10/02/2018 17:41

Um, nah, I don't iron babygrows.

CheeseAndOnionIceCream · 10/02/2018 17:46

Tell him to do it if it bothers him! I don't iron anything. My DM was the same, but I can remember her telling me that her DM ironed EVERYTHING. Towels, tea towels, socks, even knickers and bras! Shock

GiddyGardner · 10/02/2018 17:47

I buy clothes that don't need an iron...so I avoid buying shirts for work. The only thing that gets ironed in our house is DH's work shirts...and not by me! I once melted a collar on his shirt an hour before we were due at my brother's wedding, we haven't discussed it since. He thinks I'm rubbish at ironing, and that suits me, I'm not correcting him.

pollymere · 10/02/2018 17:56

I think people used to...before they were made of soft fabrics where ironing is pointless! It strikes me as something a smug mum would do just to be able to look down on others. I'd just laugh at him and say you can't believe his Mum didn't have better things to do with her time. Buy him a copy of that poem about playing with your children and letting the house get dusty. Far better to take your dc to the park than iron it's babygros!

happymummy12345 · 10/02/2018 18:00

I iron everything expect bras and socks.
I'd never put my child in un ironed clothes. 1 because I think it looks lazy and awful and 2 what if I was to take a picture of them that day? Their clothes would look awful and creased.

Maireadplastic · 10/02/2018 18:01

Babygros get ironed naturally from the inside...by their lovely hot little bodies.

Katedotness1963 · 10/02/2018 18:07

I don't iron, though I do own one and an ironing board! I'm a master at being by the tumble dryer when it finishes so everything is still warm, gets smoothed out and folded.

gillybeanz · 10/02/2018 18:08

If something needs ironing then it goes on ironing pile, if it doesn't it goes away.
Then when it's needed person irons it.

Ebb · 10/02/2018 18:08

I used to iron everything when mine were babies but I think I'd just gotten into the habit of ironing baby clothes having been a nanny for 20+ years. I was expected to iron as part of my nursery duties. My DC are 9 and 7 now and the tumble dryer 'irons' most of it!

AnnaMagnani · 10/02/2018 18:11

You used to iron things pre-washing machines to make sure they didn't have lice. And to get rid of mould pre-central heating to get rid of damp.
And because pre-elastic and jersey fabrics things needed it. All other ironing is habit or conditioning that some fabrics look better without creases in.

I look at my and DH's entire wardrobe now and the only thing that needs ironing are his shirts.

Springprim · 10/02/2018 18:20

Isn't that why women have maternity leave - to iron babygro's & cook their husbands dinners? 😜

AprilLady4 · 10/02/2018 18:32

My ironing board is set up in the kitchen, being used as a shelf. I think I've got an iron? somewhere....

SunshineHQ · 10/02/2018 18:43

To go against the crowd ... I DID iron (and washed them first) all DS's 0-3 baby grows, but ONLY while I was still pregnant, waiting for him to arrive, and 'nesting' like crazy .....

I did the same with all the new muslin squares too.

lurkingnotlurking · 10/02/2018 18:46

Yeah definitely. In a parallel universe. God, who's got the time or inclination?

ChasedByBees · 10/02/2018 18:49

The question implies it would be your job to iron them. That’s what would irritate me.

Springtrolls · 10/02/2018 18:49

My iron stopped working about 20 years ago. it met with an accident. It was hardly used anyway, and we were skint. Decided to see how often anyone went for the iron.
It's still in the shop.
so no never ironed baby gros, school shirts or anything else

Flobalob · 10/02/2018 18:50

I will only iron when I really need to, which usually equates to once or twice a year ie a school play costume or for a professional photoshoot.

OMGafourth · 10/02/2018 18:56

I did with my first... I ironed EVERYTHING but the bedlinen (which my gran always did...) but after that I gave up. I now only iron shirts for school and work. Everything else just gets put away... Eventually!

ToothTrauma · 10/02/2018 19:01

I don’t even know where my iron is. MIL has a great big fancy steam pod setup and regularly flattens everything in her house.

DM used to iron when I was small but she hasn’t for years. Must have seen sense at some point Grin I do have quite nice memories of us watching TV on a Sunday afternoon while she wsssh-pahhhhhed away in the background.

WonderTweek · 10/02/2018 19:02

I washed and ironed all the baby clothes we got when I was pregnant. It was like a weird second nature because lots of people do it where I come from. I chatted to my colleague about it and she did the same when she had a baby (she's from a similar country). I don't know why I did it but when baby was finally here I gradually stopped as I realised that I couldn't keep up with it and most importantly that it didn't actually achieve anything. Grin

But yes, maybe it's a cultural/generational thing.

Cineraria · 10/02/2018 19:05

I used to iron everything of DS1's: babygrows, muslins, terry and prefold cloth nappies, tights, scratch mitts and his lovely little linen and cotton rompers. I thought he always looked lovely. The iron broke when I was pregnant with DS2 and feeling rotten and I haven't got round to replacing it. DS2 usually throws up a lot when being dressed so often soaks a couple of outfits before we get one that stays sufficiently dry for him to wear it. I still think he always looks lovely too, though slightly more crumpled and usually a bit whiffy!

Strongmummy · 10/02/2018 19:20

Tell him to go and iron his cock and ball sack

Sara107 · 10/02/2018 19:22

I ironed babygrows, as I tend to run the iron over everything. We don't have an airing cupboard so ironing makes sure that the last bit of dampness is gone and the clothes won't go smelly and stale.

NovemberWitch · 10/02/2018 19:23

OH ironed everything, including babygros. The tricky thing is stopping him. He likes ironing. If it bothers your partner, let him iron them.
