To be given milk to drink that had been open for 3 days!

Now I expect to be flamed for this, and for it to seem really silly to lots of people....

.... but I was diagnosed with IBS around 4 years ago now after being terribly ill on and off for a few months.

I was told to keep a diary to figure out what 'triggers' caused me problems. After around a year I worked out what foods and drinks caused me to be poorly.

I love milk, will drink 1/2 a pint a day on its own or have it with cereal, I rarely drink any hot drinks. However, I soon realised that if my milk was not REALLY fresh (used same day opened or day after) I got terrible stomach pains. So even thou it's more expensive I tend to buy a pint at a time for home use and I try to avoid drinking milk elsewhere.

I nipped in to see my sister today after work, she is well aware of this strange issue of mine. She asked me if I would like a drink. I said I fancied milk but if she didn't have 'fresh' milk i would have some water. She went to the kitchen and came back with a glass of milk claiming 'I have just opened it' I drank it and soon after left.

About an hour ago I started to feel really funny, stomach pains and grumbling pains Sad I couldn't figure out where I had gone wrong and rang my sister to check on the milk she had given me. She laughed and said it had been open a few days but it was fine so she didn't think anything of it and thought I was just paranoid Angry

AIBU to be upset with her? I didn't say much to her on the phone other than explain that I do think that could be why I may now feel poorly tonight Sad

Yes Kochicoo the national stats can hide a lot of regional variation - like the differences between England and Scotland for instance. In England men are more likely to be obese, in Scotland it's women.

I really should get some work done

MissDuke · 08/02/2018 12:00

OMG some posters on this thread are hilarious!!! It is weird to drink milk at someone else's house? It is weird because the poster themselves doesn't like milk (therefore clearly no one should) I hate milk but wasn't aware that that means everyone should. It is weird because it wasn't bedtime or there was no chocolate cake with it (my favourite post Grin )

Seriously people, you really cannot see that just because you don't do something, it doesn't automatically make it weird? Grin

OP this totally makes sense to me, of course all consumables will begin to spoil once open and many items are 'off' before their use by date just because they have been opened, I am amazed so many posters don't know this!

Your sister was extremely unreasonable and I would have hoped she would have been mortified and more sympathetic having caused you to be unwell!

Cannot she not see that she has now proved your point with this???

It amazes me that so many people think adults shouldn't drink milk. There is so much talk on here of wine and gin etc, which is so expensive and unhealthy, but yet the judgey and disapproving reactions are against..... milk??

blackchina · 08/02/2018 12:01

@MargaretCavendish

The posts insisting that 'adults don't drink milk' are so strange. Most adults maybe don't drink milk by the glass full, but who do you think is consuming all those lattes? I had porridge made with 300ml of milk, so a glassful, for breakfast this morning - should I not have done, as I'm an adult?

Exactly. The 'adults shouldn't drink milk thing' is such a daft thing to say! The majority of people consume it. Like you said, lattes and cappuccinos and hot chocolate etc, and milk in tea and coffee, and milk on cereal, and not forgetting all the stuff people eat that is MADE with milk..... chocolate, biscuits, cakes, cheese, pastries, butter, yogurt, ice cream, etc etc etc.

We MAY not have consumed cow's milk several centuries ago, but we do a lot of stuff now that we didn't do then.... the list is endless. And it has been established multiple times for many decades that milk is good for us, with its calcium and vitamins and proteins etc....

'Who goes to someone's house and asks for a glass of milk?'

Me. I love it.

MipMipMip · 08/02/2018 12:07

I can believe that milk changes once opened. It's about access to air. Have you ever tried a bottle of water that's been open weeks? It tastes different. So why not milk?

MissDuke · 08/02/2018 12:09

I just read the small print on my milk and it does say use within 3 days of opening, so obviously it does change when opened and is expected to be spoiled by three days. It will of course spoil gradually.

Admittedly we don't pay attention to this and just do the sniff test but some people are more sensitive than others!

Chowmum · 08/02/2018 12:22

Oddly enough, an awful lot of posters not answering the OP's question (and that hardly ever happens on MN).
I have IBS, I drink milk, I am also extremely sensitive to milk's offness. Milk doesn't sit around for 3 days and then instantly go off like someone flipped a switch. The pasteurisation process kills most harmful bacteria, but certain bacteria (lactobacilli, spores, etc) are not destroyed. These will multiply pretty rapidly once the milk is exposed to the air.
I can usually judge when milk is going to go off (ie that's fine for today, but it'll be off tomorrow).

And to answer the AIBU - your sister was the unreasonable one. She didn't take your medical condition seriously, and that is disrespectful and harmful.
Why do people do this?

LittleMe03 · 08/02/2018 12:31

I feel I should change my name to something like StrangeMilkDrinkingLady Wink

We MAY not have consumed cow's milk several centuries ago

WE did though. Not only was drinking milk okay, it gave us all a large evolutionary advantage. Had your ancestors not consumed dairy, its quite likely that you would not be reading this right now.

MrMeSeeks · 08/02/2018 12:55

*Today 09:23 MrsPreston11

I have IBS, any glass of milk, fresh or not, will give me agony and the shits.

You're a grown up, you don't need to be drinking glasses of milk at all.*

We don't need tv, fast food or the internet either but amazingly most people still have that...

Just because the some people's ibs triggers is milk, does not make it true for everyone.
I have ibs and can have all milk bar one.
Just like a lot of people avoid spicy food, some don't.
It isn't the same rule.

Iwillstartagainonmonday · 08/02/2018 12:59

But I've never had a visitor request milk or witnessed anyone pour themselves a glass when I've visited them. I can't think of any adults that I know who have it as a drink rather than just on cereal or in tea.

When you have a spare half an hour. Find a greasy spoon nearby you, ideally with a construction project nearby. Around 10am/11am they'll be a stream of builders come in for their breakfast at their breaktime, count how many order a pint of milk with their fryups, it'll be at least a handful.

Iwillstartagainonmonday · 08/02/2018 13:06

It would be slightly odd to ask for a double shot of vodka at 10am in the morning round a friends house, granted, but milk?

I don't know soupdragon. I'd have happily asked for a a double shot of vodka today after the stressful morning I had! Grin

Chienrouge · 08/02/2018 13:09

I’d probably be less surprised by my friends asking for a double vodka than a glass of milk!

LittleMe03 · 08/02/2018 13:46

Everybody has different likes and dislikes and it would be a boring world if everybody always agreed with others.

One thing we can all agree on here I think is that we like to waste our time on MN discussing milk!

OP posts:
HateSummer · 08/02/2018 14:03

I’ve not said drinking milk is weird, so you don’t need to change your name just yet! I drink milk with chocolate cake or after a bar of chocolate. Asking for milk at someone’s house was what seemed strange to me. Grin

LittleMe03 · 08/02/2018 14:09

@HateSummer
Do you drink milk if you go to a birthday party and the cake is chocolate CakeGrin

OP posts:
HateSummer · 08/02/2018 14:17

No Grin, because I think asking for milk when you’re out is weird, remember? Wink

bedtimestories · 08/02/2018 14:22

Regardless, your wishes should of been respected, to be lied to by a sister

Notevilstepmother · 08/02/2018 14:49

Well, this is just a school science project, but it does seem to confirm that exposure to air makes milk go off more quickly.

gussyfinknottle · 08/02/2018 14:49

Total derail but anyone remember the most excellent song by Garbage called "Milk".

Milk is ace and you're a weirdo if you think milk is only for babies and adult weirdos. So there.

Notevilstepmother · 08/02/2018 14:54

The shelf life of milk is increased if packed with nitrogen instead of air.

Sparklyglitter · 09/02/2018 17:35

The facts are that op has kept a diary so knows what the issues are, whether we think it’s odd or not isn’t really the point! The point is that her sister lied and then thought it was funny that her sister is in pain!
I manage my MS with a diet rather than take very strong drugs that you don’t know if they make a difference, you just have to hope you don’t have another episode! However odd anyone thinks my decision is I don’t really care as it’s my life or lack thereof so my decision to make.

Strongmummy · 09/02/2018 18:02

Milk is your issue I think. I don’t understand why it would matter whether it’s been opened or not. I have a mild issue with milk and one day I’m fine, one day I’m not even if I have the same amount on both days so I don’t think you should read much into your analysis as to what gives you IBS. Your sister shouldn’t have fed you a line, but perhaps she (possibly rightly) thinks your being a bit precious

Buttons44 · 09/02/2018 18:04

I was "diagnosed" with ibs years ago given multiple different pills to help me. Years later things got bad and my acne was awful too and I cut dairy from my diet (after "reseraching" (googling) that i could have a lactose intolerance) a month later acne gone and ibs almoat gone no longer taking pills. So maybe just maybe you have an intolerance? There is absolutely no difference between "fresh" milk and 3 day old milk, its pasteurised...

nannykatherine · 09/02/2018 18:14

obviously your sister is trying to kill you
i don't know what you want us to do about it tho

SoupDragon · 09/02/2018 18:16

There is absolutely no difference between "fresh" milk and 3 day old milk, its pasteurised...

Why do you have to use it within X days of opening then?
