To be given milk to drink that had been open for 3 days!

Now I expect to be flamed for this, and for it to seem really silly to lots of people....

.... but I was diagnosed with IBS around 4 years ago now after being terribly ill on and off for a few months.

I was told to keep a diary to figure out what 'triggers' caused me problems. After around a year I worked out what foods and drinks caused me to be poorly.

I love milk, will drink 1/2 a pint a day on its own or have it with cereal, I rarely drink any hot drinks. However, I soon realised that if my milk was not REALLY fresh (used same day opened or day after) I got terrible stomach pains. So even thou it's more expensive I tend to buy a pint at a time for home use and I try to avoid drinking milk elsewhere.

I nipped in to see my sister today after work, she is well aware of this strange issue of mine. She asked me if I would like a drink. I said I fancied milk but if she didn't have 'fresh' milk i would have some water. She went to the kitchen and came back with a glass of milk claiming 'I have just opened it' I drank it and soon after left.

About an hour ago I started to feel really funny, stomach pains and grumbling pains Sad I couldn't figure out where I had gone wrong and rang my sister to check on the milk she had given me. She laughed and said it had been open a few days but it was fine so she didn't think anything of it and thought I was just paranoid Angry

AIBU to be upset with her? I didn't say much to her on the phone other than explain that I do think that could be why I may now feel poorly tonight Sad

Really shitty of your sister. If you know that not-quite-fresh milk affects your IBS and makes you ill, that should have been all she needed to know. She lied to you and gave you something that made you ill.

I'd be really pissed off with her.

Greensleeves · 09/02/2018 18:22

IMO it's not different from the arseholes who would put a sneaky chicken stock cube in soup and serve it to vegetarians, because it "makes no difference" and "what they don't know won't hurt them". Horrible.

Gwenvamp · 09/02/2018 18:28

I also have IBS, I cannot drink full fat milk. I would be in agony with stomach cramps & chronic diarrhea after (sorry tmi). I’m fine with skim milk though :-) not nice of your sister to not tell you. But most people think it’s just a person being awkward. I hav been told to ‘let loose for the holidays’ as if my drinking skim was a slimming thing rather than necessary for my IBS!

Thingiebob · 09/02/2018 18:29

Your sister doesn't take your condition seriously I'm afraid.
Clearly there is a difference between just opened milk and milk that has had exposure to air over time. It's the change after exposure that seems to be affecting your gut. Could be some bacteria I suppose and how it is interacting with your gut and the existing food in you.

Ignore all those insisting you shouldn't drink milk. Most of us are here due to our ancestors drinking milk.

worrierandwine · 09/02/2018 18:30

I have IBS and am totally lactose intolerant. Have never liked the taste of milk and would NEVER drink a glass of it but before I found out what was causing my terrible upset stomach and diarrhoea I would have it on cereals, in tea and cooked with it etc. It was inconsiderate of your sister to give you milk that she is aware upsets your stomach but TBH, if I were as sensitive to the milk being fresh I wouldn’t trust anyone else and just have something else when out.

LittleMe03 · 09/02/2018 18:30

*@nannykatherine *

i don't know what you want us to do about it tho

You could say this about almost everything MN's post. It's not really helpful in any way thou is it Hmm

virtualreality · 09/02/2018 18:33

If I was potentially that affected, I would bring my own in a little chiller holder. I would trust no one, no one.... do you hear me lol.

Your issue to solve love. BYO!

NotReadyToMove · 09/02/2018 18:34

Well you have basically been at the receiving end of the fact that y people, incl am y peole on MN, think that all those ‘allergies’ and ‘intolerance’ are Just daddy diets or people being difficult.

And actually, I’m surprised that no one has jumped yet in the idea that you can’t be allergic or intolerant to milk as you do drink it and therefore it’s all in your head!

What I would have done though is to be much more clear to your dsis.
Because she clearly didn’t believe you (and tbh, in the RL most people wouldn’t believe you) and that was your opportunity to make a point so it doesn’t happen again.

As for the milk, I agree, I wouod stay clear if milk altogether with the IBS. It might be that really fresh milk is ok (and then I would go with raw milk). But I suspect that even the freshly open milk has some ffect in your body, albeit not as strong.

PolarBearkshire · 09/02/2018 18:35

I think ots in your head. In any case if yiu really have IBS - reduce milk consumption drastically. Also UHT milk could be an answer to your imagination- its cooked and no way it will cause you any efffects if opened for days.
Off milk is actually better for us - i put a bit of lemon juice to curdle milk for good bacteria in my gut. Too much milk is not good though

Greensleeves · 09/02/2018 18:36

The issue is that her sister lied to her. Had she said "no, sorry, it's been open a few days" OP could have just had a glass of water instead.

Mafrid2 · 09/02/2018 19:03

I have ibs and dairy doesn't affect me at all everyone is different. My worst trigger is nestle chocolate 😣 but I can eat cadburys And most others, so it must be something in nestle that isn't In Others. Maybe a certain bacteria increases in milk after its been opened A while? Xx

virtualreality · 09/02/2018 19:06

Doesn't matter what anyone says about milk.

If you will be affected, BYO milk, or have a juice or water. Your choice surely.

Very easy to condemn others. Divas abound.

Greensleeves · 09/02/2018 19:07

Or avoid relatives who tell lies in answer to straightforward questions.

There’s also a link between high dairy consumption in premenopausal women and reduced rates of breast cancer though.

There’s very little evidence at all that dairy intake is associated with an increase in breast cancer and there have been a fair number of studies looking at it over the last 20+ years.

gussyfinknottle · 09/02/2018 19:24

What scaremongering! Milk gives you breast cancer? Don't trot out half baked unsubstantiated rubbish.

crispsandgin · 09/02/2018 19:26

I would be careful with milk as it has been linked to breast cancer. Milk is designed to help baby animals grow very fast, an adult who has finished growing shouldn't be drinking something that causes cell growth or at least should not have it in excess. It contains igf 1 which has been found in tumours

This is scaremongering nonsense and you should be ashamed of yourself spreading it.

Chugalug · 09/02/2018 19:32

Not your mum..not your milk

Crushedgrapesworkforme · 09/02/2018 19:33

No all milk is equal..

Milk quality varies with same day opened vs 3 day opened & fresh... the key difference is how long it's sat on the bench for to deteriorate in between uses.. or is replaced back in the fridge within minutes of use...

fresh from store/ home/ and first open all vary in freshness....
Every hour a pint of milk sits on the bench (gets warmed to room temp) it looses a day shelf life...your problem may be with aged milk or the lactose in the milk... try A2 milk it's a special variety of milk that doesn't react with sensitive stomach/ IBS inflammation issues.

virtualreality · 09/02/2018 19:38

Once again....

Why does OP not organise his/her milk to their own satisfaction

Feck sake.

manicmij · 09/02/2018 19:44

Sure you aren't dairy intolerant to some degree. What do you know happens to mild after being opened a couple if days that upsets your intestines? Lying to you wasn't on though.

virtualreality · 09/02/2018 19:54

Bollox to milk where the drinker of milk is blaming everyone apart from themselves. Get a strategy of your own. Simple.

Otherwise it is attention seeking IMV. You know the consequences for you, so plan for that. Shakes head.

DaisyEmma · 09/02/2018 19:56

I’d look into how milk is produced.. it’s actually quite nightmarish. There’s a UK prog on Netflix called ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ or if you’re short of time ‘Dairy is Scary’ on YouTube. Both worth a look.

We will never leave our houses or cook anything anymore now. So sad and we are so manipulated by all this stuff.

Everything is just so scary now, but we were born when none of this shite was evident. We are still here.

There is another agenda I think! Grow up and do your own thing. But if you want to be dictated to by some guru, off you go.
