To ask dog owners at the beach why you don’t

pick up plastic litter ?

I run along a beautiful coastline and see the same dog walkers ignoring the plastic.

You have a bag ready and will walk past a bin. AIBU to think that this would be a help to the environment ?

I will have two very small, thin dog poo bags to hand. It would have to be a tiny piece of plastic with no sharp edges for me to contemplate it and I haven’t yet. It’s more important that I’m never caught short without poo-bags when my dog shits.

Vitalogy · 06/02/2018 16:02

Why don't they get prisoners to do it.

longtompot · 06/02/2018 16:03

I saw a FB post about beaches and the rubbish on them, and how if everyone, that is EVERYONE picks up three pieces of rubbish, everytime they went to the beach, then the beaches would be cleaner. We have now adopted that practise Smile

I could mention what runners could do, but that might derail the thread Grin

ScreamingValenta · 06/02/2018 16:07

I often find dog poo bins are full or nearly full, meaning the lid can't be put down or people have to leave poo bags next to it Envy. Adding other litter would exacerbate this problem - better to keep the poo bins for poo only, as bags full of poo are much worse to look at if left out than (say) plastic bottles.

mrsm43s · 06/02/2018 16:08

Gosh, it's disappointing to see how may dog walkers are saying "Why the hell should we?"

FWIW, I'm not sure why the OP singled out dog walkers alone, but sure we should ALL pick up any litter we see lying around on beaches. If we're out and about walking along the beach, why would anyone not pick up any litter they saw and put it in the bin? Dog walkers/couples strolling/families playing - everyone.

Lets all take a bit of responsibility to keep our beaches and countryside clean.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 06/02/2018 16:10

When out with the Scouts we have a litter pick 10 minutes if we are rural.

Some of our 'nicer' camp sites with accommodation are let for wedding parties. Last year I was bringing thek ids back from an activity and the pathway was chocca with beer cans and Bailey's bottles. (I'm looking at you lot at Gilwell you ignorant people)

Wouldn't hurt any one to take 3 pieces of litter home each.

Chanelprincess · 06/02/2018 16:12

I agree - we need collective responsibility to keep our environment clean. It's not the sole responsibility of any one group.

It would work even better if NOBODY littered. Wink

It's always the same people who a) don't litter, b) feel responsible for picking up other people's litter. Sad

Charolais · 06/02/2018 16:20

Why don’t you clean this crap up off the beach;

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2018 16:20

I haven't been to a beach in about 3 years. How much do I have to pick up if we go this year?

TemptressofWaikiki · 06/02/2018 16:20

OP, I suggest if you run there all the time and see the plastic rubbish, then fecking pick it up yourself and stop being a goady brat!

Toooldtobearsed · 06/02/2018 16:21

Well, I am a dog walker, walk 2 of them in fact, and when going to the beach, i usually take a carrier bag and pick bits up along the way. It keeps me amused for ten minutes and helps clear up, a wee bit.
HOWEVER, three times in the past 3 or 4 months, i have seen runners on the beach toss empty water bottles aside, without breaking stride. Unfortuneately, i am too slow to catch up with the he buggers and hand them back!

Everyone needs to just pick something up, be it a single plastic bottle (no need for a bag), or a bin liner full of crap.

Lovelyusername · 06/02/2018 16:22

Had a cup of tea and now here you all are!

Yes I run AND pick up litter, I truly am gifted Grin
Why dog owners in particular? As they often walk the same route, so could make a big difference.
Yes we should all do it, but the dog walkers know they are going somewhere with extra litter and could bring an EXTRA bag. Shocker !

So I see the same ones (dog walkers), walking past the same plastic. Which makes me think that they could do it too.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2018 16:23

Temptress runners cannot stop remember, not for any reason whatsoever let alone litter picking.

How about if you run with your dog? What then? Shock

HoneyDragon · 06/02/2018 16:23

Dog walkers also walk past lots of potholes and could easily carry some tarmac, a shovel and small roller.

That would ensure the runners don’t trip over.

Lweji · 06/02/2018 16:24

Unfortuneately, i am too slow to catch up with the he buggers and hand them back!

You could always set the dogs on them. Wink

falsepriest · 06/02/2018 16:25

@HoneyDragons

Could also carry a mallet, some sturdy cardboard, thumb tacks, a sharpie and a stake. Would enable them to erect signs giving directions to local amenities for anyone who could be lost who can't distract a runner.

WeAllHaveWings · 06/02/2018 16:25

I would suspect dog walkers go for a walk to relax, wind down and interact with their dog, not do housekeeping picking up manky litter.

HoneyDragon · 06/02/2018 16:27

I always carry my poo bags in my bra. I’m going need to a bigger bra.

Lweji · 06/02/2018 16:28

@HoneyDragon perhaps we should stage a bra intervention for it.

HoneyDragon · 06/02/2018 16:29

We could make them out of discarded plastic?

Lweji · 06/02/2018 16:31

1,5 L bottle tops would be great. Particularly if you were breastfeeding.

Lweji · 06/02/2018 16:31

Unless you had tiny breasts, in which case, 330ml bottles would be enough.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 06/02/2018 16:32

That is some strange logic...

I commute every day, as do millions of people along the same routes... should we pick up all the litter along those paths each day?!
