To ask dog owners at the beach why you don’t

pick up plastic litter ?

I run along a beautiful coastline and see the same dog walkers ignoring the plastic.

You have a bag ready and will walk past a bin. AIBU to think that this would be a help to the environment ?

I make a point of picking up 3 pieces of plastic litter every day when I take my dog to our local beach, everyone who walks there regularly does this. It's a campaign called Take 3 For The Sea.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2018 15:39

I think it was about someone asking a runner for directions SumThucker. Caused quite a furore. Grin

Notso · 06/02/2018 15:41

Given the vast amounts of bagged and unbagged poo that gets left lying around many dog owners obviously don't care about picking up their own litter never mind anyone else's.

Greensleeves · 06/02/2018 15:41

Agree it would be lovely if dog owners just picked up their own animals' shit. Baby steps.

agedknees · 06/02/2018 15:42

Lots of elderly walk dogs too, you know with their sore knees, sore hips, bad backs. You want them to bend and pick up rubbish?

HuskyMcClusky · 06/02/2018 15:42

No dog poo on our beaches, bagged or otherwise. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2018 15:43

Brilliant Redpony, I thought it might have been about directions. Grin

Sirzy · 06/02/2018 15:44

We have stopped and picked up litter when running before now. I think if you can it’s good to pick up a few bits

RadioGaGoo · 06/02/2018 15:45

Agedknees. I think we all know that not everyone is physically fit enough to do what the OP is suggesting.

Frillyhorseyknickers · 06/02/2018 15:45

I do pick my own dogs shit up religiously and also make a hobby out of being passive aggressive to binners who don’t pick their dog shit upbut I do not have the time nor the inclination to spend my mornings picking up other people’s litter. Why don’t you pick it up? Genuine question.

SumThucker · 06/02/2018 15:45

Haha yes! Grin

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 06/02/2018 15:48

God here we go I own a dog so I must be a dreadful person...be selfish...not care about anything etc etc.

Perhaps if dog ploughs through a 2 year old or chases a runner or does a massive poo I can just yell "sorry guys, I missed that, I was picking up plastic rubbish".

Maybe all beach users regardless of dog, toddler or running shoes should pick up litter. Or we could just stop producing less plastic as a species...just a thought.

Disclaimer; dog is always on a lead or under strong vocal control, I always pick up poo and I sometimes even pick up other people's litter if I see it. Just don't tell me what I should and shouldn't do because your too fast or too important to do it your damn self.

And people wonder why I prefer dogs company to a lot of humans.

blueskyinmarch · 06/02/2018 15:50

When i am at the beach with my dog i am checking where she is and where she is pooing, i am collecting said poo, i am watching she isn't being really annoying to other people and i am enjoying my walk and looking around me. Then i am wrangling her onto her lead and heading back to my car via the bin.

Why do i also need to pick up other peoples litter? Surely i would need a further bigger bag in my pocket to collect this? Why are you not suggesting that families with children or couples out for a stroll pick up litter? So many questions!

HuskyMcClusky · 06/02/2018 15:50

Colours - hear, hear.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/02/2018 15:50

I walk along a beach with my dog. I presume you don’t pick up the litter because —you clearly think it’s someone else’s problem— you’re, you know, running. I don’t pick up the litter because I’m, you know, enjoying a walk with my dog. I do however volunteer for the monthly local beach clean on a Sunday morning once a month. Do you?

Oldsu · 06/02/2018 15:52

I do if I see something that could cause injury to my dogs and other dogs like glass or sharp objects or something they may eat (or roll in) several times I have had to stop my dogs exploring shitty nappies left on the beach we also get a lot of fish hooks left on the beach and I always pick them up and dispose of them carefully.

falsepriest · 06/02/2018 15:54

If I'm walking my dog along a beach with a tied-up bag of his turds in it, I'm hardly likely to untie it and put some jogger's discarded gel packet in it just because at some point in the next 10 minutes I'll be visting a shitbin. Each responsible for their own, you GF.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 06/02/2018 15:55

@Coloursthatweremyjoy I think I love you. I have found my people/person!

SillyLittleBiscuit · 06/02/2018 15:56

I think bending down every few km to pick up rubbish would be a great additional bit of exercise whilst running.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 06/02/2018 15:57

AIBU to think that everyone should just pick up their litter?

There you go OP, fixed that for you.

diddl · 06/02/2018 15:58

Why is it specifically dog walkers that should be picking up other people's rubbish, Op?

Snacktimonious · 06/02/2018 15:59

The problem is people not dog owners

I don't think OP was blaming dog owners for the rubbish. I think she was just saying that if you're ambling around on the beach anyway. . .

Orlandsundry · 06/02/2018 15:59

We should all pick up litter on the beach if we see it surely? I do if I see anything especially discarded fishing nets, or plastic items.

agedknees · 06/02/2018 15:59

Radio - op asked the question and I gave a reason.
