pick up plastic litter ?

I run along a beautiful coastline and see the same dog walkers ignoring the plastic.

You have a bag ready and will walk past a bin. AIBU to think that this would be a help to the environment ?

Why not get involved?

You know what, OP? I'm not a dog walker - and I know you weren't 'picking on them' - but I live near the beach and will make an effort to pick up some plastic next time I walk near the sea; normally got a bag full of toddler crap anyway.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 07/02/2018 13:56

Today 09:16 Lovelyusername

I am not trying to be goady, honest.
If your dog is so uncontrollable it requires all of your attention then that’s slightly worrying. But still I am sure they are a sweetie when you get to know them.

Nope, not goady at all. Honest.

Lovelyusername · 07/02/2018 14:12

Oh OK, slightly goady then.

Anyway at least three people have said they will start picking up beach litter. So that is really good.

To all the outraged dog walkers who were so upset that I even mentioned dogs, surely we have to start somewhere. So ask the dog walkers, with time and bags, then ask the runners, then ask the families.

But it has to start somewhere doesn’t it?

OP posts:
PositivelyPERF · 07/02/2018 14:23

Why the fuck does it have to start with one individual group? I would have a modicum of respect for your suggestion if you had started the thread asking EVERYONE to help, but the start with dog walkers, THEN runners? You’re spouting off and not listening to the valid reasons the dog walkers have give you. Away and feck.

Op a couple of questions - why do you think dog walkers have more time than others on the beach? And also - how large do you think a poo bag is?

Strokethefurrywall · 07/02/2018 15:36

I collect litter when I walk my dogs on the beach, but I live on a very small island and only started after I did an earth day clean up.

That being said, I never thought about doing it before so I'm guessing neither do the dog walkers. And also, bending down to pick litter with 2 dogs on leashes is pretty back breaking work.

But dog walkers aren't likely to think about picking up litter any more than your average joe walking on a beach Hmm

Lovelyusername · 07/02/2018 16:53

Now you can all think about it and do it if possible! It doesn’t matter that I singled out dog walkers, some have been converted !

David loves you.

To all those dog walkers outraged at EVEN BEING ASKED, do you have dogs coz you find people don’t understand you?

OP posts:
MiddleClassProblem · 07/02/2018 16:55

Nope, just as bad for the environment to let it go to landfill

Actually the bits of plastic that sea life swallow, get caught in etc it is different to a landfill. Still shit but better.

I always pick up plastic from the beach when I’m walking my two adult dogs and puppies that I excercise, socialise and train.

It costs nothing to carry a bag with you. It’s a shame most people don’t worry about what the mess they leave behind is affecting our sea life and wildlife.

If everyone picked up a few items to bin the world would be a happier place. But I guess most people are only concerned about themselves - as always.

Thank you for bringing this to peoples attention OP

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 07/02/2018 17:15

Has anyone pointed out to you that you might do a better job of converting people to your cause if you weren't an arsehole to the people you've randomly singled out to target?

Coulddowithanap · 07/02/2018 17:24

My dad (also a dog walker!) Contacted our council and asked them to provide him with bags so he could pick up little on his dog walks (not a beach).. they gave him bags and a litter grabber! It probably doubled the time he spent walking.. not everyone has the time if they lead a busy life.

I think people should just use bins in the first place.

RavenLG · 07/02/2018 17:28

And there we go. Right out of the goady fucker’s mouth. You just want to shit stir and turn people against dog walkers. Did you get fed up posting I hate dogs on other threads?

PositivelyPERF · 07/02/2018 17:40

It was worth reading this goady fuckery just to see that photo of your wee dog, Francis. He’s adorable.

It must be nice to be a perfect person and not be goady and not be picking on dog walkers. Sadly, this perfect person is not you. I do not carry a big bag walking my dog. I have a small thing on my lead which hold poo bags. I am frequently grateful that I do not have a bigger dog, as the bags are barely big enough for his offerings. They certainly aren't big enough to contain the volumes of plastic you appear to think I will find.

I have very rarely seen mountains (or even small amounts) of plastic on our beach. I am sure this is because we are lucky and perhaps even because of a quirk in the tides, but it is true.

Why don't you organise a sponsored litter pick on your local beach, since it appears to be badly polluted? You can lead by example that way instead of picking on dog walkers.

Snugglepiggy · 07/02/2018 18:04

My dogs poop straight away on a walk ,they are always so excited.Which means I can bag up ,go straight back to the bin to dump the bags and then set off again. It's surprising how much litter can be fitted into 2/3 poo bags actually.Holding a bag over your hand keeps it clean whilst picking up the crisp packet /can etc .Then back to the bin again, sometimes several times as a lot of the rubbish is near the parking areas. The poor dogs sometimes look at me as if to say can we please start the walk properly ?!But tbh got it off to a fine art now and takes only minutes. I did take exception to some bossy old bag the other day who said very snootily 'I do hope you're going to pick up after those dogs ' and marched off before I could say I have actually, and picked up some litter.
