To ask dog owners at the beach why you don’t

pick up plastic litter ?

I run along a beautiful coastline and see the same dog walkers ignoring the plastic.

You have a bag ready and will walk past a bin. AIBU to think that this would be a help to the environment ?

Anyone with arms could stop and pick up litter, not just dog walkers and not just in the beach.

Presumably you run past bins too?

Greensleeves · 06/02/2018 15:24

Fairy nuff. I do think anyone who visits a beach that is covered in plastic litter should pick a few bits up and put them in the bin. Runners, less so, but walkers yes, dog or no.

Pasithea · 06/02/2018 15:25

Think this thread stinks of not my mess not my problem. Wake up yes it is.

HuskyMcClusky · 06/02/2018 15:26

Why runners less so, though? I really don’t follow the logic.

HuskyMcClusky · 06/02/2018 15:27

Tbf, it is a moot point around here as the beaches I walk my dog near are not covered in plastic.

Myddognearlyatethedeliveryman · 06/02/2018 15:27

Our beach has regular litter pickup days. Schools should suggest dc take part. It's their future and they need to be made aware how much we all need to pick up plastic. And dog poo!!

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2018 15:27

Runners can't stop Husky. Never. ever. I would look for the thread but I think it was in Chat where we were all told runners cannot be stopped.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2018 15:29

Bit of a moot point for me too really Husky as I don't own a dog, or live near a beach, or run. Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 06/02/2018 15:29

I think it’s off that you’re singling our dog owners but I understand it’s becays they should have a bag on then but some don’t have extras.

I think you should just say beach users. It would be helpful if people put bits in a bag or pockets or bucket when they visit the beach. It’s more annoying with those who are there all day, surely?

Anyway for what it’s worth when I’m there walking I always try to pick up a minimum of 10 pieces (it really depends on the tide at the beach I use), sometimes I get a whole bag full.

MiddleClassProblem · 06/02/2018 15:29

As a dog owner that is.

Greensleeves · 06/02/2018 15:30

Runners less so, because often they are timing the runs as part of a process of training, and stopping would totally fuck it up. My dh is training for a 50mile moorland event at the moment and his running programme is pretty carefully constructed. It would be nonsense for him to stop every few feet and pick up a plastic bottle. If we're ambling on the beach for pleasure, both of us would pick up litter and put it in the bin - we wouldn't comb the whole beach, but we'd pick up what was close to us.

SumThucker · 06/02/2018 15:31

I remember the "don't speak EVER to someone running", was bonkers Grin

It's not just dog walkers who should adopt the 'pick up rubbish' surely OP?

agedknees · 06/02/2018 15:32

So if I am walking my dog you expect me to pick litter up, fine. But what happens when the dog poos? One hand with dog lead, one hand with plastic rubbish, third hand picking up poo.

No wait, I only have 2 hands.

Unless you are stopping and picking up rubbish, yabu.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2018 15:32

Thanks SumThucker I didn't dream it did I? I want to search for the thread now. Grin

RadioDorothy · 06/02/2018 15:32

I don't walk my dog on the beach, but when walking through the park yes, I do tend to pick up whatever the filthy little litter flingers from the local schools have dumped. The dog poo bins can't take much, but actually I don't mind taking a rubbish bag with me and putting it in the proper litter bin further round.

The council are very very good at picking it up but they can't be there daily.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2018 15:33

You could take a wheelbarrow aged. Wink Grin

JaimeLannister · 06/02/2018 15:33

It be would great if everyone helped pick up rubbish but a poo bag isn't really suitable. I couldn't fit one plastic bottle in mine.

SirVixofVixHall · 06/02/2018 15:33

I do pick up bits of fishing line etc, but often I only have tiny poo bags with me as I don't always remember a bigger rubbish bag. Why not organise a #twominutebeachclean day on your local beach? That would make a huge difference if you get volunteers together once a month.

AtlanticWaves · 06/02/2018 15:33

I thought this would be about picking up dog poo. I'm still Angry that DS1 got his foot covered in dog poo on a beach with signs up saying no dogs! Envy - not envy Angry

Kezza8 · 06/02/2018 15:34

I visit a beautiful beach every year on holiday and last year we picked up around 50 plastic bottles before we left and put them in the nearby bins. They had been dumped everywhere. I couldn't believe that people could be so lazy. It is up to everyone to do their bit, not just the dog walkers

Recallclock · 06/02/2018 15:37

If you can ask dog owners then I can ask parents to stop leaving dirty nappies of faeces on the beach as happens weekly on ours Angry

HuskyMcClusky · 06/02/2018 15:37

God, what a load of shite. Grin

If I’m with my dog, I’m walking a big, bouncy, distractable animal at a fair clip. I’ve got a few small, poo-sized bags tied to my lead which I’ll need to have empty to put my hand into and turn inside out to pick up poo. I will then have to carry the poo until I get to a bin, which is bouncing around in a flimsy bag while dog leaps around.

The frickin last thing I want to do is take my attention from the dog to pick up rubbish, use my (limited) poo bags on the rubbish, and then juggle the rubbish along with the dog and the poo!

Any runner who expects me to do that can break their precious stride and do it as well, or they’re a total hypocrite.

SumThucker · 06/02/2018 15:37

Definitely wasn't a dream, just tried having a quick look but couldn't find it.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/02/2018 15:37

nope, rather the dog owner be concnetrating on their dog and on the look out for trouble, be that people scared of dogs, small unpredictable children, other dogs or something nasty that the dog might be tempted to eat then vommit somewhere inconvenient, oh and seeing where they poo and picking that up.

SoupDragon · 06/02/2018 15:38

You have a bag ready

Lololol... as others have said, you won’t fit much at all in a poo bag!

Anyway, you too could have a bag ready and will walk past a bin. The problem is people not dog owners.
