Do you read to him or have audio books for him to listen to? Try Ixford Owl for frees ones or whispersync on Amazon

That is bad that school are not helping-I don't know which area you live in but it may be worth looking up the educational psychology service and giving them a call to see how they get their referrals (unfortunately I know my service only referrals from schools but in some areas it may still be possible for parental referrals)

Alternatively there may be learning support outreach in the area (lots of these great services were cut) who can do some assessments. Unfortunately I think that this may be school referral again so you may not get anywhere with that

Is there anyone else in the school that you can speak to who may be able to help? Without knowing it is difficult to say whether the needs are being met in school or what they are doing within school so I don't want to say they aren't meeting needs at this time

If you have spoken to SENCo could you try head of year or someone in leadership and just explain that you are very concerned and want to speak about your child's needs but have not had much luck. It is a schools responsibility to meet the needs of children and to support SEN and inclusion so I would hope that they listen

How is everything else within school-ie what grades are they predicting, are other subjects ok? Are the less academic things going ok (ie break times, any clubs etc). This will be useful to know and share with school so that they can identify if it is a specific concern around one area or more general

Sorry I can't be of more help, hopefully you are in a local authority area where learning assessments are easier to access x

I think part of your issue is the current SEN statement which then means they put all difficulties down to that rather than there being another cause

Keep fighting

Caterpillarx1 · 05/02/2018 20:54

How awful. Does your son have a pediatrician? Or anyone you can talk to? You need to go in and speak to the head teacher and tell them the severity of the stress this is putting on the poor boy. I don’t understand why a child with ASD is being expected to complete the same homework as everyone else in the class. Esp with the melt downs it’s causing him. Please don’t let this continue you need to be firm with them. Are there no specialist schools in your area OP?

KnobZombie7 · 05/02/2018 20:55

If it took nearly a week to complete and the work he does in class is of a similar standard and takes him equally as long, then yes, he most definitely needs support.

There is a lack of understanding about the features of a play script and I assume that play scripts have been covered in class in order for it to have been given as homework.

The premise has little structure; it's rather disjointed and lacks detail. The handwriting's not bad and the spelling's OK but the vocabulary is quite basic.

Maybe the task just wasn't appealing to him. How exciting can a scene set in a school be? School isn't meant to be exciting after all!

Hard to judge fully unless other pieces of work are seen.

Children who read a lot usually draw ideas for writing from the books they have read. Does he enjoy reading?

AdelicaArundel · 05/02/2018 20:56

OP when he had his assessment for ASD, did they also complete an educational psychology assessment to check working memory, auditory processing, processing speed etc.?

Also was he screened for co-morbid dyspraxia and dyslexia?

If not, that would seem to be the first place to investigate (depending on resources in local services where you are).

Understood.org has good resources for helping him to break down large pieces of work into chunks

brizzledrizzle · 05/02/2018 21:02

11 because children tend to make the protagonist the same age as them but I think it looks more like an 8/9 year old.

BlueMirror · 05/02/2018 21:04

If it's the content he's struggling with maybe he could do with a simple planning sheet with a box for who the characters are and other boxes for what happens first, next and in the end and what emotions they could be feeling/emotion words. It might be less daunting to write it then.

LtGreggs · 05/02/2018 21:10

Looks similar to my 10yo work - he does well academically but has mild/moderate dyslexia and a completely 'free' writing task done late in day will be a struggle & not give a good paper impression of him.

Halie · 05/02/2018 21:13

My first thought was 8.

Read it was 12 - I think they could need some more support. They do seem a bit behind. The handwriting also looks quite poor for age 12. They are about 2 years from starting GCSEs so they should be more advanced than this.

Pollaidh · 05/02/2018 21:24

Year 2 based on DC at my DC school.

Pollaidh · 05/02/2018 21:26

Have read the thread now. I'd say he needs support.

As for content - the more they read the more ideas they get. Most kid's stories are based on something they've read. If reading doesn't appeal, then audiobooks - you can get an audible subscription, or libraries have an ok range.

wonderstar1216 · 05/02/2018 21:34

As a teacher of many years I would say year 3/4.

NotAnotherEmma · 05/02/2018 21:37

It sounds like it was written by an 8 or 9 year old...not sure why the school isnt concerned.

wonderstar1216 · 05/02/2018 21:38

Why don't you ask for some end of year expectations? For example, year 6 ones are available and I don't think it meets much of the criteria.

Notthecarwashagain · 05/02/2018 21:59

If he has asd, would it be the whole having to imagine a scene/create a story thing that has caused him issues?

My DS literally cannot invent a story (unless it is very boring- such as someone went to the shop and came home again) and would find it frustrating to have to do this as homework.

Notthecarwashagain · 05/02/2018 22:08

Sorry just re read and saw that he does struggle with content.
I've RTFT (properly) now Blush

tessica2 · 06/02/2018 09:13

Sorry OP I missed the section where you said he had SEN statement of needs (guessing this goes to an echp soon if not yet). If this is the case then the school will need to be holding yearly reviews and if not meeting the needs or you think the plan doesn't reflect you son you can contact the SEN dept and ask for advice (apologies if no Sen statement of need-just saw it referred to in a previous post)
