Why

BlueMirror · 05/02/2018 18:07

I've seen 6 yos write better than this! It's not typical of that age but there is so much variation. In a mainstream yr 1 class there may be someone who can write like this, someone who can't form individual letters yet and everything in between.

caroline161 · 05/02/2018 18:08

Marmalade.....

Cue the "oh my child would have written that age 6 " Grin

Shadowbanned · 05/02/2018 18:09

The child is 12. The school do not have any concerns, I personally feel they are behind in many areas. I was just looking for others input based on this work alone.

Yes if that was what a 12 year old produced I'd also be concerned

Valerrie · 05/02/2018 18:11

I'd say Year 6 ish, though it's always hard to say as some write at a much higher standard and some at a much lower.

UsernameInvalid66 · 05/02/2018 18:12

I don't think this is a teacher writing, I think it's a parent whose child has been told "you write like an x year old," trying to decide whether it would BU to complain.

FWIW, I work with year 5s, and while some of them write more neatly than this, the writing looks more grown up in some ways than theirs - it's got more individuality than the standard rounded handwriting they teach in primary school. I'm going to go with 12 or 13.

MissMouseMcPhee · 05/02/2018 18:12

shadowbanned Can you clarify that the child whose work you have posted and asked people to judge is your child.

Valerrie · 05/02/2018 18:12

Ah, just saw the update.

This would be a lower ability Year 6 IME, so if the child is 12, assuming Year 7, yes I'd expect there to be concerns.

DragonsAndCakes · 05/02/2018 18:12

I’d say about age 9-10, but I suspect older from the writing.

LemonysSnicket · 05/02/2018 18:15

7?
Bord rather than bored, hear rather than here, there rather than they’re, capitals where they shouldn’t be, missing ? Marks.

If 9 ish I wouldn’t be too worried, if 11 it’s not great. The first few lines of dialogue were cute though , if badly written.

YouTheCat · 05/02/2018 18:15

I'd have guessed at about 8/9.

I can't believe the school have no concerns over that, unless it's a bit of planning for a more in-depth piece.

BeesAndChiscuits · 05/02/2018 18:16

Older than 4.

GottadoitGottadoit · 05/02/2018 18:17

Are you planning on mRching into school and showing them the thread OP?

falsepriest · 05/02/2018 18:18

Judging by my GP's notes, could be in their early 40s.

LemonysSnicket · 05/02/2018 18:18

Ah, just seen he’s 12. I’d get him a tutor.

Mind, I had pretty shocking English skills at that age and not have a postgrad degree in lit. Some kids just take some time.

carefreeeee · 05/02/2018 18:18

I'd guess around 10/11/12. It's not terrible for a 12 year old at all - probably slightly below what the average child could do, but schools can't possibly be concerned about every child who's not at the top of the class.

LemonysSnicket · 05/02/2018 18:18

Now*

user187656748 · 05/02/2018 18:19

Hmm, id say towards the bottom of the group if aged 12. Its the sort of thing my DS2 would write in Year 6 (aged 10 SEN and struggles with English).

RhiWrites · 05/02/2018 18:20

I expected age 8 for a number of reasons, not least that I have copies of my own work at this age.

I think this child needs extra support in this area given that they are 12.

Weezol · 05/02/2018 18:21

I would have a little concern at 12, but I would need to know how much time the child had spent on the work.

Probably a lined sheet underneath to help with presentation and a handwriting work boom at home.

I say this as someone who had similar problems with handwriting, spacing and presentation at a similar age, despite my ability being that of a 15/16 year old in terms of vocabulary, comprehension, spelling and content.

My English teacher helped me out quite discreetly by giving me the lined sheet and some worksheets to take home. Things improved in around six weeks.

Are you planning on mRching into school and showing them the thread OP?

Yes that’s exactly what I’m going to do... Hmm

Or I could ya know, just be looking for opinions from other mums for my own peace of mind.
