Work book even...

GetOutOfMYGarden · 05/02/2018 18:23

11 because the child in the story is 11. Always the biggest clue Wink

Reallycantbebothered · 05/02/2018 18:23

11?...dyspraxia and dyslexia spring to mind

x2boys · 05/02/2018 18:26

It's mumsnet Marmalade some will be suggesting their child came out of the womb writing like this Grin

rocketgirl22 · 05/02/2018 18:26

Age 9 - 12. Certainly not year two they will not be applying grammar so evenly nor will confident in using the word 'respected'. Certainly an older child.

zeeboo · 05/02/2018 18:27

That looks like year 7 boys work to me. My sons both looked worse. One got A in GCSE English and one got a B.
Love the liars going "oh clearly year 2, because my little Timmy is 9 and he is writing his own novels and proofreading translations from Aramaic"

Indie139 · 05/02/2018 18:28

Year 5 or 6

Ellie56 · 05/02/2018 18:28

About 7.

My sen 14 year writes like that.

CoraPirbright · 05/02/2018 18:30

I would want to know how this child is with their science and maths. Sometimes, a child’s talents lie dry heavily in one direction. OP do they have a bent towards the sciences?

ShmooBooMoo · 05/02/2018 18:31

How old is the child who did this work?

I'd have guessed nine or so.

liltingleaf · 05/02/2018 18:31

I think maybe it's just not his best work. I would have produced work like that, at that age, occasionally if I wasn't really trying. The fact that it is not the proper format is easily solved, could have just forgot. I got my degree in English. How does he feel about this piece of work?

booellesmum · 05/02/2018 18:32

I was going to say 7/8. That was based on spelling, punctuation, layout and content.
I would be concerned and speaking to school again.
Hope you get some answers/help.

SquareDot · 05/02/2018 18:33

My 8 year can write a lot people than that, but then they are at the top end academically.

rocketgirl22 · 05/02/2018 18:33

If the child is age 12 and the school are saying there is no problem, this is absolutely untrue, clearly!
I would not say it is the worst I have ever seen, but a 12 year old should confidently be able to produce an essay by this age (typically 45 minutes long) with very few spelling mistakes, and the grammar should be more or less there with a coherent and interesting story line.

I would be feeling alarmed if my child was producing this (I have a child of the same age) and she isn't a natural when it comes to English.

I would be getting a tutor if you can afford one, and raising this with the head of English. You are only a few years away from GCSE.

BlueMirror · 05/02/2018 18:33

I don't think anyone has said their child could write like this in ks1. Just that they've seen it. I've worked in a few schools and met a handful of ks1 children who could punctuate, spell and write more neatly than this. And I'm sure that there are many adults who would struggle to write to this standard as well.
If it is typical of the child's writing then it's clearly below average for 12. Whether it is enough below to qualify for intervention depends on the school.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 05/02/2018 18:34

I have read your update so know the age, but it’s the age I was going to say. The whole new kid/no friends/no respect thing sounds very much 11/12 yo to me. It’s not very well written, but it’s homework - probably minimal effort!

rocketgirl22 · 05/02/2018 18:35

I hope you get some help with this op.

My dd is naturally mathematical so English isn't her favourite subject but she can produce very articulate work now.

Do not give in to their (false) reassurances.

Shadowbanned · 05/02/2018 18:36

Firstly thank you to all who gave sensible replies, I really appreciate the input.

To give a little more information. This work took ds almost a week to complete with many tantrums along the way, he finds school work very difficult. He has ASD but this apparently doesn’t effect him academically. School have been resistant to accept any issues with his work or his diagnosis and repeatedly say he is working at the level expected for his age. Before I speak to them yet again I just needed to hear a few other opinions from other parents.

Look at the 37 signs of dyslexia and see if he has other traits

Ellie56 · 05/02/2018 18:38

I'd be very concerned about that for a 12 year old.Is this a typical piece of work?

Whatshallidonowpeople · 05/02/2018 18:39

How old is the adult who did this post?

x2boys · 05/02/2018 18:40

Sorry Op both my kids have sen ds1 (mildly) but hes 11 and no way could he write as a well as that so I always eye roll when people suggest 6 and 7byr olds could write like that .

Moanaohnana · 05/02/2018 18:41

OK for a 12 year old if it was completed in 45 minutes. Not ok because it took a week. ADHD perhaps?
