I don't have a 12yo. I'm not the only one who guessed this age. The people saying 6 or 7 are being totally ridiculous

They are being ridiculous when they look at it and it actually is like their 7 year olds? Reality is ridiculous to you?
I think it ridiculous to suggest it would be secondary school level, but I wouldn't have been as rude as you.

Honeybooboo123 · 05/02/2018 19:09

9? spelling mistakes my 8 year old makes, e.g. bord, frend etc

I think it's not really about your 7 year old or a year one child. It's about the OPs child and her concerns. My mum couldn't write what he has done and she is 74, but my mum is irrelevant as your child is now we know the context.

Smartiepants79 · 05/02/2018 19:12

I would expect similar from the bottom end of my yr5/6 class. I would have concerns if it was my child.

FingersCrossedHard · 05/02/2018 19:13

This looks like ds1's work when he's not particularly applying himself (a problem ATM)...he's just turned 10, in Year 5.

I would think a 12 year old could definitely do with some support if this is typical of their writing - lots of basic errors like mid-sentence capitals and so on.

Weezol · 05/02/2018 19:15

Shadow I would be pushing the school, SENCo, whoever you need to with regards to the ASD. Good luck! The ASD boards on here are very supportive Brew

Fibbertigibbet · 05/02/2018 19:19

I would say 11, because that is the age of the child in the story, but I would say the work level is more fitting of perhaps a 9 year old.

Jenna43 · 05/02/2018 19:20

Also guessing 6/7 isn't totally ridiculous at all. My year 1 phonics group could manage something like this, possibly without the speech marks though as I'm not sure they've been covered yet. I had one produce two sentences, with connectives, adverbs and correct punctuation, last week and that was in about 5 minutes. It is possible

So they couldn't do the same as this work basically.

Amanduh · 05/02/2018 19:21

Probably y5-6, I’d say they are behind but not drastically so.

grannytomine · 05/02/2018 19:22

OP as someone who suffered at school because of poor handwriting that has just got worse over the years, I found learning to type, having a typewriter, the word processor then laptop and printers a game changer.

If he does work on the computer is the content OK? I'd really want to let him work on a laptop and see what happens. That is just a personal opinion based on my own experience.

If it is a handwriting issue I can say it is terribly demoralizing and I can remember the happiness at getting a lovely new, clean exercise book only to see it look scruffy and covered in red ink really quickly. I hope you get something sorted for him. Good luck.

Amanduh · 05/02/2018 19:23

Actually, re-reading it, no way could any of my y5’s have written that unless guided or written to a template so age 10-11 really.

Jenna43 · 05/02/2018 19:25

I simply don't believe your 7 year old can match this writing. I don't care what you say.

MuffinTip · 05/02/2018 19:31

In awe of the Y1 phonics group who could apparently do this! Can't imagine any 5 or 6 year old I've taught producing anything like this..!

youarenotkiddingme · 05/02/2018 19:36

I was going to type that's about what my ds managed in year 8 - but he has Sen!

So I guess that gives you some answers to your worry about struggling?

youarenotkiddingme · 05/02/2018 19:37

Oh and my ds has asd too!

Catanddogmake6 · 05/02/2018 19:40

Assuming you are still reading Op, another one asking if you have looked at ADHD/ ADD. Often is found alongside ASD but can be disregarded as everything is put down to the ASD. Might not be of course but worth a consider. DD1 made such strides when she tried medication for ADHD as she could actually concentrate. The battles to get the answers on to the page became much easier. Additionally the use of a laptop helped so much as otherwise the fight was about writing rather than her thoughts and knowledge. Good luck anyway.

whitecremeegg · 05/02/2018 19:52

This is what my DD could do at 8 or 9 so yes he's behind but for someone with ASD I'd say it's average?

YouTheCat · 05/02/2018 19:55

Jenna, not exactly, but they are 5/6. I'd fully expect this particular bunch to be able to use speech marks once they're in year 2 though.

YouTheCat · 05/02/2018 19:55

Muffin, they are pretty amazing, tbh. Grin

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 05/02/2018 19:56

I've just done play scripts in my Y3 class and some of them were at this sort of level due to the disjointed nature of the story, and the inconsistent punctuation. Some of them were better than this too.

I'd hazard a guess at a 7/8 year old or a lower ability 9 year old?

tessica2 · 05/02/2018 19:58

Hi OP

I am an Ed Psych and second that if you are concerned please push for further assessment within school.

I spend a lot of time looking at children's work and working with them and i would never guess at a child's age based on solely this piece of work as although there are typical features of written work at different ages, children also vary greatly-depending on motivation, interest in the task, how the task is taught etc etc

If you are concerned I really hope the school will help and seek extra assessment/exploration to look at this. I would also be worried about the time taken to complete the work and stress and would like the school to be helping with this as well.

Best of luck with it all

AnnieAnoniMouse · 05/02/2018 20:24

tessica. Given the reaction from the school already, I’m guessing she’s not going to get very far with them, sadly. Can you suggest any other way of getting him assessed? It seems GP’s aren’t willing/able to help much now either.

Shadowbanned. You updated after I posted. As I said, I’d expect that from a disinterested 11/12 Yo, taking 5 minutes & with a ‘That’ll do’ attitude. If your DS is struggling to produce that, he needs help. Keep on at the school & look at any other route to an assessment you can find. Good luck 💐

Shadowbanned · 05/02/2018 20:32

Thank you for the helpful advice. I have spoke to the school several times, begged for extra support to be told he doesn’t need it, it makes no sense to me. I’ve had CAMHS go in and speak to them and yet nothing’s changed but I will certainly persevere. I just needed some other opinions to be sure I am right to be concerned and to keep pushing.

I should have said, completing on a pc doesnt help, it’s the content he struggles with most of all, he just doesn’t know what to write. Believe it or not he had lots of Parental input and support with it to even get as far as what he produced.
