Just watched the clip of Jacob rees mogg at Bristol university, when a few momentum activists try to cause havoc and stop him from talking

Whatever anyone thinks of this man, I have to say he was pretty gutsy going up to them, considering they are all hiding behind Balaclavas and scarves and there wasn't any security there.
Most politicians wouldn't have gone near them, let alone try to talk to them

I like him. Yes his views are controversial and I don't agree with some of them, but at least he stands up for what he believes in

JRM entering the crowd escalated it, that man might have intended to hit her, or he might have aimed for someone else and they moved but JRM upped the ante by his actions.

Its a loose definition of a physical attack

"EltonJohnsSyrup has nailed it"

Well, apart from the little matter of me having already condemned the people involved in the jRM incident. But don't let the facts get in the way of a good story!

RaySwan · 03/02/2018 14:37

Momentum and antifa are the fascists they apparently hate. The irony seems lost on them.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 03/02/2018 14:37

LadyDeadpool, that still is grabbed at a clever point - it does indeed look like he's hitting her.

However, if you view the footage you can see that he's not - in the pushing & shoving his arm was pushed up at the elbow by someone beside him, and then she was pushed forward at the same time.
This resulted in his hand glancing her face - not an intentional punch or strike at all.

But you know that, I'm sure.

EltonJohnsSyrup has nailed it.

Except he or she or indeed they. Have not. Just a minor detail.

Justanotherlurker · 03/02/2018 14:40

The focus on whether they were Labour Party members or not is just an attempt to smear the left. 99.99% of Labour supporters are not out causing trouble at Tory events, and it’s disingenuous for PPs to suggest otherwise

I don't think anyone is smearing the whole left, this argument always comes out, but there is an issue with the current labour party that some in the top tier celebrate protesters kicking the shit out of political opponents and championing them as the best of our movement

It stirs the pot and esculates things

Battleax · 03/02/2018 14:46

Except he or she or indeed they. Have not. Just a minor detail.

That's not really a rebuttal, is it?

VladmirsPoutine · 03/02/2018 14:48

Oh yes, that being able to be found in the thread and discussion that currently goes back around 15 pages now. I must have missed that somehow.

Rebeccaslicker · 03/02/2018 14:50

Well don't let not having read the thread stop you from making strong statements about what people have/not said, eh??

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 03/02/2018 14:53

Makeourfuture- the 'protester' has been confirmed as Josh Connor now apparently - the Corbyn fan & momentum activist that was named last night.

Yesterday & this morning you have been awaiting confirmation of this as you were reticent to condemn until you knew for sure.

So now you know - do you want to take the opportunity to categorically state that you condemn the actions of this shouty twat & support JRM's right to speak without fear of politically motivated violence?

Justanotherlurker · 03/02/2018 14:54

Oh yes, that being able to be found in the thread and discussion that currently goes back around 15 pages now. I must have missed that somehow.

If that is in relation to the video i posted, I originally posted it and there was no response then, as I assume there will be no proper response now.

BluePony · 03/02/2018 14:55

Hitler 'stood up for what he believed in'. No-one thinks he's a great guy for that, so why is Mogg?Hmm

Eltonjohnssyrup · 03/02/2018 14:56

Hitler 'stood up for what he believed in'. No-one thinks he's a great guy for that, so why is Mogg?

RTFT for about eleventh billion responses.

Battleax · 03/02/2018 14:56

Because he's not actually a warmongering, genocidal fascist and therefore within the range of reasonable free speech, even if we strongly dislike his views?

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 03/02/2018 14:57

@BluePony missing the point spectacularly. Firstly for comparing Rees Mogg to Hitler and secondly for trying to shut down an MP because you don't agree with them.

I dont agree with him i wil however defend his right to say it without masked thugs trying to shut down debate.

VladmirsPoutine · 03/02/2018 14:58

@Justanotherlurker It wasn't in response to your video. Read the small exchange prior.

Rebeccaslicker · 03/02/2018 15:00

I just don't get the mentality.

"Look lads, right, this Tory scum thinks he can come and exercise his right to free speech in front of students who want to listen and debate with him. So what we'll do, right, we won't go and ask intelligent questions or anything to make him look like a fool. No, the way to handle this is to smash our way in and about "racist! Tory scum!" to disrupt any form of actual debate. And fuck those students who actually wanted to learn."

Useless tossers.

Rebeccaslicker · 03/02/2018 15:00

*shout not about

PinkertonSmythe · 03/02/2018 15:02

EltonJohnsSyrup has nailed it.

Bloody well said - well done EltonJohnsSyrup on bringing some sanity to a crazy world.

BackforGood · 03/02/2018 15:02

Of course the fact that MPs in the House of Commons spend their time boorishly shouting each other down, doens't set a great example to anyone. PMQT is an embarrassing pantomime. I totally condemn people just shouting over a speaker, but I do that in the House of Commons as well as at the University of the West of England.

BluePony · 03/02/2018 15:02

Piglet my point is, I don't see why people admire someone for 'standing up for what they believe in' even if what they believe in is being sexist, homophobic etc.* Just because they say what they think, people like them, but they seem to glance over what the person is SAYING. I quite like the way Mogg presents himself, actually, but I don't admire him for 'standing up for what he believes in', nor do I understand people liking anyone simply because they stand up for what they believe in.*

BluePony · 03/02/2018 15:03

Piglet I also think people should have freedom of speech- I never said that they shouldn't but refer to my other point- it's just admiring someone for 'standing up for what they believe in' that I don't understand Smile

Eltonjohnssyrup · 03/02/2018 15:03

However, if you view the footage you can see that he's not - in the pushing & shoving his arm was pushed up at the elbow by someone beside him, and then she was pushed forward at the same time.
This resulted in his hand glancing her face - not an intentional punch or strike at all.

That footage shows a completely different part of the melee. The arm in yours is black with a little white sleeve poking out. In the earlier footage the arm is entirely clothed in white and he is clearly pushing at her and puts his hand over her mouth.

But when did a Momentumist ever let the truth get in the way of a bit of propaganda eh?

grannytomine · 03/02/2018 15:04

it does indeed look like he's hitting her. I wonder if it felt like he was hitting her?

However, if you view the footage you can see that he's not - in the pushing & shoving his arm was pushed up at the elbow by someone beside him, and then she was pushed forward at the same time. This is the problem with JRM going into the audience, then they crowded round, there was pushing and shoving and someone got hit.

Battleax · 03/02/2018 15:05

It's getting much harder to have the courage of your convictions in this fucked up world @bluepony
