So I was round at a friend’s house for a catch up on our day off, and we were chatting in her kitchen diner while she carried on wiping sides down etc.
Her washing machine finished its cycle and she bent down and hauled out the contents of the load which was exclusively black/dark grey - jeans, leggings, tights, T-shirts etc; not a colour or pastel in sight.... EXCEPT ... entangled in all this was my DD’s school cookery apron that her DD had borrowed. It’s WHITE AND YELLOW.
I was standing there watching so she had perhaps forgotten that it was in there and couldn’t just stuff it back in so she styled it out “Oh this is yours, I’ll get it dry so you can take it with you.”
Now I know I am very picky when it comes to dividing colours for washing -- those “Chris Martin” coloured T-shirts with white sleeves are my worst nightmare laundry-wise - but... seriously??? Because it wasn’t just a random mixed wash Hmm it was definitely a very dark wash with my DD’s white apron stuffed in.
I’ve obviously got plenty worse things to worry about (oh I really have) but even though we met through school, I did consider her a close friend and she has voiced the same to me. I’ve tried to just forget about it but it keeps coming back to me! Was it really mean of her?
AIBU to take this personally..?

"No underpants and socks together" what???? I always do this! What am I doing wrong?

MyBrilliantDisguise · 29/01/2018 23:46

I never separate and never have a problem.

zukiecat · 30/01/2018 00:38

I never separate washing, unless it's something that will obviously run, like a pair of black jeans, or red items

What's a Chris Martin top?

LolaTheDarkdestroyer · 30/01/2018 01:02

That's slack, I have strict black washes, dark washes, light darks washes, light washes and white washes. She has crossed the fucking line.

ToftheB · 30/01/2018 01:15

Wow. I don’t really do separate washes, unless I’ve got something new and dark that I know will run. I know other people do a better job with their darks and lights, but I would never in a million years even consider that sloppy washing could be seen as a personal insult.

BertrandRussell · 30/01/2018 01:20

You’re taking this as a personal insult? Fuck me!

Me264 · 30/01/2018 06:15

Pasta why on earth can’t pants and socks go in together??

OP I separate my washing but have done this sort of thing all the time when I’ve chucked something dirty in the machine and forgotten about it and then shoved a different coloured load on top. You’re being a bit ridiculous to say it’s ruined and can’t be handed down to your daughter because the colours have dulled down, it’s a school apron FFS.

Witchend · 30/01/2018 07:20

I don't separate the clothes. If there's something I think might run or I know. Does run, I hand wash it separately. In 20 years I've had 2 washes where things ran.

Having got 2 DD who live in black leggings (and often darkish tops) and a DH whose preferred colour is navy blue I often have what looks like a dark wash (with a number of paler underwear).

She probably was just thinking of getting it back to you asap.

raindropsandsunshine · 30/01/2018 07:23

Had she used a colour catcher?

Purplelion · 30/01/2018 07:32

You’d be embarrassed to send your DD to school in the apron? An apron that will get covered in food anyway?
You’re being absolutely ridiculous

Oblomov18 · 30/01/2018 07:37
Hmm

I rarely separate colours. Definitely not lights and darks.
I sometimes do put on a hotter white wash, if I've got enough.
If not, it all goes in together.

None of it discolours or runs or anything.

So, I can't see what the problem is.

Thursdaydreaming · 30/01/2018 07:40

I never separate unless it's something that will obviously run.

The apron is a bit "dull" now so you can't possibly send it to school? God forbid a dull apron! How shameful. Confused

RickOShay · 30/01/2018 07:42

I just could not not separate my washing, unless it was life or death,
I could not put in a load of mixed colours, makes me feel peculiar thinking about itGrin

SimultaneousEquation · 30/01/2018 07:42

I don’t bother separating the washing except if it needs a different temperature. I’m a slattern: bite me.Hmm

papayasareyum · 30/01/2018 07:43

I never do separate washes. There’s absolutely no need to.

IHaveACuntingPlan · 30/01/2018 07:44

Why on earth would you be embarrassed to send the apron to school now? Would you really throw away a perfectly good apron just because it looks a but dull now? That's madness!
BTW I never separate colours. Our whites probably aren't pure, brilliant, dazzling white but I don't really care; I hate laundry and am not going to make the process even longer and more of a hassle than it already is!

speakout · 30/01/2018 07:45

Many people don't separate laundry.

I do, But each to their own.

I was according to colour, fabric type, degree of dirtiness. So different cycles, temperatures etc.

I assume most people separate dark and light clothes as there are lots of detergents in the supermarket for coloured / light clothes.

RickOShay · 30/01/2018 07:47

I am not proud about my laundry habits, I just can’t not do it. I wish I could.

RickOShay · 30/01/2018 07:48

whites aren’t even that dazzlingGrin

Chienrouge · 30/01/2018 07:52

But seriously, of all the things she could do to upset you, why would she think ‘mwah ha ha, I’m going to turn her daughters apron a slightly grubbier shade of white’. Can’t you see that’s a pretty insane train of thought?

speakout · 30/01/2018 07:53

Not separating discolours and damages.

School uniforms are white shirts and black trousers. If you washed them together then shirts would turn grey, and black trousers would fade.Different cycles, temperatures and detergents.
Some things need a long hot wash, I wash a lot on a cold 15 minute cycle.
DD has lots of delicate dance clothes, I wash a lot of sweaty gym gear.
White sheets get a long hot wash and hung outside.

I do 10 loads a week.

NutElla5x · 30/01/2018 07:54

I can't believe what I've just read.Surely this is a joke thread right?

k2p2k2tog · 30/01/2018 07:56

I’ve tried to just forget about it but it keeps coming back to me!

Jeezo. Overinvested in laundry. I've heard it all now.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 30/01/2018 07:57

If it was in a random wash - no problem. I'd think she was a bit of a slattern and needs to read MN housekeeping forum but that's about it.

The fact it was in with a dark wash - that would annoy me because she obviously does separate her washes. So I'd be annoyed that
a) she had done it
b) she didn't apologise

I'm still annoyed about a book I loaned to a friend when I was about 7 and she gave it back with cover torn.

Where I come from, you treat your possessions carefully.

Skittlesandbeer · 30/01/2018 08:00

Seriously, my friends the ‘colour catcher’ folk have chimed in and been ignored.

Serious question: why don’t more people on here use them? They suit lazy laundry folk, finicky folk, eco folk so why the general boycott? What am I missing?

Are they too expensive per load for most people or something? They’ve been around at least 10 years, it can’t be lack of awareness?

Why wouldn’t you want to save water, detergent, machine longevity, time & energy?

It’s a little white piece of blotting paper stuff you throw in with multi-coloured items, or a mixed wash of coloured/dark/whites that picks up any colour released into the water, and stops it getting transferred into other clothes?

What am I missing? Aaarrrrggghhh!
