Just that really.

I do (whilst having a cigarette!)

I have an Arc mini. Gave up on 1st jan and it has been a breeze so far. I love it. And I’ve saved so much money. I bought it from totallywicked and have bought liquid from them. I used to smoke Marlboro green so have been buying the red label ice menthol. Am planning to reduce nicotine content gradually with a view to getting down to 0 and hopefully kicking the vaping next new year. Slow and steady.

totallystumped · 29/01/2018 18:52

I did.

I'd been made redundant, packed the kids off to school one morning, bought a pack of 20 cigs, realised I'd finished the pack just before they came home!

Bought a Blu ecig the next day. Haven't bought cigarettes since, or blagged one off anyone else.

What also helped was setting up a spread sheet with what I would have spent on fags and what I was spending on the ecig, and calculating the difference in spend. That was a shock after a month or so.

PoptartPoptart · 29/01/2018 18:55

I used to love smoking, really really loved it.
I switched to vaping, mainly due to the huge cost of cigarettes, and I haven’t looked back, it was so easy.
Bear in mind that I had previously tried to give up using hypnosis (twice) Alan Carr, patches, gum etc. Nothing lasted and I was miserable.
I now vape and wouldn’t ever go back to cigarettes.
I actually tried to smoke a cigarette about a year after I started vaping (I was stressed at work and had left my vape stick at home by accident)
I had about three puffs and couldn’t smoke anymore. It seriously made me want to vomit, it tasted like I was licking a dirty ashtray! I couldn’t believe it because I had been a smoker for over 20 years and loved my cigarettes.
Go for it op, if I can do it you can.

Guardsman18 · 29/01/2018 18:59

I'm feeling so inspired here I can't tell you!

Am a bit confused as to which one to get although it sounds like from what you all say, it's a personal preference?

ICanStandtheHeat · 29/01/2018 19:06

I did very easily. No transition. Just did it: don't piss about with rubbish ecigs though. Go somewhere proper and get kitted out. I went to totally wicked. They probably saved my life

ICanStandtheHeat · 29/01/2018 19:06

HollyBay do you have any evidence to support your theory

ICanStandtheHeat · 29/01/2018 19:08

HollyBay with all due respect he probably does know jack shit about vaping and judging people like most do. Look at the actual scientific evidence

NotACleverName · 29/01/2018 19:12

I don't think HollyBay's coming back at this point.

OP, liquid-wise I've found that Cosmic Fog and Element are really good. My favourite at the moment is Just Jam raspberry donut flavour (because I'm a poncy sod who likes dessert flavours).

No points for you then! ;-)

I think the quality varies and some are more robust than others. Might be worth looking at the different reviews on Amazon. I definitely wouldn't get one of those cheap pen type ones you get from places like tescos though. They're not very good at all. You can't get much out of them and they don't last long.

Faintlinesquints · 29/01/2018 19:14

I did in November and I've saved over £600 so far.

I think the biggest thing is you have to really, really want to do it. Not just because you think you should.
Go in to a 'vape' shop and speak to the people working there, they'll give you advice let you try out different vapes/flavours and you can pick what's best.
I know a lot of them suggest getting tobacco flavours to start with and working up to the other flavours but I hated that so went straight onto the fruit.
I started on a 6mg nicotine which isn't too high actually but I wanted to eventually ween myself down, I've been on a number 3 for a week now.
I've got a simple vape, it was around £35 iirc and I spend £10 a week on my flavours (sometimes can last 10 days on a bottle) some vapes you can change the voltage and watts and that was too complicated/fiddly for me.
I've also found going to the back door to have a puff of my vape rather that constantly having it helped too.

There has also been a recent study to say vaping is far safer than smoking

here

Good luck!

Faintlinesquints · 29/01/2018 19:16

Forgot to say that every night, after I have managed to go without a cigarette all day I transfer £8 into my savings account - it's shocking how quickly it adds up!

If you get a sore throat/cough when you start, keep at it. Only lasts around 24hrs while you get used to it.

BlurryFace · 29/01/2018 19:16

I've got a vype e-tank at the moment, whichI used to quit rollies. It's not the most cost efficient or the biggest hit but I do like it. What I like about it is you just replace the entire mouthpiece when the coil goes rather than fiddling with disassembling it. If/when I replace it it will be with a similar model that shares that convenience.

SaucyJack · 29/01/2018 19:20

I have this one Guardsman.

It does give off quite a lot of vapour as it's a sub-ohm tank, but it's a very satisfying "smoke".

Plus, the Apex tank is a dream to refill. Infinitely easier and cleaner than the mini nautilus I used to have.

JustGettingStarted · 29/01/2018 19:33

I switched over 3 years ago.

It did take a bit of will power, but very quickly I found cigarettes disgusting.

There are three main types of vapes:

  1. "Cigalikes" which are small and relatively expensive as you have to buy their brand replacements. They're also far less satisfying.
  1. Regular vape with a battery and a refillable tank. They can vary in size. They're the most common kind and parts are usually interchangeable between brands. The liquid for these is most easily found in shops.
  1. Sub ohm. These are the giant things that make massive clouds of vapour. They're a bit more antisocial (because of the huge clouds) and the liquid is a bit more expensive. They're "sub ohm" because they run at a higher wattage and the heating element has a lower resistance to the current (measured in ohms. These are less than one ohm of resistance.) You have to use the right liquid for the higher heat and you go through the liquid much faster. The batteries have to be huge to last several hours.

I have tried sub ohm and it was a bit much. I use the second type I have described above - a standard battery big enough to last all day and a very popular tank called the mini nautilus.

PoptartPoptart · 29/01/2018 19:33

Echoing what others have said, go into a proper vape shop and get their advice. Try lots of different flavours and different devices. It’s personal preference at the end of the day.

Yes. You can even give up a 20 a day habit and not start vaping. :)

Guardsman18 · 29/01/2018 19:39

@Idontdowindows - are you holly in disguise?!

I was just digesting all the info and haven't smoked!

Sorry to ask/keep on, but what is a proper vape shop?

I went in one a few years ago and I was served by a young girl - who was very polite - but I had to know what I wanted/needed.

Hope that makes sense

I agree with this. I started with a 10 Motives fake cigarette thing that I bought from Sainsbury's for £5.99. It worked well enough for me to know that I could give up smoking via vaping...but I very quickly started researching for something better. It said on the packet that it was equivalent to 40 cigarettes, but there's no way that's true....more like 10. So, if I stuck with this I wouldn't actually be saving any money at all.

reddington · 29/01/2018 19:46

Personally I like smoking

The myth perpetuated by every smoker. I used to love smoking, really enjoyed it. Once I understood the myth and why I thought I enjoyed it, it became old really quickly. Having every single cliche I used as a smoker de-bunked I realised what an idiot I was for smoking. The last cigarette was a relief and a celebration, cured of a fucking horrible disease.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 29/01/2018 19:48

DH gave up smoking 30 to 40 a day last summer after he got pneumonia. He used Champix (couldn't get on with a vape) and said he found it quite easy. He had smoked for 50 years. Unfortunately it was too late and he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer a few weeks later and has been told it's terminal, but he is now the most vehement anti smoker I have ever met.

Pfftkids · 29/01/2018 19:48

I started with a Cirro vape pen from Tesco, you can buy the liquid to go with it there too, lots of great flavours. It's relatively cheap, easy to buy and use. I used them for 3 years.
