Just that really.

Taking one persons advice over multiple organisations with better experience and knowledge is pretty narrow minded.

FurryDogMother · 29/01/2018 15:09

NHS Choices page about the Public Health England report. That consultant is talking out of his arse.

Some people still need some willpower to switch from smoking to vaping, as there are loads of other addictive compounds in tobacco beyond nicotine. Some do it easily.

The Pockex is a good starter set and widely available.

I smoked for 28 years and have now been vaping for nearly 4 years. My dentist can no longer tell that I ever smoked, which is a good sign as smoking is very harmful to gums.

All the credible evidence suggests that vaping is safer than smoking, but it varies on how harmful vaping is alone. A lot of people both smoke and vape which can skew data. Micheal Mosley did an excellent documentary on it.

Popcorn lung has been well and truly debunked, there's more of the linked compounds in tobacco and I don't think any smokers have ever had popcorn lung. I certainly never heard of it in my 28 years smoking.

Guardsman18 · 29/01/2018 15:14

So many to choose from! I appreciate the comments though.

I have given up twice before (I know, I know!) and it's not something I'm willing to put myself through at the moment!

I know I could use NHS helpline thingy, but I'd rather you lovely MN's support tbh.

Ollivander84 · 29/01/2018 15:14

Yes you can. I quit a 30 a day habit overnight with a vape

MysteryLovesCompany · 29/01/2018 15:15

honeyroar it's great you gave up easily, but for some of us nothing worked and for me, ultimately, I loved smoking, just hated the nasty effects and consequences, so I don't care if people think vaping is not giving up because I know I am healthier as a result.

Brazenhussy0 · 29/01/2018 15:15

@FurryDogMother I don't think the consultant exists...

Drug addicts always justify their methodology for hits.

You sound utterly lovely HollyBay. Why kick down smokers who are trying to improve their health by quitting? Does it give you a nice, fuzzy, warm feeling of superiority or something?

Hope the OP got something helpful from this thread before it turned sour as threads about vaping always do

LittleLionMansMummy · 29/01/2018 15:15

HollyBays assuming your dh was treated on the NHS I think his consultant might do well to follow the advice of his employer. The NHS advice of vaping follows that of Public Health England, whose study and corresponding report are readily available to those who are interested in the facts rather than hearsay. Incidentally, Cancer Research has much the same thing to say about vaping as Public Health England does.

LittleLionMansMummy · 29/01/2018 15:16

Oh and absolutely op, go for it. It's the only thing that stopped dh from smoking.

Youshallnotpass · 29/01/2018 15:17

That would be 30 years of cardiac experience idiot

Well no shit, Sherlock. By all means, trust your one consultant over many, many organisations which have carried out various studies and research.

Also - I don't smoke or vape Hmm

Guardsman18 · 29/01/2018 15:18

@HollyBayTree - thanks, but I really do want to give up cigarettes. You could be right. Nobody is trying to justify anything, nobody is saying it's right.

I was just asking for advice on vapes

OP posts:
NotACleverName · 29/01/2018 15:18

Over to you lot. Drug addicts always justify their methodology for hits. I'll leave you to it.

You sound like a lovely person, Holly. Your husband’s consultant is most definitely chatting shite, soz.

MonaTheMoaner · 29/01/2018 15:19

Yes! You can do this and it’s marginally easier with a vape.

Second the advice to go to a vape shop and get set up with a decent tank and mod. Ones that run on two large batteries are far superior and last far longer in a day than rechargeable batteries that can’t be removed. You’ll not want to be without it when you first start.

Also premium liquids taste better by far and you don’t need as high nicotine content to get the same hit. 3mg or 6mg will be fine in a premium but in the cheaper liquids you may need an 18mg for instance.

Bluelady · 29/01/2018 15:25

It's not marginally easier to give up with vaping, it's shedloads easier. Please don't take any notice of this alleged top flight cardiologist whose opinion differs from every piece of research on the subject and who flies in the face of NHS England.

itsbetterthanabox · 29/01/2018 15:25

@HollyBayTree
Have you ever gone cold turkey on heroin?

Llanali · 29/01/2018 15:28

@hollybaytree *I think I'll take the leading consultant on heart disease in the UK at the premier cardiac teaching hospital advice over a few armchair googlers with selective sources, if that's all the same to you guys.
*

I’m not convinced. I work at the UKs largest tertiary specialist cardiothoracic centre, and so far, not come across any consultants who think vape is worse than cigarettes. Plenty who think vape arent great, and that nothing would be better, but none who think cigarettes were better than vaping.

ilovesooty · 29/01/2018 15:29

HollyBayTree has made a number of somewhat unpleasant and outspoken contributions over the past few days and is unlikely to reflect on the links supplied.

I hope the OP isn't discouraged and that she finds help and advice on here and at her local vape shop.

MavisPike · 29/01/2018 15:30

Can we please all leave HollyBayTree alone , she has obviously had a shock with her husband
I use the curve to vape GuardsMan but you'd probably be better going to a vaping shop to get their advice
They will tell you what strength to get too
Do it ! You won't look back

Guardsman18 · 29/01/2018 15:30

Hopefully holly's gone now! Back to me, me, me!

Tell me I can do this

OP posts:
Hemlock2013 · 29/01/2018 15:31

Yes I did. I have a ten motives pencil one though. I love it. It’s really discreet, easily replaceable if lost etc. Not for everyone though.

I smoke roll ups and found the smaller option best for me. Now I have menthol tips although I never smoked menthol rollies. X

Hemlock2013 · 29/01/2018 15:31

smoked

kaytee87 · 29/01/2018 15:32

I quit a 20 a day habit by using an electric cigarette for 2 weeks to help with the physical withdrawals then stopped that too. It was very hard but doable

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 29/01/2018 15:33

Clearly a consultant with 30+years of experience knows jack shit and should be getting all his medical advice from an armchair KIA. no but he should be reading the latest scientific research papers and taking some notice of public health england.
