Just to clear up a few points -

PPs saying if he can talk he's not doing it right, I have noticed that the chat does only usually occur when I'm in the more, ahem, active role. I guess I need to start making him work harder 

@Mellodrama he is saying the kind of things you mentioned, and if he says them to me at the beginning/during foreplay I do find it quite arousing. I think that it must just be for me I need to be able to switch my mind of completely as things progress and I find it really hard to do that if he's talking to me.
