To think RyanAir are taking things a bit too far now...

Haven't flown with them for years but spotted some cheap flights. I knew they had made lots of items as extras now but even so was shocked. I had no idea they had cut back so much.

We always fly with only hand luggage to fit within requirements, a soft case, not a trolley etc. They've made this impossible now as you can only take one very small bag (20cm X 20 cm X 15cm from memory) on board unless you pay extra, which means you can take 2 - one very small and one hand luggage. So I'm taking the very small and we've paid £12 for DH to take 2 bags.

We're not sitting together as we didn't pay extra for selectable seats, and we were allocated middle row seats 5 rows away from each other.

You now pay extra to have aisle, window, extra legroom or to sit in the first half dozen rows.
I've sucked it up as its a cheap break without the kids, but I won't be travelling as a family with them, it's just not worth paying extra to meet the same standards as other budget airlines.

They've only taken things too far if people stop using the service. If that happens, they'll make more changes.

BTW my understanding is you can take another piece of hand luggage with you into the departure lounge free, but it will be put in the hold when you get to the aircraft.

Supply and demand

Jammycustard · 27/01/2018 15:13

That’s why it’s cheap dear.

elfycat · 27/01/2018 15:15

I wonder who these women are singing about

Weedsnseeds1 · 27/01/2018 15:15

You can take a small case to the gate and have it put in the hold for free.
Their website is a pain in the neck to use with all the upselling, but I generally find their hire car prices are cheap when added to a flight. Given I can fly to Europe for £35 and a train ticket to London costs me £120, I still find them good value despite the annoyance of using them, if that makes sense?!

NewYearNewMe18 · 27/01/2018 15:16

Your memory fails you

Ryanair cabin baggage size:

Ryanair Cabin Baggage size: Strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm is permitted. (handbag, briefcase, laptop, shop purchases, camera etc.) must be carried in your 1 permitted piece of cabin baggage.

NewYearNewMe18 · 27/01/2018 15:18

55cm x 40cm x 20cm Those dimensions were enough for me to have a weeks clothes on holiday. But I travel light. I appreciate other take the kitchen sink

GreyGardens88 · 27/01/2018 15:19

what annoys me is families with kids not paying to have their seats allocated and then when they're on the flight try to get everyone around them to move so they can sit together Angry

It’s changed New Year, it’s now 35 x
20 x 20, if you aren’t paying any extra. That is just a fraction shorter than most small rucksacks, very annoying!

Moanaohnana · 27/01/2018 15:24

I agree and would never fly with them for this reason unless I was flying for business and taking only hand luggage. I think they're really immoral.

monkeywithacowface · 27/01/2018 15:25

I always used to offer up my hand luggage at the gate to go in the hold for free anyway so I'm not bothered by it. If piss taking passengers spent less time trying to shove over sized luggage into the over head cabin and holding up boarding it would have happened.

The worse thing about flying Ryanair is the behaviour of other passengers people turn into absolute pillocks at the airport.

BlindLemonAlley · 27/01/2018 15:30

Well I guess O’ Leary has to fund the pilot pay increases somehow Grin

VladmirsPoutine · 27/01/2018 15:34

That’s why it’s cheap dear.

Yes. Once you've factored in the cost of even being allowed to breath on the plane it is exceptionally cheap.

I do think they've gone too far. But nothing is really going to change - people need to get to places and if enough people stump up the cash for additional costs then there we go.

paxillin · 27/01/2018 15:35

They'll make you pay for the loo and to get a seat soon.

bridgetoc · 27/01/2018 15:38

YABU.......... I have to fly to Ireland at least six times a year, and even with all the add ons, they are still miles cheaper than anyone else. In truth, this is why they are popular.

If I don't like a company, I don't use them. I don't book with them, and then come on Mumsnet and start moaning. Get a grip OP........

franke · 27/01/2018 15:44

Major airlines now charge more if you want a larger checked bag, seat choice etc so no different to Ryanair imo. For short-haul I just think of Ryanair as like catching the bus. I'm flying to London in a couple of weeks with them for €25 return (from Germany) including my own choice of seat. You can take a pull along (which will be placed in the hold before you board) and a handbag for free. I've flown several times with them in the past year (following a long period of just not considering them because they seemed so obnoxious) and have been impressed. At the moment BA or Lufthansa don't offer me any added value for short haul.

incywincybitofa · 27/01/2018 15:46

So they charge you if you want to put luggage in the hold but if they take it off you at the gate they don't charge you?
That seems like a bit of a no brainer

NewYearNewMe18 · 27/01/2018 15:47

That's odd. I flew with them in Mid November and took a small suitcase on wheels as my hand luggage.

DarthArts · 27/01/2018 15:48

I really don't get the angst about Ryan Air tbh.

It's not like Micheal O'Leary has kept the company ethos and strategy quiet.

It's known for its crap service but cheap prices and many people are happy to put up with the former due to the latter.

I tried flying with them once and realised that there was a level of service I was happy to pay for and as a result have never used them again.

But each to their own.

Ultimately if you don't like the premise of what they offer, don't fly with them.

GetShitDone · 27/01/2018 15:49

Its not odd. The rules changed less than two weeks ago.

Trills · 27/01/2018 15:50

Makes sense to me.

If it upsets you, think of the chosen-seat with-bag price as the full price, and getting rid of these things as a discount.

(they can't advertise it that way round because they're not allowed to automatically tick the box for anything that is optional, that would be seen as conning people into having "extras" that they didn't want)

monkeywithacowface · 27/01/2018 15:50

Yup that's about the size of it incywincy. No idea why people are getting their knickers in a twist about it.

Loonoonow · 27/01/2018 15:53

I fly to and from Ireland every 6 weeks or so. Ryanair is very seldom the cheapest option even without all the optional extras. I generally find Aer Lingus to be better value or (depending on the route) Easy Jet. However if the other airlines are more expensive I will put up with Ryan Airs ridiculousness in order to save money. It's not as if we are forced to fly with them. As a PP said if their policies lost them revenue they would rescind them pretty quickly.
