To think RyanAir are taking things a bit too far now...

Haven't flown with them for years but spotted some cheap flights. I knew they had made lots of items as extras now but even so was shocked. I had no idea they had cut back so much.

We always fly with only hand luggage to fit within requirements, a soft case, not a trolley etc. They've made this impossible now as you can only take one very small bag (20cm X 20 cm X 15cm from memory) on board unless you pay extra, which means you can take 2 - one very small and one hand luggage. So I'm taking the very small and we've paid £12 for DH to take 2 bags.

We're not sitting together as we didn't pay extra for selectable seats, and we were allocated middle row seats 5 rows away from each other.

You now pay extra to have aisle, window, extra legroom or to sit in the first half dozen rows.
I've sucked it up as its a cheap break without the kids, but I won't be travelling as a family with them, it's just not worth paying extra to meet the same standards as other budget airlines.

I wouldn’t fly with them now as they would make me put even my most compact camera bag in the hold and with even that smallest bag holding over £15k of fragile equipment I wouldn’t take that risk. Luckily plenty of other airlines flying the same routes and I’m prepared to pay their higher prices.

If I was doing a very cheap weekend without taking anything valuable I wouldn’t mind at all.

diddl · 27/01/2018 16:48

"People really do take the piss so I don't blame them!"

But they were being allowed to take the piss, weren't they?

4yoniD · 27/01/2018 16:48

In the event of an emergency oxygen masks will release from the panel above your head. Insert a pound coin for a minute of oxygen...

you can pay about a fiver to bring it on as hand luggage.

Buttercupsandaisies · 27/01/2018 16:51

It's not hard. Each person still gets the free 10kg case, it just has to go in the hold once you get to the plane. I actually prefer that as I pay for a 20kg case anyway (in addition to free 10k case) so have to go the carousel anyway. It only really affects those who previously only took 10k and liked to avoid collecting it from the carousel.

Buttercupsandaisies · 27/01/2018 16:52

I use Ryanair as we book large group holidays (independently) and they're the only airline to not overbook seats. It's a must for me

SirGawain · 27/01/2018 17:03

You have every right to take your money elsewhere and fly with somone else.

Alittleconcerned1980 · 27/01/2018 17:04

They are deliberstely sitting people apart, which is wrong

They are not doing that.
Don’t be daft.

bruffin · 27/01/2018 17:09

Alitteconcerned
Im not being daft, you are being naive.
Booking a party of 12 in 12 different rows in the middle seat, is deliberately sitting apart. My ds gf had an empty seat next to her so why didnt they just put a party of 2 together rather than make them pay extra to move one of them, so they can sit together.

It's around six quid to be guaranteed to take your bag on board with you.

And it'll be safer on board now as well because there's not as many people squishing and squeezing bags into the overhead bins.

Elementally · 27/01/2018 17:10

What annoys me is that the pricing is not transparent. I can easily find out the headline cost of my ticket but the charges for extras keep changing and it requires going through the whole booking process to find out the actual cost. It makes it difficult to compare costs between airlines, which is what they want as we are them less likely to bother shopping around.

lalalalyra · 27/01/2018 17:11

The middle seat allocations is no mystery either - people are more likley to pay for a window or aisle seat so when they are allocating people who haven't paid more of them are going to be allocated the less popular middle seats.

That's just business sense surely?

SoupDragon · 27/01/2018 17:13

I think they tested it with several airlines on something like Watchdog and it did appear to be true.

It's entirely transparent, its just nobody bothers to actually look.

AnyFucker · 27/01/2018 17:17

Another thread whinging about Ryanair ?

Don't use them then. Simple. You will pay a lot more money though

I fly with them 3-4 times a year and have never had a problem

Alittleconcerned1980 · 27/01/2018 17:18

bruffin

Because the seat next to her woukdnhave been one that there was a charge attached to it. She was in a “freebie”

It’s not brain science. And it’s sure as hell not a conspiracy!

Alittleconcerned1980 · 27/01/2018 17:19

And if you are struggling with Ryanair pricing, then I truly sympathise. Every day life must be tough.

AnyFucker · 27/01/2018 17:21

Thete is no need to "struggle with pricing"

The Ryanair website adds it all up for you ! And it's still cheaper than everyone else !

diddl · 27/01/2018 17:23

"It's around six quid to be guaranteed to take your bag on board with you."

If it's so cheap, I wonder if it will make much difference then?

Elementally · 27/01/2018 17:23

It adds it all up but I have to go through the entire booking process to find out the cost. That's my issue. I cannot use an online price comparison tool and say, oh yes, Ryanair are the cheapest. The results are not accurate.

Elementally · 27/01/2018 17:24

I only fly with budget airlines and they're all annoying in their own unique ways.

lalalalyra · 27/01/2018 17:27

If it's so cheap, I wonder if it will make much difference then?

Only the 90 or so that are guaranteed to fit will be able to buy the priority boarding so the rest will have to put their bags in the hold.

anyone who pays for hold luggage already will likely stick theirs in as they'll be waitng on the carousel anyway (They already often ask when you are checking a bag in if you'd like your hand luggage in the hold so they'll probably do that more often - it saves humphing it around the airport). Plus all the folks who normally happily stick theirs in at the gate will still do so.

I think it'll make quite a difference. It'll make boarding and getting everyone settled much quicker as there will be less "but I need my case" and folks hunting for spaces.

AnyFucker · 27/01/2018 17:29

It's only a few clicks to find out the total price

polaricecaps · 27/01/2018 17:38

I've just booked a couple of tickets and happy to pay £5 for a cabin bag (which includes priority boarding if that means anything now) plus a couple of quid for a seat next to friend. Always got irritated with people taking the piss with cabin bags.

Just wondering if you choose not to book seats, do they get allocated at booking or at boarding?

Buttercupsandaisies · 27/01/2018 17:40

I'd book as they offer upto 3 free seats for kids under 15 with each paying adult - that's very cheap so most will pre book I think
