To think RyanAir are taking things a bit too far now...

Haven't flown with them for years but spotted some cheap flights. I knew they had made lots of items as extras now but even so was shocked. I had no idea they had cut back so much.

We always fly with only hand luggage to fit within requirements, a soft case, not a trolley etc. They've made this impossible now as you can only take one very small bag (20cm X 20 cm X 15cm from memory) on board unless you pay extra, which means you can take 2 - one very small and one hand luggage. So I'm taking the very small and we've paid £12 for DH to take 2 bags.

We're not sitting together as we didn't pay extra for selectable seats, and we were allocated middle row seats 5 rows away from each other.

You now pay extra to have aisle, window, extra legroom or to sit in the first half dozen rows.
I've sucked it up as its a cheap break without the kids, but I won't be travelling as a family with them, it's just not worth paying extra to meet the same standards as other budget airlines.

'Charging families extra to sit together is totally unacceptable imo'

I don't see why not. No one forces people to ride with them. It's a business model that strips back the price to each individual, to just the seat, and everything else is extra so that the individual who wants nothing but a seat on a flying bus can pay for just that.

Sorry, I know this is not really the subject, but has anyone ever had compensation for a cancelled Ryanair flight?
I was due to fly with them last September and my flight was cancelled 4 days before when they didn't have any pilots. I was refunded the cost but never received any compensation which I think I was entitled to. I filled in the claim fund on their website but never had any news. Did anyone else get compensation in that situation and is it too late to chase them now?

SoupDragon · 28/01/2018 15:47

I don't understand why people can't make do with the contents of only one bag for what surely is only a short flight. Why do you need two cases inside the cabin?

They can. They only need two because they want to avoid the wait at the baggage carousel after the flight.

BiteyShark · 28/01/2018 15:56

Lots of people only want the basic model so separating out the 'extras' saves them money. If you don't like them fly with someone else but I think you will find they will be dearer overall.

Personally I like all the extras and more so fly with more expensive airlines anyway.

Goldmonday · 28/01/2018 16:08

Vowed never to fly with Ryanair again. EasyJet are so much better.

The last Ryanair flight I was on a pregnant woman was denied a free glass of tap water....I mean come on ffs

lalalalyra · 28/01/2018 16:13

The government should step in and ban some of their extra charges

Surely that would only be remotely reasonable if they were forcing people to pay the charges?

Their upfront charges are what they say they are - a seat on a the plane.

If you want a specific seat, extra bags, bags in the cabin, food or drinks then you have to pay extra.

They are a basic airline. Yesterday I flew home with my free 10kg bag in the hold, my handbag at my feet, in a randomly allocated seat for £16.99. If you want all the extras you either pay for them on their website or you fly a different airline.

taskmaster · 29/01/2018 10:42

I see the "don't like them, don't use them then" brigade are at it again. Why does this comment piss me off so much? Erm, because some of us have NO choice because it is the only airline that flies to our home city or the destination we want to go to. When I want to visit the city I'm from, I fly Ryanair or I don't go. Do people not realise this?

Then you should be grateful to Ryanair instead of bitching about their low costs.
And its still a choice.

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/01/2018 11:26

LadyK

You have 6 years to reclaim compensation and if it's the airline's fault, which no pilots sounds like it is, you are entitled. There are template letters on the moneysavingexpert site, so follow the advice there.

I'm in favour of the latest changes because some people really do take the piss with hand luggage. And the reality is that if everyone has a trolley case, there simply isn't enough room for them all to go in the cabin, so they have to limit it somehow. Presumably they will only sell so many 'guaranteed big bag in the cabin' slots and after that, you will have to put it in the hold?

Agree that Ryanair can be very cheap. I flew to the Canaries just over a year ago for £30 return, hand luggage only (wheelie case and small hand bag plenty room for a week's holiday in hot weather) which is a stonking bargain, especially when someone on here commented that the taxes would have been £26 so it was effectly £2 each way for the ticket - the bus ride to the next town 2 miles away costs more than that.

The main reason why I would ban some of the extra charges is especially because Ryanair seem to change rules on what is charged for after people have made bookings. I also think that the advertised price should for anything include certain basics, so that if you do not want them you get a discount. If I travel off-peak on a train, I get a reduced price, for example.

I would also ban all the extras charged for concerts and theatres for 'web sales fees' or 'processing fees' as well. It is about ending rip-off dishonesty for which I feel Ryanair are the worst of a large bunch.

SaltySeaBird · 29/01/2018 19:05

It's around six quid to be guaranteed to take your bag on board with you.

I didn’t know that thanks! In that case it’s a small price to pay and I’d happily do so. I guess having some pay the extras supplements the very cheap no frills tickets. I actually think that is fairer than everyone paying the same regardless.

They are not allowed to do it that way.

They can't have extras pre-checked and ask you to uncheck the box if you don't want it, because then people who forgot to uncheck the box (or didn't notice the box) would be charged for something they didn't want.

They used to try shit like that with travel insurance and make you select "No travel insurance" from a list of country names, and they got told off.

Trinity66 · 29/01/2018 20:54

its the sitting people travelling together all over the plane thats annoyed me, tbh now I book with other airlines if the price difference isn't huge and tbh aerlingus are normally pretty good as well price wise and so much better to fly with

Ontheboardwalk · 29/01/2018 21:24

Honestly I’d like airlines to put everything bigger than true hand luggage in the hold. People have been taking the piss for years taking more and more luggage onto the plane.

Pictures like this really annoy me. People have obviously come down the inflatable slide and they’ve got shit loads of luggage in their hands. Don’t be in front of me in an emergency situation taking more than the essentials with you.

To think RyanAir are taking things a bit too far now...
AnotherPlaceAnotherTime · 29/01/2018 21:31

I would seriously just climb over any person who, in an emergency evacuation, attempted to get their luggage.

Anyone who is seen doing that should be jailed imo.

Ontheboardwalk · 29/01/2018 21:34

Another I agree with you. If they can’t limit the baggage they should lock the bins until landing in my opinion

BubblesBuddy · 29/01/2018 22:53

I find it amazing that people are happy to be treated like this and continue to support a company that is haemorrhaging pilots. I am very lucky in that I don’t want, or need, to go where they fly because I don’t have a holiday home which involves using a Ryanair served airport. Can’t stand Easy Jet either after they threatened to leave my DD behind unless she coughed up £40 for a cabin bag to be put in the hold that was a tiny bit too big. She weighs about 7 stone and giant obese people had already carried on their kitchen sinks. It’s more like taking cattle to the slaughterhouse raher than a civilised airline.

BubblesBuddy · 29/01/2018 22:55

When I say too big - the bag was the right size but a side pocket was overstuffed!
