To think RyanAir are taking things a bit too far now...

Haven't flown with them for years but spotted some cheap flights. I knew they had made lots of items as extras now but even so was shocked. I had no idea they had cut back so much.

We always fly with only hand luggage to fit within requirements, a soft case, not a trolley etc. They've made this impossible now as you can only take one very small bag (20cm X 20 cm X 15cm from memory) on board unless you pay extra, which means you can take 2 - one very small and one hand luggage. So I'm taking the very small and we've paid £12 for DH to take 2 bags.

We're not sitting together as we didn't pay extra for selectable seats, and we were allocated middle row seats 5 rows away from each other.

You now pay extra to have aisle, window, extra legroom or to sit in the first half dozen rows.
I've sucked it up as its a cheap break without the kids, but I won't be travelling as a family with them, it's just not worth paying extra to meet the same standards as other budget airlines.

You wanted cheap. If you have a problem with their new policy, then don't use them.

' I think they're really immoral.'

But you still use them when it suits your purpose Hmm

taskmaster · 27/01/2018 15:57

I never understand why people whine so much about ryanair. The policies are clear and easy to follow, they are the same as many other companies, in fact they are less restrictive than many. Even after you add on the extras (if you choose, you don't have to purchase any of them) its still cheaper by far than almost anyone else.

If you don't like it, buy a more expensive flight. But quit using ryanair while whining about it.

Parker231 · 27/01/2018 15:59

They will continue o be successful as they are giving customers what they want - a low cost flight. If you want extras you will have to pay extra but at least you’re not paying for services you don’t want.

MuseumOfCurry · 27/01/2018 16:00

I think you need to either make your peace with RA or spend more on your flights.

If I can only afford RA, I can't afford to go on holiday. It's not worth the aggro. Priorities.

HotelEuphoria · 27/01/2018 16:03

That's odd. I flew with them in Mid November and took a small suitcase on wheels as my hand luggage.

It changed, last week.

The poster that said you can still take a small trolley bag but they put it in the hold at boarding is correct.

We fly with Ryan Air on Friday and I was emailed all the new rules.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 27/01/2018 16:08

I live in Italy and can remember when coming home cost me 24 hours, a months' wages and a stop in Milan or Rome, then one in Amsterdam or Brussels then on to London. I've now got a flight which gets me there direct, and for which 3 weeks ago I paid £140 return, including hold bags and choice of seats for 2 people.

I sometimes fly BA, Alitalia or Lufthansa as well, all 3 of which do the same pricing tiers as Ryanair (no luggage/hold luggage/business) Sometimes they work out cheaper. The airline which is never cheaper is Easyjet. With whom I've ecperienced the worst customer service (on the ground) ever.

I'm no huge fan of Ryanair, but 3 weeks ago, £130 got 2 people to London and back, with hold luggage.

The pisstaking by Ryanair passengers over the handluggage thing has always been terrible. Massive cases they can't even lift into the lockers, blocking rows of seats by putting wifey by the window and hubby next to the aisle etc etc.

I noticed the latest thing is for passengers to kick off if their carry on case can't be put in the overhead bin directly above them It's "their" space dontcha know. Except the other 5 people using that bin have already filled it to bursting witj their stuff.

diddl · 27/01/2018 16:12

Haha! So it's put into the hold "free of charge"-after you've paid to have it put there??

I'm not surprised tbh, stuff rarely seemed to fit in the overhead lockers.

I used to take a rucksack that was the allowed limit but squishable. I'm sure some people take took the piss with their suitcases.

It's annoying as the reason I wanted carryon was so as not to have to wait to at baggage claim due to catching a train, plus not wanting to lug a big suitcase on trains.

taskmaster · 27/01/2018 16:14

No. Its free of charge, you haven't paid to put it there. The clue is in the "free of charge" bit.

Olga81 · 27/01/2018 16:19

The choices with Ryanair now are

  • take small piece of hand luggage that will go on flight with you (free of charge)
  • take hand luggage sized trolley with weight limit of 10kg that you will wheel to gate but it will be put in hold and have to be collected at the carousel (free of charge)
  • pay small charge to guarantee you can take a hand luggage sized trolley with weight limit of 10kg into the aircraft with you
  • pay for large piece of luggage to go in hold
Friedgreen · 27/01/2018 16:20

The new policy is perfect for Rynair’s bread and butter crowd - business people. Most of their policies are designed to cater to them better.

diddl · 27/01/2018 16:20

Yes, just looked again & I misread it. You used to have to pay to put the bag in the hold if it was bigger than 55x40x20, didn't you?

So now no luggage bigger than 55x40x20 at all & if you want it on board you pay?

That might actually make things better in terms of being stuck in the aisle whilst people put luggage up.

GrimDamnFanjo · 27/01/2018 16:22

Hey I'm not that bothered as its just us two and we have paid the extra for a bag in the locker. For the price we can suck it up, but it does make RyanAir less of a bargain than you think when you see the prices without the extras.

No. You can still have large hold luggage, which you pay for. If you want your large hand luggage with you, you pay for priority boarding. Or you can pay nothing and just have your handbag on board.

Olga81 · 27/01/2018 16:26

If you want a bargain why pay to put a bag in the locker? If it's not stuff you need to access on the flight and you're not in a desperate rush to get out the airport, you could have not paid, taken the same amount of luggage and it would just have been put in the hold when you got on the plane. Nine times out of ten when we fly with Ryanair the luggage is waiting for us by the time we get to the carousel anyway so it doesn't even cost any time.

taskmaster · 27/01/2018 16:26

wasn' it like a fiver each? Hardly making it any less of a bargain.

WellThatsATurnipForTheBooks · 27/01/2018 16:26

You could look on the bright side - some airlines "hand luggage" has the same dimensions and you're not allowed to have an extra handbag (ie. a small handbag that would have your tickets, phone, purse, glasses etc) , it has to be able to go inside the hand luggage.

At least with Ryanair you get to have a seperate handbag on top of the hand luggage allowance.

TBH when we've flown with them as a family we've voluntarily handed over the hand luggage to go in the hold as it's so much easier than trailing around airport corridors, getting on and off runway buses and embarking with 2 adults , 2 children and 4 pull-along cabin bags

MadeinBelfast · 27/01/2018 16:27

I think their prices aren't bad, even after some of the extras, their policies are reasonably clear and they fly to a decent range of places. I remember when it cost about £100 to get to London from NI and then you'd have to pay for another flight to where you really wanted to go!
However, their customer service is awful. No info when things go wrong, a website that regularly stops working (have been trying to pay for an added extra for 3 days without success) and their 'live chat' is fairly unhelpful. That's what makes travelling with them frustrating and then you don't feel like you're getting value for money.

bruffin · 27/01/2018 16:28

They are deliberstely sitting people apart, which is wrong. On watchdog a party of 12 were all sat in single seats down the centre.
In december ds and gf were put in seperate seats even though there were empty seats next to each other.

diddl · 27/01/2018 16:31

" If you want your large hand luggage with you, you pay for priority boarding"

Is that not the 55x40x20 that I mention then?

taskmaster · 27/01/2018 16:36

you said no luggage larger than that allowed at all. Which was wrong.
You don't seem to be following.

Large cases you pay to go in the hold.
Small hand luggage cases you can pay to bring on with priority boarding, or they can go in the hold for free.
Handbag/baby bag etc: free to bring on.

It's not that hard.

allmycats · 27/01/2018 16:36

They now allow the same size large bag that you used to carry into the body of the plane FREE as before BUT they will take it from you and put it in the hold. This is FREE. If you want to take extra baggage then you pay for it. You can take a small (handbag) sized bag into the cabin.
What is difficult to understand about this ??
This has been caused by the CF's who were taking bloody large bags on board and trying to stuff them into the overhead lockers, along with their coats, hats etc leaving very little room and people who were playing by the rules had no where to put their bags.
You pay your money and take your choice but you can't keep taking the piss !!

Orangecake123 · 27/01/2018 16:40

The last time I flew with RyanAir just before the changes on the 31st of december the two girls in front of me didn't just bring one trolley bag but two trolley bags and a rucksack each! They weren't stopped either. People really do take the piss so I don't blame them!

diddl · 27/01/2018 16:44

"Large cases you pay to go in the hold. "

Ok, thanks.

I hadn't seen that anywhere which was why I was getting confused, I'd only seen mention of the 55x40x20 which you used to be able to carry on.

lalalalyra · 27/01/2018 16:45

I don't really get all the angst over this.

You can take a case/bag/whatever plus a handbag/small bag for free.

Previous the first 90 people were allowed to take their case/bag/whatever into the cabin. The rest were always taken at the plane steps and put in the hold because there's simply not enough space. Only the people who paid for priority boarding were ever guaranteed to get their bags onboad.

Now they've simplified it. Pay and your bag goes on. Don't pay and it goes in the hold.

No more hanging around while people wander up and down the plane trying to find a space to squeeze their case into the overhead bins. No more crew asking at the gate who wants their case in and who wants to keep it. No more rushing to be in the first however many for the folks who desperately must have their suitcase with them.

Tinkerbec · 27/01/2018 16:47

Even paying for seats and hold luggage I still find them cheap enough to use. Flights are quick so it’s worth it. Can put up with it for an hour or two. So I don’t think the service (air) is that bad.
