AIBU Trollhunting is ruining AIBU

Trueheart1 · 26/01/2018 22:47

I understand troll hunting if the OP is giving dangerous advice. However, increasingly every single poster is being grilled by troll hunters about every aspect of their post. It makes a thread hard to follow and really boring to read.

I don't understand why the troll hunters do it, there is an easy to use report button. I have read several threads in the last week where the OP was subjected to constant snide comments about the veracity of their post. I think if these troll hunters persist then people won't want to post at all.

I guess Mumsnet are not answerable to mere users of this free site

There is no such thing as free.

If you don't pay a subscription then you are the product. You may be entirely happy with that but its payment in another form.

No single poster is going to be particularly missed. But there are many who have been on here for many years and make MN more than just a random chat site that will be dropped tomorrow.

Some of these have areas of expertise (primary school, SEN, fixing a leak, difficult parents..), some are brilliant in a generally supportive role and some are just jolly good fun.

Any of them missing, fine. But many of them missing and MN does just become another random chat place. Witness the reduction in silly just for fun threads. If chat threads all become bunfights or cheekyfucky fuming, the MN feel goes missing.

Coconutspongexo · 29/01/2018 21:33

Yes I’ve asked.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/01/2018 22:00

It's said that nature abhors a vacuum. I think that's true of anything really. There are plenty of posters who have left the site who may be missed by other individual posters, but the site itself doesn't miss them. Whatever it was they brought to the site is no longer here but it doesn't grind to a halt. I don't think there's an MN 'feel' personally, whatever 'it' is comes and it goes from time to time but it's taken up by other people who bring new things - some good, some bad - like all of us.

Posters on specialist boards are unlikely to find themselves banned or harried by other posters because the main traffic is in AIBU, Chat and Relationships. Posters there are very replaceable because of the sheer volume and - with respect - lack of specific knowledge required of the general discussions.

I like Mumsnet but I take months off at a time and when I get back it's not markedly different. The CF thing is new (and for me, unwelcome) but it's a fad and it will stop eventually I expect. Everything else is Plus ca change...

RedDogsBeg · 29/01/2018 23:52

The sooner the CF genre dies out the better it's growing ever more ridiculous and extreme by the day - it surely has to implode soon.

paxillin · 30/01/2018 02:05

It's said that nature abhors a vacuum.

Not sure how that is relevant. I do think some posters (not individuals) are missed, have you seen some of the recent advice seekers? "I am in a difficult position" lots of answers: "I am much more fortunate". Well, bully for them. A few of the posters who could turn such an unfortunate thread back to a supportive one with gentle humour are missing.

I abhor the vacuum at work

Its one of the henry ones

I'm not actually working at the minute - was just reading this thread while necking a coffee and trying to get the kids off to school, but this did make me chuckle. Smile

DawnMumsnet · 30/01/2018 08:17

Also, just wanted to say (quietly, and with my civilian hat on) that some posters are very much missed.

But yes, the site goes on; and with a bit of good will there should be room for us all to shuffle along together.

paxillin · 30/01/2018 09:03

Perhaps we could canvas opinion again on a no-name-change topic. @DawnMumsnet. As @Sparklingbrook mentioned earlier, we had this discussion two years ago, but I think it would be good.

Blimey, paxillin, that thread is a blast from the past. So many familiar names. Rufus was posting on it before going renegade...

Will have a proper read of the thread now (it's 882 posts long so I may be some time). But it looks like there was a lot of support for such a topic and I shall raise it with the rest of the team.

Interesting quote from RebeccaMNHQ on that old thread

Yes, we do now have the ability to prevent folks from NCing if we find that they are abusing the system and we will use it. That obviously means we will rely on you to report folks for doing that and we can take a look and stop them from NCing again if needs be.

I don't remembert that.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 30/01/2018 09:42

2 years agio When rufus was a calf (really disappointed...turns out a baby reindeer is a calf not a fawn Sad

Its at times like this i realise how much time (ive wasted) spent on here

It would be this or a book to be fair so i still wouldn't spot my children in a line up

Sparklingbrook · 30/01/2018 09:46

I used to be on here a lot. There used to be that BoardReader site and I would regularly be at the top of the list years ago, unsurprisingly.

I am not on here anywhere like as much any more. RL takes a lot of time up these days.

Be interesting to see the stats now but I don't think they exist any more. Chances are we wouldn't recognise a single name in the top ten.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 30/01/2018 09:47

I do not want to look at the stats!!!!

I keep trying to wean myself off

Epic fail!!! (Fails)

Sparklingbrook · 30/01/2018 09:51

I have hidden loads of topics (I have ten unhidden ones) so my Active list is much reduced, and I regularly go down it hiding threads without opening them (especially if 'CF' is in the title.) So in theory I should be left with stuff that may be of interest. Grin

I his AIBU for a few months. That was good.

Sparklingbrook · 30/01/2018 09:51

*hid

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 30/01/2018 09:57

I pretty much only look at feminism chat, AIBU, chat and active

Thats what i need to do...cut down subject by subject

Having said that ive no idea what i woud do instead Grin

DH Might make me work or clean or something!!!!! Shock

Nope...I'll stick with mumsnet

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/01/2018 09:59

That's what I said. Individuals miss posters, the site doesn't. There are plenty of posters no longer on the site that I miss very much. That's the point, they're not here and to me, they've not been 'replaced'. It doesn't mean that the same posters are missed by everybody.

Sparklingbrook · 30/01/2018 10:01

I have Feminism well hidden. Grin

I use MN for the fairly unimportant discussions generally. Doesn't mean I don't care about 'issues' I just have zero interest in debating them on the internet with people with strange agendas.

I think we should have a MN Lite. Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 30/01/2018 10:05

Oh if youve seen any of my posts youll know i don't usually debate

I normally pop on with an inane pointless comment...i just want to join in Grin

And i lurk...a lot

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 30/01/2018 11:07

I'm sat here quite patiently waiting for someone to say they are not inane pointless comments

Its been a while and i need a wee...
