To ask what random things your DC have decided they’re scared of

My 8 month old DS has today decided he’s terrified when I yawn- he’s been fine with it for the last 8 months but now it’s terrfiying to him! Now every time I yawn he whips around to look accusingly at me and I have to pretend I’m doing something else.

Anyone else have any other DC that are afraid of something new/random?

3birds - my DD (22 months) is also scared of the very important lady, especially when she falls apart !

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 24/01/2018 12:38

DT2 (17 months) is scared of... the moon. 😂 She’s out of luck there. She saw it peeking through the window once and was almost inconsolable. If anyone mentions the moon (which we do a lot with small kids in the house) she shakes her head, toddles over to me and rests her head silently against me, breaking out in a cold sweat. Poor lovely thing.

DS is now 4 and currently scared of the holes in the baby gates (“I don’t like the face of it”), slippery when wet road signs, load limit signs, names of some streets (we can’t ever drive past these things and have to take various detours to get home) and the letter Z. But only at night. He has the aphabet on his wall next to his bed of course. Every night we cover the Z and every morning he uncovers it because “it’s not scary in the day”. Oh and he’s scared of just about all drama in tv shows. We have to watch Thomas with no sound. He keeps asking me what’s happening...Hmm

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 24/01/2018 12:39

Oh and Santa too. We had to take a letter to give to one of the elves at a Santa photo op. The letter was asking Santa politely to please leave the presents on the balcony and not come in our house. Can’t blame him really. It’s all a bit odd.

My dn is petrified of churches to the point she has to close her eyes when she walks past one. Very random.

WeeCheekyBird · 24/01/2018 14:38

My 7 month old is terrified of the aeroplane spoon noise "neeeee-owww". Big petted lip and fat tears. I feel awful about finding it really funny (I don't do it though as that would be mean)

Queeniebed · 24/01/2018 14:58

The Burgens? on Trolls - he was fine fr multiple viewings and then suddenly he started to edge away from the tv - hilarious to watch

Cineraria · 24/01/2018 15:19

DB went through a nervy phase. He was particularly scared of jokes. He overheard someone teasing me about a monster in the garden and, seeing how upset he got about it, told him not to worry as it was only a joke. He howled even more and told us he didn't want the joke to get him! Even now we occasionally tell him to watch out as there is a joke outside.

I only got scared of jokes after meeting DH; he has some horrors!

ColinsVeryJolly · 24/01/2018 15:40

When 12yo DS was little he was terrified of the baby in the sun on Tellytubbies. He loved the rest of the show but would scream blue murder when the baby/sun came on.

OliviaTheFox · 24/01/2018 19:30

Fluff. Terrified, screams if it’s in the bath with her.
And spiders web. Won’t go on a climbing frame if these a hint of a web.

thesockgap · 24/01/2018 19:38

Many, many years ago, when my son was aged between about 2-4 years old, he developed some very strange random fears.
Among them:

  • The character bear at our local chain pub (anyone remember Brewster Bear at the Brewer's Fayre pubs, used to make an appearance at kids' parties?! Yeah, him.)
  • Jack and the beanstalk, or even any mention of it!
  • Doorstoppers (the rubber kind that is fitted to the wall behind a door. Terrified of them.)
  • A remote control toy plane on wheels that my mum bought him for Christmas, we had to hide it on top of the wardrobe but once he knew it was there he wouldn't even go in the bedroom.
  • An inflatable toy chair.

I was about to comment on what a wuss he was, but then I remembered when I was little I was irrationally terrified of the kids' TV show Pipkins. Literally had nightmares about it. So I'm a fine one to talk!

Heatherjayne1972 · 24/01/2018 20:10

I knew a child who was terrified of Grass. Screamed blue murder when we went outside

DontWannaThanks · 24/01/2018 20:33

My 7 month old has suddenly decided she's traumatised by the baby rainmaker we have.

She's happily played with it for months but started screaming blue murder at it randomly few days ago. She still anxiously eyeballs the kitchen table where it was last seen Hmm

DontWannaThanks · 24/01/2018 20:36

@thesockgap your son wasn't alone with brewster bear!

We were all at a brewers fayre years back and heard children screaming far away in the restaurant, then several other children closer than the past started screaming and we were Confused

Then finally the bear emerged and set off half of our area Grin can see why they got rid

HateIsNotGood · 24/01/2018 20:54

Wrapping a towel round my wet hair - not just me he screamed at his auntie too for the same thing. 15 years later I have just realized that I don't wrap a towel round my head anymore when I spent the previous 40 or so doing just that.

And sand - but that's ok now.

manandbeast · 24/01/2018 21:13

Me when I’ve wrapped up my hair in a towel after a shower!!

manandbeast · 24/01/2018 21:13

X post with Hatels!!

bananafish · 24/01/2018 21:16

When oldest ds was 2 - he was terrified of grass. Grass. Summer was particularly fun that year. He'd just stand on a path bawling. Exasperated doesn't begin to cover it.

sonithewoni · 24/01/2018 21:19

Haircuts. DS was Ok ish for a while (he's 6) but last night we had it cut together at my hairdressers (he sort of laughed along and put up with it last time) and you would have thought they were pouring acid in his ears. Complete meltdown, which he's never had. He has to have it done and it's dreadfully stressful for everyone!

And they were fabulous with him btw talking sweeties, bogies, farting....the normal 6 year old things.

MoHunter · 24/01/2018 21:22

DS1 went through a phase where he was scared of fluff. Like bits of fluff on the carpet, or when he had a bath and some sock fluff came away from between his toes and was floating in the water - utter panic! Hmm Luckily he’s outgrown it!!

ChevalierTialys · 24/01/2018 21:50

DS is nearly 3, he is terrified of any vaguely person-shaped shadows, and reflections in windows. He also has quite an aversion to loud noises.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 24/01/2018 21:52

My daughter doesn’t like bears (or any animals) that move and sing (Christmas reindeers, bears etc). Other than that she’s pretty laid back which is surprising as I’m scared of a lot.

My friends daughter is literally scared of her shadow bless her

ChevalierTialys · 24/01/2018 21:58

@iklboo I was terrified of Fraggles when I was little! The Fraggle Rock song still makes the hairs on my neck stand up. My older sisters occasionally sing it just to get a reaction from me.
